4 hour show.
Posted by Tum Tum Tyranus on March 11th, 2013‘Celebrity Apprentice Spoiler Discussion’. This is going to be good.
Posted by rjdelight on March 11th, 2013Listening to myself ended up giving me a wonderful case of the nervous sweats. I think I like listening to myself about as much as Frank. What a dumb thing to do. I kept almost sending a follow up asking to have it not played, but figured I’d be some kinda coward.
But yeah, I am pretty biased, and I don’t think on an individual level seeing Ender’s Game matters, but I can’t say that I mind pressure being put on Card to back off is all. The thing is if there’s scorn to be had it should be focused there and not on random people who end up going to see a movie, kinda like your Nike example. That’s just being a righteous asshole. Like…Orson Scott Card.
Posted by Owozifa on March 11th, 2013Do you guys talk about episode 1 or 2 of celebrity apprentice? I wanna know what I’m catching up to. These discussions were the best last year.
Posted by Jonny Ashley on March 12th, 2013Skottie brought up Dream On Silly Dreamer. A fantastic little doc I saw in college that is a little depressing for anybody who’s ever aspired to be a Disney animator.
Posted by David on March 12th, 2013Great show, yet again. To keep a 50 year old Brit entertained week in, week out you Junkers are doing something right. Thanks for your time.
Posted by ProCynic on March 12th, 2013Skottie, you were great! Don’t sweat it, it was awesome to hear your contribution.
Posted by Jonny Ashley on March 12th, 2013Return to Oz is an amazing, overlooked, 80s fantasy gem. The ‘Soul Blazer’ to Labyrinth’s ‘Zelda’
Posted by Tum Tum Tyranus on March 12th, 2013“arte” is a french-german co-production. one of the best “durch die nacht” episodes features terry gilliam and john landis.

(if you’re intomusic you might also enjoy the show “tracks”.)
Posted by mirco on March 12th, 2013As soon as I saw the poster art for The Devil’s Sword pop up on Letterboxd I immediately went about getting a copy. I’m all about crocodile men.
Jay’s deception kinda reminds me of The Killing of Satan (which is a wonderfully messed up movie) and the whole crocodile men kinda made me think of Conquest for some reason. What are the guys in that movie? I can’t remember entirely other than they rip a girl in half for fun.
Posted by Owozifa on March 12th, 2013Actually, Hungover is kinda famous for being a one part movie. There were never any commitment for a trilogy from anyone which really backfired for the studio as all participants got amazing payrises for the second and the third one.
After the first one was a hit, suddenly it “always was a trilogy” which is total bs.
Posted by ColinZeal on March 12th, 2013Fan Expo will have three exhibition halls set-up in the North building. One will be exclusively for the Sports section and two will be for additional “geek” content.
Speaking of pro wrestlers, Hulk Hogan will be one of the main sports guests.
BTW, Toronto has a separate event named Toronto ComicCon (also run by Hobbystar), which ran last weekend and featured the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Posted by Sean Kelly on March 12th, 2013you did good Skottie
Posted by kyri on March 12th, 2013What is the music you use in the intro to the show?
Posted by Ryan Terry on March 12th, 2013Pogo – Wizard of Meh
Posted by Sean on March 12th, 2013All that poop talk and no one mentioned that The Marine 3 is directed by a guy named Scott Wiper.
Posted by Steve on March 12th, 2013Jay, I’m quietly relieved you enjoyed Dive Bomber – so close to a perfect score (damn you, comedic relief). Hoping you’ll get a chance to watch Out of the Blue sometime this week as I’m keen to hear your thoughts.
Posted by Matt the Kiwi on March 12th, 2013Interesting fact about the animal deaths in Charge of the Light Brigade (one of the few Flynn films I’ve yet to see). How on earth did they think killing a bunch of horses on film would be cool with everyone? Being a hollywood horse is not all hot phillys and endless oats.
For terrible cover art, I think MGM has been up there for crapping it up. Or maybe that should technically be blamed on Fox, I’m not sure.
I think one of the worst covers I’ve seen in the last while was Killer Klowns From Outer Space:

Can we all agree that font is an absolute travesty? It’s all just an abomination.
Posted by Owozifa on March 12th, 2013Has anyone suggested a “Terry”-centric premium podcast yet?
Posted by Nat Almirall on March 12th, 2013@Nat
I’d love to see that too, as I’m a pretty big Gilliam fan. I looked up and saw he’s got a movie coming up called The Zero Theorem.
“The story centres on Qohen Leth, a reclusive computer genius working on a formula to determine whether life holds meaning.”
Does Gerry know they stole his film idea?
Posted by Owozifa on March 12th, 2013Great podcast guys. Hope you have Skottie on again sometime.
Posted by Angie on March 12th, 2013Jay: Thanks for talking about The Devil’s Sword. Just saw it and f*cking loved it. Though I disagree with your assessment that it’s an attempt to emulate American fantasy. I think it’s pure Asian fantasy through and through.
