Upstream Color Trailer: The New Film from the Director of Primer

It’s been eight years now since Shane Carruth’s mindbending sci-fi film Primer was first released, and although it’s still consistently heralded as the most believable and scientifically sound take on time travel ever captured on screen, his filmmaking career has essentially remained at a standstill ever since. This seems to be partially by choice, but also because his ideas for future films are too insane to secure any sort of funding. Carruth recently gave Rian Johnson a hand with the logic behind Looper and has also been in development on a mysterious movie called A Topiary over the past few years. But it wasn’t until another new project called Upstream Color turned up in next year’s Sundance line-up that it became apparent that his return as a writer/actor/director was nearly upon us.
Now the first trailer for Upstream Color has arrived over at Apple, and it is… intriguing, to say the least. The plot synopsis reads simply: “A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism.” Clearly it involves some sort of science-fiction weirdness, but there isn’t much else to go on at the moment. The cinematography looks to be a lot more gorgeous than the grainy simplicity of Primer, however. Upstream Color premieres at Sundance in January and will hit select theatres on March 22nd; check out the teaser trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.
