So far three actresses has been rumored for the female lead in the upcoming fourth Mission: Impossible flick. Those has been Kristin Kreuk (TV's Smallville, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li), Paula Patton (Precious) and Lauren German (Hostel: Part II). Now Deadline has confirmed that Patton has come out as the victor and has gotten the role. Not much is known about her part, other than the fact that she'll play a young operative who has to work together with Ethan Hunt, who, as usual, is being portrayed by the always excellent yet underrated Tom Cruise.

In all honesty this is the first time I have ever heard of Patton, at least knowingly, since she's also had top billings in both Deja Vu, Swing Vote and Mirrors, all three of which I have actually seen. From what I can remember, I enjoyed her performance in each for what it was. She has yet to really stand out or shine in anything and I doubt that will be the case with Mission: Impossible 4 either.

The movie's being directed by Brad Bird of Ratatouille and The Incredibles fame, who's going to be having his live-action cherry popped with the film. Aside from Cruise and Patton, Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg will also star. Are you looking forward to M:I4?
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

Working Title Films has released the official plot synopsis for the upcoming sci-fi comedy Paul, which re-unites the comedy team of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead fame. The movie, which is being directed by Superbad director Greg Mottola, centers around the two sci-fi geeks Willy and Collings (played by Pegg and Frost) who accidentally come across the alien Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) when he jumps aboard their truck. Chased by the government, they embark on a road trip with Paul which changes their lives forever.

Check out the full plot synopsis below the break.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-travelling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost).

Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Paul is directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola, from a story by Pegg & Frost. Joining the comedy’s cast are Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, Joe Lo Truglio, John Carroll Lynch, David Koechner and Sigourney Weaver.

Paul hits theatres on March 18th, 2011; for more info, stay tuned to the official production blog.
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

A new trailer for the movie version of Robert Rodriguez' faux-trailer Machete, starring Danny Trejo as the title character, has surfaced. The trailer is sadly not up to par with the previously released trailer, but it does earn its keep by bringing something new and awesome to the table: the first proper look at Steven Seagal as the movie's bad guy!

It's a pretty weird feeling being excited about a movie starring Trejo and Seagal, but nonetheless that's what I am -- excited about a movie with Trejo and Seagal as the two main stars. I've had my doubts about Machete, but with the stellar supporting cast of Cheech Marin, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez among others, paired with Seagal's bad-ass moves with the swords and Trejo's good one-liners, I think Sylvester Stallone might just have a rival here for the best over the top action movie of the year. Watch the trailer below the break, and share your thoughts on the badassery!

Instead of wasting your money tomorrow by going to the cinema and watching The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, why not stay home, open a box of wine, pop some popcorn and play the 8-Bit version on YouTube instead?

8-Bit Twilight Eclipse Interactive is - as the name suggests - a series of interactive movies linked together, just like the Choose Your Own Adventure books, that promises the grand tale of Eclipse. The game is made by The Station and lets you play through Eclipse in its entirety (or at least what the makers see as the entirety). Don't fret, they haven't left out any of the good stuff! There's Edward looking sad, Jacob looking gay, and lots of cool 1980's style fighting, midi sound, and graphics that will blow your mind. Check it out below the break, and see if you can beat it!

The comic-based Keanu Reeves starring vehicle Constantine wasn't a big hit at the box office, and didn't really have that big of a loyal following, yet a sequel for the hellish thriller has been discussed ever since the movie came out. Talks about it goes forth and back, with some people claiming the project has died and others that it is alive and well, and will probably start shooting soon-ish. It's been about 5 years since the movie came out now, so a sequel was starting to seem less likely, especially seeing as it has now been quiet on the rumor front for quite some time. Well, until now, that is.

Super producer Lauren Shuler Donner has been talking (albeit very briefly) with the good folks over at Bloody Disgusting, and has confirmed that the project is not yet dead, and indirectly confirmed that there still is no chosen script, but that both the studio and Reeves are still interested in doing the sequel.

I hope [it happens]. I want to. We tried it, we always got there, and then we had a few bumps in the road. Keanu was involved with us, everybody was. We just had a few bumps in the road. We’re gonna try again...we heard a good take.

Personally I have yet to see Constantine, but I haven't heard anything all that good about it, at best the word of mouth has been that it's a mediocre and more or less forgettable adaption of the DC/Vertigo comic book Hellblazer. However I do love me some Reeves, and have usually liked most of his critic-panned flicks that I've seen, so I suppose I should check it out sometime. What say you, is it worth a watch? Are you game for a sequel?
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are now attached to direct Warner Bros.' proposed LEGO feature film, so says The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog. They really don't have anything else to report about the blocky toys, except for the fact that Lord and Miller's pitch is for the movie to take the live-action blended with CG route, which really doesn't make it sound more appealing, but rather less. However, apparently it did impress both Warners and the LEGO people, so game over naysayers, we're getting another Alvin and the Chipmunks... but with LEGOs!!!

Even though they've done the fancy presentation to win over both LEGO and Warners, this doesn't mean that we'll see blocks running around Manhattan anytime soon, as Lord and Miller are also attached to direct the big screen adaption of the old TV series 21 Jump Street, and that project comes first.

While I wasn't personally a big fan of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs -- the humor in it just wasn't my cup of tea -- I can respect the work they did on the film, adapting a short children's book into a feature length film. Everybody else seemed to love it, so if anybody is going to make a movie about LEGO with nothing else to base the script on, I believe they can pull it off. Does this announcement make you more interested in a LEGO movie?
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

Seeing as Journey to the Center of the Earth was complete garbage, I am puzzled as to why Brendan Fraser isn't keen on returning for the planned sequel. Films that are mediocre or worse are kind of his thing within Hollyvitz. However, he has chosen to skip this one since the director of the first film, Eric Brevig, is unavailable for the sequel because of a schedule conflict with another movie he is attached to direct: Yogi Bear. Apparently it just isn't worth taking a journey to the center of the earth without having Brevig at your side.

