Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Disney 2D Animated Feature?

As Disney becomes more and more reliant on live-action blockbusters like Oz the Great and Powerful and CG animated features like the Pixar films, it is starting to look as though 2D animated films are pretty much dead at the Mouse House. At a Walt Disney Company shareholders meeting this week, CEO Bob Iger revealed that none of the Disney studios “are currently developing, or have plans to develop, any 2D, hand drawn animation for the big screen.” While this doesn’t come as a huge surprise, it is still somewhat sobering to hear. With that in mind, I thought it might be a good time to look back on some of the great 2D animated films that Disney has given us over the past 75 years. What do you think is the best Disney animated film? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then sound off in the comments below.

Nice to see Frank influencing the blog posts for once.

Posted by Paul Sinclair on March 7th, 2013Upon rewatching Lion King I almost thought it was a perfect movie, until I got to Timon and Pumba, who really date the entire film. I’ve got to say Pinocchio. It’s pure fairy tale, has an awesome story. In addition to its gorgeous cel animation and matte paintings, it uses other hand drawn media throughout including the painted whale scene.
Posted by Jonny Ashley on March 7th, 2013David Mamet’s “perfect film” Dumbo not making the cut, huh?
It’s between Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty for me. Fantasia I both love and think its a pretty incredible milestone of animation. Sleeping Beauty is a little more personally a movie I find pleasing and visually awesome and I can throw it on any time. It doesn’t have quite the daring of Fantasia, though. So I’ll have to go Fantasia. Rite of Spring and Night on Bald Mountain are amazing.

You’re dead on. I probably would have chosen Dumbo. That and Sleeping Beauty are my childhood favorites. Can’t believe how much love Sleeping Beauty isn’t getting.
Posted by Theo on March 7th, 2013I bet if you include ‘The Jungle Book’ it’ll win.

Yeah when I saw 0 votes (at the time) I almost kinda regretted not going for Sleeping Beauty.
In all honesty it’s majorly hard for me between Dumbo, Fantasia, and Sleeping Beauty. Disney has a pretty solid catalog of choices. Funnily I’m not really as big on The Lion King, which seems to be the going favorite.
Posted by Owozifa on March 7th, 2013Pinocchio, for it’s epic creepiness.
Posted by Mrespony on March 8th, 2013Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme…
Posted by Jr on March 8th, 2013You can’t have this poll without The Jungle Book or Alice in Wonderland.
Posted by Brian on March 8th, 2013Jungle Book and Pinocchio or death.
Worst film: The Lion King. (and I don’t mean worst Disney animated film, I mean worst film.)
Posted by DavidM on March 8th, 2013Lion King far and away the best. Though 101 Dalmatians holds the most significance for me personally.
Posted by piggystardust on March 8th, 2013Three Caballeros has always been my favorite, but yeah, Lion King. Or Rescuers.
Posted by Steve on March 8th, 2013Rescuers Down Under
Posted by Scott on March 9th, 2013No Jungle Book, no vote.
It has the best villains and the best musical moment:
