Well if there’s one thing you’ve gotta give AMC credit for, it is doubling down on their most successful shows and milking them for all they’re worth. They’ve already created pointless half-hour talk shows that revolve around The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, and now it looks like both shows will also be getting full-blown spin-offs. We heard last week that a Breaking Bad spin-off tentatively titled Better Call Saul had been officially greenlit, which makes sense considering that the show is currently in its final season. However, now this week we have learned that fans of The Walking Dead will be getting a second show to help satisfy their insatiable appetite for zombies as well. This despite the fact that the main series is only entering its fourth season and still has no end in sight.
According to THR, AMC is setting up a new companion series to The Walking Dead with the help of Robert Kirkman and executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert. The show is currently untitled and will supposedly revolve around new characters but it will set in the same universe. Showrunner Scott Gimple (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) says that he plans to remix Kirkman’s source material by “putting different fan favorites into familiar scenarios featured in the comics.” Kirkman had this to say:
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe… The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”
So is it based on the comics or isn’t it? I don’t get it. Either way, it sounds like an easy way to run a popular show into the ground if they aren’t careful. Personally I already lost interest in the original series so I doubt I will be tuning in for this one, but it seems like AMC is a little desperate what with Mad Men also ending soon and their latest show Low Winter Sun pulling in pretty poor ratings. What do you think, does the world really need more of The Walking Dead?
