I'm going to need Reed Farrington to re-translate this shit back into English to assure accuracy. Until then, enjoy Klenginem: the Klingon Eminem. Thanks to Charlotte for the heads up on this one.

Moby's upcoming album was inspired in part by a speech by David Lynch on freedom in creativity, so it only makes sense that he would get the director to contribute the video for the first single.

I admit I was put-off by the crude animation at first, but after watching it a few more times I warmed up to the scratchy noir aesthetic. It's like Lynch's life work distilled into a three minute meditation on loss and hysteria, filtered through the work of Harry Stephen Keeler, David Goodis and Michael Kupperman. For all those Lynch fans, how do you feel this fits in his oeuvre?

Only a day in and already the remixes of Christian Bale's much talked about outburst are popping up. The crazy thing about this one; one of my favourite bands of recent years is behind it. The Mae Shi's ' HLLLYH' made my honourable mentions list of the best albums of 2008. (Not as great as their previous material featuring their original lead singer) It took these guys a day to write and record a new track, 'R U Professional', featuring some samples from Bale's rant. Not one of their better songs, but the fast turnaround is definitely impressive. Basically, this just gives me an excuse to post a few YouTube vids of some of my favourite Mae Shi songs. Check it all out below.

The theme song for the upcoming James Bond movie Quantum of Solace has been streaming online [1] for a while now, so there's a good chance you may have already heard it... but have you seen the music video? The song is a collaboration between Alicia Keys and Jack White and I kinda dig it. I agree that it's a bit more stripped down than your typical Bond theme, but what do you expect with Jack White involved? At least it's better than that Chris Cornell crap [2]! (Okay I actually liked that one too.) Check out the video for "Another Way To Die" below and let us know what you think.

Sure it's not exactly movie related, but it's still fun to post some cool videos on Film Junk now and again. This one isn't even really an official music video, but it's still way too awesome to pass up. I love long takes and choreography in videos, and this kid-friendly version of Feist's '1234' certainly delivers. Check it out:

Slightly more interesting and meaningful than Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 Movies of the Past 25 Years [1], is the list that they've published this week from Michel Gondry covering his favourite music videos of the past 25 years.

Gondry is only one of the most prolific and innovative music video directors of all-time, so it's interesting to see the kind of stuff that impresses him the most. I've included the full list after the jump (in no particular order), complete with YouTube links. To read some of his descriptions of each, check out the full article via the link at the bottom of the post.

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean [2]
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer [3]
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away [4]
Beastie Boys - Sabotage [5]

Bjork - It's Oh So Quiet [6]
Herbie Hancock - Rockit [7]
Jean-Luc Ponty - Individual Choice [8]

Slightly more interesting and meaningful than Entertainment Weekly's Top 100 Movies of the Past 25 Years, is the list that they've published this week from Michel Gondry covering his favourite music videos of the past 25 years.

They're taking over! Last week it was the cleverly choreographed, computer-parts rendition of Radiohead's Nude. This week, we get The Trons. A full fledged robotic band that generates some pretty catchy music. (It doesn't hurt that they're also pretty easy on the eyes.) I never thought the day would come when human musicians are no longer cool. That's right, the ladies have traded in the introspective, rebellious, artistic types for the heartless, soulless, emotionless types. I'm finally cool! Check it out:

I remember hearing about some contest in which Radiohead fans were encouraged to remix their song Nude. Is that what the contest was? I don't know, something like that. Either way, below is an insanely cool cover of the song using only out-of-date computer gear. Creator James Houston has assembled a motley crew of colourfully clunky and noisey computer parts to twitch and beep the rythm and melody of the song, with great success I might add. It sounds cool (haven't heard the original) and looks appropriately retro. Here's a list of the gear according to Houston's vimeo page [1]:

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Guitars (rhythm & lead)
Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer - Drums
HP Scanjet 3c - Bass Guitar
Hard Drive array - Act as a collection of bad speakers - Vocals & FX

Apparently he missed the actual deadline of the contest. Total buzz kill. This whole thing reminds me of Man Or Astro-Man's dot matrix printer antics back in 2001 [2]. Classic stuff. Check it out below.

A while back, Jay started a feature on Film Junk called "The Short Works Of...", in which he examined some well-known directors and showcased their work in other short-form mediums like music videos and TV commercials. In recent years, a background in music videos has come to have negative connotations, thanks to the overabundance of flashy, overstylized action and horror films flooding theatres. But that's not necessarily fair, because some of the most respected directors in the biz have started out doing music vids, and there is some brilliant stuff out there.

With the U.S. release of Son of Rambow [1], I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the previous work of British director Garth Jennings. In addition to directing The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, he has done plenty of stuff with his producer Nick Goldsmith under their company name Hammer & Tongs. You can see most of their work in the Cinema section [2] of the official Hammer & Tongs site, Tongsville [3].

Here are some of the highlights:

Blur - "Coffee & TV"
One of the first videos he became well-known for. In typical Jennings fashion, it's got some cute animated characters mixed with live action.

Short Film: The Pool Cleaner
Strange little mockumentary that features an interview with Jon Bon Jovi's pool cleaner (or is it?).

R.E.M. - "Imitation of Life"
A definite classic.

Beck - "Hell Yes"
Dancing robots. Awesome.

Fatboy Slim - "Right Here Right Now"
Evolution never looked so weird.

Da Ali G Show - Intro
Yep, Jennings directed the brilliant title sequence for Sacha Baron Cohen's show.

BT Broadband Commercial
Lots of crazy visual effects in this one.

Dolphin Singalong - "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish"
From the end credits of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Hot Chip - "Boy From School"
Another weird and surreal video.

Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"
The most recent Hammer & Tongs video release to date.

FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

You must check this out. 'Stress' is the latest single from Justice. A pounding, Daft Punk-esque instrumental accompanied by some pretty aggressive visuals that are ripe for controversy. Director Romain-Gavras [1] follows a gang of thugs sporting Justice bomber jackets as they terrorize a city, one person at a time. The visuals are insanely visceral, and the brutality gives Funny Games [2] a run for its money. Especially great is the decision to include the audio, mostly clipping and distorting throughout the video. The realism is disturbing at times, yet the cinematography is simply stunning. Check it out and leave your comments.

Unlike a lot of directors who got their start doing music videos and then moved on to doing strictly feature film work, Michel Gondry continues to make brilliant music videos in the downtime between film projects. Here's his latest piece, another weird-ass collection of visuals for Bjork's new single "Declare Independence". This is not the first time he's worked with Bjork, of course, he previously directed videos for "Human Behaviour" and "Army of Me", among others. Check out the new video below.
