Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmasters Trailer

Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai is known more for mood pieces and touchy-feely art house films than for kung fu action flicks, but that is precisely why there is so much anticipation surrounding The Grandmasters, his upcoming biopic about Bruce Lee’s legendary martial arts teacher Ip Man. The movie has been in development for five years now, and it stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai (In the Mood for Love, 2046) in the lead role along with Zhang Zi Yi, Chang Chen, and Cung Le. I know at least one person who probably can’t contain himself right now and his name rhymes with Creed Carrington.

Ip Man’s story has already been covered quite well by Wilson Yip with his own film Ip Man starring Donnie Yen, so it says something about Wong Kar Wai’s reputation that people are still very excited about his take on the material. The first full trailer has arrived online this week, and without English subtitles it’s a bit hard to tell what’s going on, but you can still get a feel for the exquisite visuals. If you’re not yet sick of seeing water droplets in slow motion, this is the movie for you. The Grandmasters hits theatres in China on Dec. 18th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

  1. Reed’s wheel-house?

  2. I love WKW, but this has me a bit concerned… WKW is at his best when he’s shooting gritty Hong Kong with questionable film stock and low shutter speeds (i.e. Chungking Express, Fallen Angels), not when he’s creating overly glossy epics (i.e. Ashes of Time, 2046).

  3. I am a big defender of 2046, but I do kind of agree with you, Colin.

  4. I was disappointed with “Ashes of Time” in regards to the filming of the fight scenes. The early released scene from “The Grandmaster” of the fight in the rain didn’t thrill me. I do find this new trailer awesome just for the frame compositions and cinematography. I regard “2046″ as a masterpiece; it makes me think and the soundtrack invigorates me.
