As most of you know, we're big fans of the drive-in here at Film Junk, and during the summer we usually see a lot of movies there. We're fortunate enough to have a drive-in fairly close by where we live, but I know some people aren't as lucky, and many haven't even been to one before. So when we went to the drive-in a couple of months ago for a four-movie marathon, I decided to bring along a camera to document the occasion.

Now before anyone says anything, I should point out that unfortunately I did not capture the ritualistic eating of poutine on camera. I know, it's inexcusable. I'll get it next year. Also, another quick disclaimer: don't expect the quality of this video to be as good as any of the stuff Jay has shot and edited for Film Junk previously. I shot it on a Flip and edited it with Windows Movie Maker, so it's pretty rough around the edges. Deal with it!

It's been a long time coming, but you guys are in for a real treat. Last weekend myself, Sean and our good friend Roman paid Reed Farrington a visit to the Shatcave (a.k.a. Reed's House). We brought some gear and decided to lay down a very special VIDEO edition of Cantankerous, giving you all what you so badly need: a tour of Reed's House. What ensued was an intimate look into the soul of a man whose on-camera downward spiral into the realm of insanity left us questioning both his motives and our own universal relevance. Initially, Reed came across as an endearing and gracious host, but gradually his charms receded, letting his dark side seep through. Hoarding stuffed creatures for his own amusement. Single-handedly destroying entire colonies of lower life forms, simply to prolong the existence of his precious First Contact chocolate bars. A self-admitted psychopath and megalomaniac, 'Reed's House' provides a candid and disturbing portrait of one of the 20th century's most notorious (action) figures. Enjoy!

Hey guys, here's the final video podcast that Jay and I recorded from Sundance. I couldn't post it right away because it was too long for YouTube, so I decided to re-edit it and add in a little bit of b-roll footage as well. It would have been up sooner except YouTube also objected to my use of copyrighted music, which seems like a joke considering all the other videos I've seen out there using unlicensed tunes. Whatever. I suppose the Spin Doctors have to get paid somehow.

Jay and I both liked it, but we recorded a short video review discussing it in a little more detail. More to come later today... stay tuned! (Note: The video still has to process for a few minutes, will be playable momentarily.)

Unfortunately we're only going to be here for a short time, but we're determined to get the most out of it. Regular posts will probably be sporadic for the next few days, but look out for some reviews and video podcasts coming your way real soon. To get things started, here's a video of me on the drive in to Park City talking briefly about some of the movies we're looking forward to at the festival.

The ability to sum up a story in 3 minutes or so without giving away too much of the film while still building interest in the audience is a very fine art form. Maybe this is why so many trailers suck shit. Seeing as Colore Non Vedenti is a short film that will only see an internet/possible minor film festival release, there was no real point in doing a trailer. The main reason was to have something to put up here on Film Junk and over at the production blog for those of you interested in the film. So here it is! Hopefully it sums up the story in 3 minutes or so without giving away too much of the film while still building interest in the audience!!

As usual, we didn't get to see the new Star Trek trailer with Quantum of Solace here in Canada, but thanks to all the people who sent in links, we were able to check out the bootleg version of the trailer that has been floating around online. It's certainly decent enough quality, although the true HD Vimeo version [1] seems to be dead already. I decided to record Reed Farrington's reaction as he watched the trailer for the first time, I have embedded that video along with the leaked trailer itself below. I'll post a better quality version when it goes online Monday. What do you guys think of it?

Update: Further thoughts about the trailer from Reed Farrington in Treknobabble #41 [2].

As usual, we didn't get to see the new Star Trek trailer with Quantum of Solace here in Canada, but thanks to all the people who sent in links, we were able to check out the bootleg version of the trailer that has been floating around online. It's certainly decent enough quality, although the true HD Vimeo version seems to be dead already. I decided to record Reed Farrington's reaction as he watched the trailer for the first time, I have embedded that video along with the leaked trailer itself below. I'll post a better quality version when it goes online Monday. What do you guys think of it?

So we had a pretty big shoot last weekend and managed to get four scenes finished over two days. That means about 70% of our short horror film, Colore Non Vedenti, is now complete! I've posted a bunch of pictures over at the production blog, but I thought I'd share the third production diary here on Film Junk. We filmed in a really cool diner here in town, and not only did the scene turn out great, but the whole night was a lot of fun. Check it out below!

This post was taken from the Colore Non Vedenti Production Blog [1].

Sunday night we shot our first semi action scene. The set up is as follows: Our hero, Jack, is attacked by a waitress outside of a diner. She's under some sort of mind control and ends up struggling with him in the cab of his work van. Eventually, she barfs on him. Plain and simple.

There were a few challenges with this one...mainly the fact that we were shooting all of the close up shots of interior action in Roman's drive way. The exterior van shots will be done on location at a local truck stop. (On top of that, the interior of the diner which the waitress works in will be a completely different location as well.) I just wanted to avoid shooting as much of the action on location due to a lack of lighting control and time. Also, I didn't want to deal with the owner of the truck stop complaining about us staging a struggle between a man and a woman in a van in his parking lot. Might be bad for business.

So I managed to set up some lights to generally match the light emitting from the exterior of the location. I'll also place those lights when we shoot there, just to maintain that continuity. One challenge was the geography of it all. Blocking the scene required some thought in terms of how these two actually end up inside the cab of the van. Luckily, this scene will be inter-cut with a phone conversation in which Jack is relaying the event to another character; so we'll have a bit of a chance to cheat the cuts.

Anyways, the scene went amazingly and the actors were great. Deanna Jones and Dave Tompa were troopers in dealing with the 'barfing', selling it right to the last drop. I'm quite happy with the lighting as well. Anyways, here's another short video diary to accompany this scene. I don't want to spoil too much, so I'm making these things somewhat ambiguous. Enjoy!

Friends. Just wanted to let you know that we've set up a separate production blog [1] to keep all of you Film Junkies up to date on the filming of our short horror/thriller/comedy, Colore Non Vedenti [2]. We hope to document as much stuff as we can along the way, including some behind the scenes video diaries and pictures, stills and footage from the film, and written posts about certain challenges faced during production. Maybe even a podcast or two! Anyways, just follow the link below and check back now and again for updates. Oh, and we'll probably do a weekly update here on Film Junk as well. Enjoy!
