If you’ve ever wondered whether Michael Bay could go back to directing movies that cost less than $100 million to make, you’re about to find out the answer. His next movie Pain & Gain takes him back to essentially the beginning of his career, before he became known for making massive sci-fi blockbusters like Transformers and Armageddon. There is still plenty of slow-mo, scantily clad women and magic hour shots, but maybe a few less explosions this time around.

The movie is an action-comedy based on the true story of a pair of dim-witted bodybuilders who get caught up in a kidnapping and extortion ring in Miami. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson star along with Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong, Rob Corddry and Tony Shalhoub. It definitely looks like a Michael Bay movie I can get behind as the subject matter seems perfectly suited to his own fetishes as a director. Will this end up being one of the surprise hits of 2013?
