Was someone saying something about 2013 being a potential banner year for science-fiction? Over the past week we’ve seen a flood of trailers for upcoming sci-fi films including Upstream Color, Star Trek Into Darkness and Oblivion. Now today prepare yourself for the premiere of the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth.

While there are plenty of things that could cause people to write this project off almost immediately (M. Night Shyamalan, another Will Smith / Jaden Smith team-up), the trailer definitely feels unlike any Shyamalan film I’ve seen to date. It looks to be largely a solitary story of survival on a post-apocalyptic Earth (not unlike Oblivion), but the script was also co-written by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), which gives me some hope.