With Fraser gone, the movie will instead receive a rewrite and some restructuring for it to focus on the character of Sean Anderson (played by Bridge to Terabithia star Josh Hutcherson), the nephew of Fraser's character Professor Trevor Anderson. The movie is aiming for a release in the fall of next year.

Journey to the Center of the Earth 2 has also received a new director in the form of Brad Peyton, who has directed the upcoming feature Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore -- this sounds very promising indeed. There's a chance that Fraser could still return though, as this is basically the same stuff he went through with third Mummy flick, where he ultimately ended up reprising his role and the movie became a worldwide hit.
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

After the relative commercial success of the mishmash that was Hitman, Fox is not surprisingly pushing on for a sequel to the action film, which was based on the best-selling videogame series by Danish developers IO Interactive. Urgh. Where the games succeeded, the film failed. Being a professional killer was exciting and nail-bitingly suspenseful at times in the games, where you wondered if the passing guard around the corner was going to catch you before you disposed of the dead body you were currently dragging. In the film, every situation was overplayed and trying to be cool, rather than just letting the situation play out and be cool on its own. That, and the fact that Timothy Olyphant - who is usually brilliant - was horribly miscast as Agent 47, the film's lead.

Anyway, the sequel now has a director attached: Daniel Benmayor, who has previously directed the no-name film Paintball from 2009, a bunch of commercials, and just finished up production on his second feature film Bruc, a historical drama based around a drummer who helps give Napoleon's army the first taste of defeat. A new writer has also been attached to the project. Daniel Casey has previously written a script called Jimmy Six, which made it on to last year's Black List. It is still unknown whether or not he will completely rewrite the film, or work off of the script by Kyle Ward, who was hired to write the film back in June of last year. Cue Twilight Zone theme. Less than half a year after the death of actress Brittany Murphy, her husband, Simon Monjack, has been found dead. The cause of death has yet to be released, but the only thing known so far is that his mother-in-law found him in his residence in California in the master bedroom around 9:30 PM on Sunday. She immediately called for help, only for the paramedics to pronounce his death upon arrival. Monjack, who died at the age of 39, leaves no children behind.

Monjack, like his late wife, worked in the movie business, but as a writer, director and producer. His body of work consisted of just two movies though: the 2001 drama Two Days, Nine Lives, which he co-wrote, directed and produced, and the 2006 drama Factory Girl, which he wrote the story for and executive produced. All in all, Monjack was mostly known for being Murphy's other half, and for suing (without much luck) Warner Brothers over the fact that they chose not to ask Murphy back for the sequel to the 2006 animated film Happy Feet.

Some believe that Monjack's death was a suicide due to his inability to cope with the death of Murphy, but it is just a rumor and most likely a completely unfounded one too. If it is a mere coincidence, however, it sure is creepy.
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

First there was MacGyver, it was a golden time, a better time -- a time when you could make any technological device out of a piece of wood, a car battery and some strings. Then the dark ages came, and MacGyver went off the air. Time passed, the world was a gray and sad place, then MacGruber came! ... and made it all worse. Now things might turn around again however, as MacGyver is about to return! Oh yes, the rumors a few months back actually spoke the truth; MacGyver is returning, cinema-style!

New Line Cinema is handling the project and has hired a screenwriter for the flick. Sadly though, the writer they've hired is Jason Richman, the "brilliant mind" behind such films as Bangkok Dangerous, Swing Vote and Bad Company. Also, there's currently no word on whether or not Richard Dean Anderson will be returning to play the role of MacGyver once again or if this'll be some lean, mean reboot with edge, aimed at the cool kids, having some random hunk from Twilight or High School Musical grow a mullet. I sure hope Anderson will return, as a reboot would be lame, but it'll most likely turn out to be the reboot route they're taking, as Anderson is old-ish and that's what The A-Team did. That movie will end up a semi-hit at the very least.

Still, you never know, New Line has surprised me positively before, and they've had success with Stallone returning to play his signature characters Rocky and Rambo, so maybe, just maybe, they'll see some value in Anderson returning to play MacGyver? It's doubtful, but I'm trying out a new approach of staying positive and what not, so we'll wait and see. The film has potential.
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!

If these two can learn to stand each other... the bad guys don't stand a chance.

It's 1987 all over again! The reformed actor Mel Gibson is in talks to star in a spy thriller from Universal Pictures titled Cold Warrior (now it's almost 1981 all over again). If things go according to plan, this will reunite Gibson with Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 scribe Shane Black, who has been tapped to direct the flick from a script by newcomer Chuck Mondry, who hasn't previously written any features. Gibson has spoken out about the film, saying that he hopes to begin production on it in June, segueing into it after the end of filming How I Spent My Summer Vacation, which starts in March.

The movie, which will be produced by Michelle Manning (The Eye), centers around a spy from the Cold War era who comes out of retirement to team up with a younger agent in order to confront a domestic terrorism threat by Russia. No other names have yet been attached to the project, which will be the first studio backed project Gibson is toplining since the M. Night Shyamalan-directed thriller Signs from 2002. Now if they just get Danny Glover and Bruce Spence on board, this will be seriously freaky.
FOR MORE DAILY MOVIE GOODNESS, VISIT FILMJUNK.COM!