Owozifa: Ha, the crocodile men is what got me to watch it. Warning though, they don’t appear until later on, so don’t be disappointed/mistake them for the guys with crocodile cowls who show up early on. Anyways, come for the crocodile men, but stay for all the strange exploitative awesome.
Steve:
Posted by Tum Tum Tyranus on March 12th, 2013Great episode – I loved it that the Apprentice talk had the intro music. Amazing.
Also, the sound on Skottie was GREAT – I was so worried because this was done over Skype that it would sound total garbage. How was the sound recorded, Sean? Through the Skype call or on Skotties own computer and then mixed in with your recording of the rest of you guys to create the best possible sound?
Posted by Kasper on March 12th, 2013Greg, The Staircase 2 just aired on Sundance in the US. Two episodes about the possibility of a new trial. It’s great stuff — you gotta find it!
Posted by sansho1 on March 12th, 2013Skottie Young was an amazing guest. He brought industry insider insight, humor, and good film critique understanding. His style really gelled well with the Film Junk crew. Please have him back again soon.
Posted by Thurston on March 12th, 2013Great show, guys. Skottie was a great guest.
Posted by Aaron on March 13th, 2013@Owozifa: Interesting about The Zero Theorem. Thx for referencing my short, “Scientific Method.”
Posted by Reed Farrington on March 13th, 2013Skottie Young 5/5
Posted by Sly on March 13th, 2013Kasper: The entire thing was recorded on our end. I think Skype is just a crap shoot and it depends a lot on your internet connection. I used a wired connection just to ensure that there was no wi-fi sketchiness. It also helped that Skottie had a great mic.
Posted by Sean on March 13th, 2013Skottie was a great guest, he offered great perspective and had chemistry with the crew. He should definitely come back when the opportunity opens up.
Celebrity apprentice talk with the music intro was a total creamdreamsupreme.
There should be a mashup premium that is just a sampler of every “_____ Junk” idea. At this point, I think there’s ball junk, food junk, animal junk, Disney junk, Roseanne aka corn junk, and I’m sure many that I forgot.
I agree with Jay on the Frank/Gerry similarities. Frank is like a Bizarro Gerry. Instead of being a miser, Frank spends money like a champ with an amazing baby blu collection, Miami Vice couches, and numerous gaming gear. Sometimes Gerry can come of as a bitter contrarian, where Frank has more of a happy-go-lucky nature. Bizarroness aside, Frank has some similarities to Gerry in that they both have an affinity for anatomically correct stuffed animals.
Posted by Chris From Chicago on March 13th, 2013I totes prefer Criterion’s BJM cover to the original poster. You’re off your rocker.
Posted by piggystardust on March 13th, 2013As someone diagnosed with OCD, that’s the similarity I see between Frank and Gerry. Or at least the same spectrum. It has many manifestations. A big clue is when Frank says stuff like “I wish I didn’t have to think about it, but I do” in regards to some aspect of organization. It’s also a mindset that makes for good programmers, so it’s not surprising. It’s got its upsides as long as it doesn’t get out of control.
But on that front I’d be more worried about Gerry. I say that as someone else with a very strong hoarding instinct that I’ve managed to battle.
Posted by Owozifa on March 13th, 2013Oh man, Passion In the Desert! I never took the plunge, but for years just seeing the cover art on the shelf at my local Blockbuster was good for a laugh. I mean, who could resist this:
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1511824640/tt0125980
What the hell is going on there?
Posted by sansho1 on March 13th, 2013Is Skottie the new Frank? Is Frank the new Reed? Is Reed the…?
Posted by Bob on March 13th, 2013Damned fine episode guys. Thank you!
Skottie was great, but i have one complaint because i’m an ahole.
Skottie you did great m’man, but can we pleeease! For the love of all that is holy! Stop the over use of the word “Like” before literally every thought and statement one has these days? If you cut it by 50% you’d still be using it too much. I wanted to punch myself in the jibblies many, many times during the podcast while yelling at you, just say no to “like!” Skottie!
Sean does it too, but i pretend i smack him upside his perfect bald head and i’m good.
Luv u’z guys!
Posted by Danno on March 13th, 2013I’m trying to work on the likes. It’s a hard habit to break. You get into the zone and you just aren’t aware of it.
Posted by Sean on March 14th, 2013Loved the episode. I wasn’t aware of how many books were written after the original. You can purchase all the Baum Oz books for $0.99 at Kobo and iTunes. I’m going to start reading the novels until I get a chance to see this “prequil”.
Posted by dave from edm on March 14th, 2013Haha! I hear ya Sean.
I thought for sure your response would look more like this.
“I’m like..trying to work on the likes. It’s like..a hard habit to break. You like..get into the zone and you just like..aren’t aware of it.”
Lol.
It’s so prevalent today, i hear it allday from the kids(and sadly adults)these days, it’s a petty thing i know, but i still want to dropkick em in the nuts for it.
Posted by Danno on March 14th, 2013Still can’t believe Skottie was Skyping. Audio was so good I thought that maybe he made some crazy trek to Southern Ontario for this podcast haha. Muy Bueno!
Posted by devolutionary on March 15th, 2013Great show and guest. Cheers !
