Jason Momoa in Talks to Join Guardians of the Galaxy?

A couple of years ago, it seemed like Jason Momoa was on the verge of stardom with a memorable turn as Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones and a headlining role in Marcus Nispel’s Conan reboot. Unfortunately, Conan the Barbarian tanked and Momoa was forced to shoulder at least some of the responsibility. It wasn’t until just a few weeks ago that he turned up on screen again in Bullet to the Head, a movie that also happened to crash and burn at the box office. Coincidence? Well, either way, it looks like he may be getting one more shot at carrying a major tentpole film as he is now reportedly being pursued for a role in one of Marvel’s comic book flicks. If things work out, he will be the second official addition to the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to Latino Review, Jason Momoa has been offered the part of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy (ie. the big green, muscle-bound guy that looks like Martian Manhunter). Word on the street is that Marvel’s offer came in pretty low, but negotations are still on going. Other actors that supposedly tested for the part include Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade and Dave Bautista.

Drax is a former saxophonist (seriously) who was killed by Thanos while driving across the Mojave Desert with his family. He was then resurrected by Kronos (Thanos’ grandfather) with enhanced strength, flight, and the ability to shoot energy blasts from his hands in order to defeat him. Unfortunately, the resurrection also damaged his brain, making him relatively dim-witted. As ridiculous as this all sounds, I can see why they would have their sights set on Momoa. What do you think of this potential casting choice?

As long as he just stands quietly and just kicks a few heads It’ll be alright…

What’s a reasonable offer for a guy that’s on a losing streak that hasn’t proven himself to be a draw yet though? The real win for Momoa might be if he took whatever Marvel was offering him and just used the opportunity to it’s fullest to make his “Guardians” performance a star-making turn. A lot of Marvel movie stars were low-balled in the beginning and have used the Marvel movies to make or resuscitate their careers, which has probably worked out better in the long run.

    agree with plan B

  • CrumbThumber

fascinating that the only character this guy can play speaks in a made up language

He killed it in Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo though. He was the perfect cast for it and did better than anyone could have asked. So you cant say he does nothing but bad stuff.

Not bad necessarily, but ever since Game of Thrones (which he’s no longer on), he’s been box office poison, so he’s lucky to get the opportunity if Marvel wants him.
