Despite Harmony Korine’s reputation as an unapologetic provocateur who makes antagonistic art films, something tells me that his next film Spring Breakers has the potential to be a commercial hit of sorts. With a cast that includes James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, it was one of the hottest tickets at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was eventually acquired by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures. However, that’s not to say that the movie looks conventional… quite the opposite, in fact.

The plot revolves around four college girls who stage a robbery in order to fund a spring break vacation. When they wind up in jail, they get bailed out by a local rapper / drug dealer named Alien (Franco) who offers them the ultimate party experience in exchange for their help. The first trailer has arrived online this week and it looks frenetic and hilarious but also disturbing and surreal. I still don’t really know what to expect, but it looks like must-see material if you ask me. Spring Breakers hits select theatres on March 22nd; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
