Just in time to plug the release of Inglourious Basterds on DVD/Blu Ray next Tuesday, Eli Roth appeared on TMZ Live [1] today to challenge host Harvey Levin (I love Harvey Levin) at what they are calling the 'Final Jew-off'. Roth was recently featured on the TMZ TV show and was challenged to a rousing match of 'Jew, Not a Jew', and ended up crushing Harvey Levin at his own game. So today we get the final rematch, LIVE! Oh, today was also the first day of Hanukkah. How appropriate! Anyways, check out the first part above, and the rest after the jump!

I'm going to need Reed Farrington to re-translate this shit back into English to assure accuracy. Until then, enjoy Klenginem: the Klingon Eminem. Thanks to Charlotte for the heads up on this one.

For many people, Eastbound & Down left us far too soon. Thanks to the fine people at the Sundance Institute, you can salve your wounds with a short video [1] starring Danny McBride in which he takes a day off work to shred.

There are numerous other shorts [2] available as well, including an ode to slapstick comedy by the filmmakers behind Little Miss Sunshine and a take on the commercialization of revolutionaries by the director of Fast & Furious. Check them out and let us know what you think here. Thanks for the hook-up, Kurt [3]!

What a wonderful way to enter the long weekend. Stella Artois is running an ad campaign where they filter modern movies through the French New Wave of the 50s and 60s. The three shorts shown below are 8 Kilomètres (8 Miles), the delightfully existential Vingt-Quatre Heures (24), and my favourite, Dial Hard (12 Rounds). Now these are reimaginings I can get behind. I would pay cash money for a full-length featuring Inspector Meqlain. That cat is one cool customer. What movies would you most want to see get the same treatment?

Hollywood is notorious for tinkering with a project to the point that it barely resembles the original concept. Horror stories of test focus groups, endless unnecessary revisions and glorified accountants having a say in creative development abound. Writer Denis McGrath has taken this twisted mentality and applied it to Chuck Jones' classic One Froggy Evening [1], with hilarious results.

-re: the frog. Have you done research on Frog's lifespans? Does it track that this frog could survive from 1892 to 2056? Is his long lifespan tied into his ability to sing?

-Is the frog singing the right songs? Could we have him sing something that speaks to our demo better?

And make sure you read the comments, where other people join in with equally funny notes and corrections. But beware, if you work in the entertainment industry your laughter will be mixed with tears.

To refresh your memory, and because sometimes we all deserve a break from this cold, cruel world, the cartoon in question.

This story is for those of you (I'm looking at you Sean) who somehow still think there's a chance that Joaquin Phoenix's "I've quit acting to pursue rapping" career change could be real. Video has just surfaced of Mr.Phoenix attacking a heckler at a Belvedere IX (Whatever that means) party at Liv nightclub (Wherever that is) Wednesday night (Whenever that was). According to the New York Post:

Phoenix jumped into the crowd to confront a heckler. "But it was a fake fight," said our witness. "Nobody threw a punch. They were just holding onto each other."

Before you ask, yes Casey Affleck was in attendance and YES he just so happened to be wielding a video camera. It's one thing to see the major news outlets covering the story with no sign of irony, but the web savvy bloggers?? Even the sharp as a tack pop-culture commentator's over at Videogum seemed to take the bait. And of course, now that the cat is out of the bag, everybody thinks the whole thing is lame. I really don't understand our generation. Too much cynicism, a need to be right and a sensitivity to all that is 'fake' has pretty much ruined entertainment. If people get the slightest sense that they're being taken for a ride (see viral marketing...something I experienced first-hand last year [1]) they get pissed off and defensive rather than have fun with it. Welle's War of the World's broadcast and Andy Kaufman's Tony Clifton wouldn't last fifteen minutes thanks to the blog-o-verse's constant need to be the first to pull back the fucking curtain and find out who's pulling the strings and exclaim 'I'm not falling for it, asshole'. (I realize the element of hypocrisy in this statement, considering the fact that 1. I'm currently blogging, and 2. I've strongly stated in this post that I do believe this is fake. However, I do so only in response to those who think it's real...not as a proclamation of my or lack of desire or inability to be 'fooled'. I love being fooled. I think David Blaine's street magic is 100x more entertaining than the viral video spoofs it's spawned. I thought Luis Guzman's fake freakout on the set of Waiting was amazing. If David O. Russel or Christian Bale came out and said their tantrums were staged, I would say 'good show'. Got me?)

Only a day in and already the remixes of Christian Bale's much talked about outburst are popping up. The crazy thing about this one; one of my favourite bands of recent years is behind it. The Mae Shi's ' HLLLYH' made my honourable mentions list of the best albums of 2008. (Not as great as their previous material featuring their original lead singer) It took these guys a day to write and record a new track, 'R U Professional', featuring some samples from Bale's rant. Not one of their better songs, but the fast turnaround is definitely impressive. Basically, this just gives me an excuse to post a few YouTube vids of some of my favourite Mae Shi songs. Check it all out below.

I don't want to see character cross-promotion. I think it would cheapen the film. BUT...Rourke in the ring? Based off of this appearance on Larry King Live, I think things could get pretty entertaining. Now we just need to see Rourke in a neck brace being slapped on Letterman.

I don't want to see character cross-promotion. I think it would cheapen the film. BUT...Rourke in the ring? Based off of this appearance on Larry King Live, I think things could get pretty entertaining. Now we just need to see Rourke in a neck brace being slapped on Letterman.

Finally, it's here. It's all about supply and demand baby. Thus, we bring you the third episode of Cantankerous...in half a year. That's right, supply and demand. This episode Sean sits in and talks garbage with myself and Reed for just over an hour. We touch on Reed's shopping and eating habits, why white actors play white people and black actors play black people, existence and a fear of dying, and Reed details his frustration with the Dawson's Creek DVD boxed sets and the obsessive compulsive trouble he's gone through to work around the issue of inconsistent theme songs. Oh, and we touch on his journey to back up the internet on CD-R.

If that isn't enough, we've also included a special video companion piece to this episode. It turns out Reed is quite the cook, and about twenty years ago he decided to capture the magic on tape. Check out an edited version of 'Cooking With Gerry' below. (Cut down to 9 minutes from its original 48 MINUTE running time.) I do recommend you listen to the podcast before watching the video.
