Film Junk Premium Podcast: The Die Hard Series

Yippee ki yay meal farmers! Welcome to the latest instalment of the Film Junk Premium Podcast! This time around we’re digging into one of the most beloved action franchises in cinema history; the Die Hard series. While we mostly agree the first three films are pretty solid — if not classic — we still manage to find lots to disagree on. Some highlights include a discussion about the logistics of calling an airplane from a landline, John McClane’s penchant for eyeliner, and Hans Gruber’s amazing Eurotrash tie. Meanwhile, things get a little tense as Sean attempts to defend Len Wiseman’s widely despised entry in the series. Is McClane just old and grumpy or has Bruce Willis lost the spirit of the original character? How do you get 2 gallons of water into a 3 gallon jug? Holly Gennero…hot or not? As a bonus, we also talk about the Die Hard inspired Steven Seagal classic Under Siege, co-starring a particularly rambunctious Tommy Lee Jones and Erika Eleniak’s eyebrows. So relax, take off your shoes, make fists with your toes, and enjoy this episode of the Film Junk Premium Podcast. (Note: this episode does NOT include A Good Day to Die Hard, which we’ll be discussing on the next episode of the Film Junk Podcast.)

Posted by Arnold Schizopolis on February 14th, 2013Speaking of marketing, this is the second time you’ve released a premium podcast right after a Beauty Day post! Our pockets only be so deep yo!
Posted by piggystardust on February 14th, 2013You want a miracle? I give you The…Film…Junk.
Posted by Thurston on February 14th, 2013I’m excited, and nervous because I know the fourth one will be shit on. But I can’t wait to listen.
Posted by Indianamcclain on February 15th, 2013A great birthday gift. Thanks guys!
Posted by Essie on February 15th, 2013Since Under Siege got a good beating, it IS Die Hard on a Ship, and emerged as a Winner, why not a Steven Seagal (The good old Days) podcast with Hard to Kill, Under Siege 1 and 2, Above the law and On deadly Ground.
That would be a great, and great for the on and only Seagal.
I´am not drunk. I really like the Guy.
Posted by Stinker on February 15th, 2013Just in time for the weekend. Thx guys.
Posted by Jay on February 15th, 2013love the podcast, totally agree with frank in every aspect (specially the loathing od die hard 4.0)! i was surprised that no one catched the pathtic lines about USA in the fourth part and lucy saying that she is mclane and not gennaro today in live free..
Posted by milandob on February 15th, 2013I was hoping one of you guys would have mentioned the TV edit of Die Hard With A Vengeance. In it, the sandwich board that McClane has to wear is changed to “I Hate Nincompoops”. Unintentionally the funniest part of any of the movies.
Posted by FDB on February 15th, 2013I’m with Sean on Die Hard 4.0, solid action film with great set pieces. And Justin Long was surprisingly good. I too liked his little ad lib moments(eg.”how did you do yours”). My problem with the film are the Cliff Curtis scenes, which would kill the pace every time they cut back to him and his team.
I’m surprised Jay didn’t talk about the cool parkour scenes and how they were blatantly influenced by District 13.
Posted by Tum Tum Tyranus on February 15th, 2013Love the Duty Free/Seinfeld song, Frank!
Posted by bard on February 15th, 2013Die Hard 2 is to me by far the worst of the series. Mediocre in every aspect. 3/5. Die Hard being the best with a 5/5, Die Hard 3 with a 4.5/5 and Die Hard 4 with a 3.5/5.
Posted by Kasper on February 15th, 2013Woah guys, AMAZING fantasy line-up. When Beastmaster wasn’t mentioned at first I was stunned – good thing it made it in there anyway. This is my most-anticipated premium yet!
Posted by Kasper on February 16th, 2013Empty 3 and 5 Jug.
3 L into the 3 Jug, then the 3 L into the 5 L Jug.
Then fill the 3 L Jug, put 2 Liter into the 5 L Jug to fill it up.
That leaves 1 L in the 3 L Jug. Empty the 5 L Jug, fill the 1 L from the 3 L Jung into the 5 L Jug.
Posted by Stinker on February 17th, 2013Then a full 3 L Jug into the 5 L jug, and you got 4 L into the 5 L Jug.
Surprised at how Jay was off the mark in his understanding of a couple small tidbits in the original Die Hard plot. Thankfully Frank was there to clear up the errors!
I can see why Jay might have been a bit confused on this point: The thing is, the watch was a gift from the company. That Ellis is the one that points it out is Ellis taking a shot at McClane’s lower class life. Like ‘Yeah take a look at what we get here. Bet you blue collar cops don’t get Rolex’s.’
It just further cements McClane as being out of his element and having to deal with his wife being the ‘breadwinner’ of the family (which in the 80s was a relatively new thing). It’s likely the whole reason for the split between them in the first place.
Minor, I know, but I always thought that was pretty obvious in the movie. Then again, Jay’s description of what makes a real Christmas movie more than makes up for a few little things like this.
Posted by milath on February 20th, 2013The “WTF?” when the sandwich board is first spotted by the black guy retrieving the basketball is the best ever. Makes me smile every time
