Slowly but surely we’re starting to get a better picture of what James Cameron’s Avatar sequels will look like, and as it turns out, they’re probably going to look a lot like the first film. We already know that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will be back (and apparently so will Sigourney Weaver), but there has been a lot of speculation about who the new villain might be. Last month we even heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger might be playing that part. However, all along there have also been rumours that Stephen Lang might return as Colonel Quaritch. Now James Cameron himself has confirmed that Lang will be appearing in all three sequels. Here’s what he had to say:
“Stephen was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back… I’m not going to say exactly how we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.”
While I’m sure some this will cause more than a few people to roll their eyes, personally I am all for bringing back Quaritch, who was one of my favourite characters in Avatar. Still, it’s unclear if he will simply return in various flashback sequences or if it will be something a little more outlandish like a cyborg or a clone. A while back Cameron also told Vulture that in sci-fi stories “you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!” Now that’s a scary thought. What do you think about this news? Are you excited to see so many familiar faces returning for Avatar 2, 3 and 4?
