Film Junk Premium Podcast: George A. Romero’s Trilogy of the Dead

In preparation for Halloween this year, we decided to barricade ourselves in Frank’s basement to record our first ever horror-themed premium podcast. George A. Romero’s Trilogy of the Dead is a great place to start, a varied and visceral trifecta of films that have permanently left their mark on the genre. Dan O’Bannon’s horror-comedy Return of the Living Dead also provides a zany counterpoint to top it all off, and with some of us experiencing these iconic films for the first time, you never know where the conversation might go. From punk rock chicks who lack genitalia to the realities of living in a mall and the age old slow-moving versus fast-moving zombie debate, there is plenty here to sink our teeth into. Didn’t we whip ‘em? We sure did buddy.

  1. Nice. I’m not sure how much I have on my debit card right now so I only donated 1 dollar at the risk of overdraft. I’ll pay more for the next one.

  2. Threw $20 your way. Thanks guys!

  3. Send.. more.. paramedics

  4. So cool dudes. Hell YES! Crack open a cold one, barricade the windows against the impending zombie hordes, select a trust worthy melee weapon and roll up your sleeves…this premium podcast is about to get real. Goddamn do I ever love Halloween.

  5. Kicked in a thousand bucks. Can’t wait to listen to it. Love NOTLD!

  6. lol. That day of the Dead poster reminds me of Peter weyland from prometheus.. ……hm…. maybe the makeup was intentional?
…it’s a bit annoying that you can’t live stream the show with Bandcamp, I have a 500kbps internet connection and I must wait 2 hours 5 minutes each time.

    wait.. now it’s 1 hour 55 minutes..

  7. I love film junk <3

  8. Jay: I’ve heard that that story about people running out on the train film was a myth. It seems like a turn of the century version of the ad campaign for Hostel, where supposedly someone had to be rushed to the emergency room during a screening. You hear these kinds of wives tales at any film festival.

  9. lol @ Jay ending the special with the much loved DotD Goblin theme, rubbing it in Sean’s face for listing it on his top 5 worst.

  10. Albeit I have no specific interest in the Dead Trilogy this was a great listen. I’m much more interested in the upcoming Bond cast though, gonna be sweet!

  11. I think I said it before, but for your Roger Moore Bond, you have to do Live and Let Die — it has Frank written all over it.

  12. I think we’re looking at doing both Live and Let Die and Moonraker.

  13. the whole goblin soundtrack is great even though it sounds dated. The music is really cool.

  14. Can’t wait for Bond! Live and Let Die is my favourite.

Think I’ll wait till Halloween to listen to this one. Can’t remember if I’ve even seen the third of the Dead series… is it the one when they are in some kind of underground facility?

  15. Be real men and discuss all the James Bond films.

I don’t see what the big deal is. You start with the Sean Connery years… his bests, his worsts – and then you work your way through the series that way. Frankly, there’s not all that much to discuss regarding some of these films. No need to spend 30 minutes on Diamonds Are Forever.

This “pick two films to discuss for every Bond actor” sounds like something the Director’s Club Podcast would do! Truly hackneyed.

I know this is about Jay, who for some reason refuses to watch the Bond films, looking to get the easy way out and just watch a couple of ‘em. He should watch all the 22 Bond films in preparation for this podcast – or so help me God…

  16. Correct, JohhnyBlazed. That’s the one.

  17. Loved this podcast and it’s kind of interesting to get one of these bonus podcasts where there are a few stark differences in opinion.

Picking what movies to watch for Bond is going to be hard I imagine, but honestly if you’re doing two per actor I’d think about bumping Timothy Dalton down to one and Connery up to three. I’d imagine the go-to combination for Connery otherwise will be Dr. No and Goldfinger, and not including From Russia with Love seems like a tragedy to me. Almost on the level of including Indiana Jones in the title of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

  18. I would bump Brosnan down to just one film as well, the only one of his films worth talking about is Goldeneye. The rest of his films are so dull I doubt they would even be fun to shit on.

I agree with Owozifa about Dr.No and Goldfinger, but would add You only Live Twice as a third pick. Sean Connery turning Japanesey has to be discussed.

  19. You’ll never please everyone with your choices for the Bond films, so I’ll just take whatever we get. That said, I think Moonraker is worth a look as it kind of stands out all on its own with the “Bond in Space” theme. Thanks for the great Premium cast!

  20. Instead of choosing which films to see and which ones to avoid, why not just watch them all but do it over the course of two podcasts so you “only” have to watch 11 each time? Kind of like the Star Wars podcasts… but with 16 more movies.

  21. This is the line-up for the Bond premium:

    - Goldfinger
    - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    - Live and Let Die
    - Moonraker
    - The Living Daylights
    - Goldeneye
    - Casino Royale

We’re only doing two for Moore because he had so many and because they’re all pretty different. But as Kasper says, if we don’t cover your favourite film here, there’s always a chance we’ll do a second Bond cast eventually.

  22. I hadn’t seen any, wasn’t sure which Bond movies were worth watching. Thanks for cherry picking them for me, I’ll start watching those after my Halloween horror marathon.

  23. Wonder if the comments section for the Bond Premium show will contain any comments about Romero’s Dead trilogy. Probably not. Anyhoo, enjoyed the show guys, nice to see a show that isn’t sci-fi/action oriented. This series has been a favorite of mine since the mid-Eighties and your comments were well considered. Also, Jay’s Scott Reiniger impression was killer.

  24. Hearing Frank talk about these movies is horrifying. Also, the Goblins’ scores always rule in everything.

  25. Great Show

    One point Re the Mexican racism discussion;

Jay: “Its his fault, its his yellow fucking fault”
Frank: “part of the Mexican racism I alluded to, but I’ve never heard a Mexican referred to a racist before”

    Thats because they aren’t!

Shirley he calls him yellow because he thinks he’s a coward? They even allude to him being cowardly earlier.

Thats what yellow means isn’t it Greg? As in yellow belly.

Why much Frank turn every conversation into an argument about racism? Hmm

  26. Frank redeemed himself once they got to Dawn…

  27. Can someone please list the three Romero’s movies the guys talk about, that way i can watch them first before i listen to the podcast.

    Thanks!

  28. Night of the Living Dead
    Dawn of the Dead(1977)
    Day of the Dead
    Return of the Living Dead

  29. I have seen the Millennium Edition of Night of the Living Dead, does it have loud thunder sound effects during the opening graveyard scene?

  30. oops, meant to say “I haven’t seen…”

  31. Couldn’t wait for Halloween so rewatched Day of the Dead last night. All my memories of it came flooding back. Rewatching it as an adult makes me wonder how I ever found it scary, but as a kid the first ten minutes when they arrive back at the base and then reveal the caverns underground where the zombies are held terrified me. The hum of all the zombies moaning really shit me up as well.
watching it now is a completely different experience though.

The Bond list looks great, although I think I’ll pass on rewatching Moonraker, that film is a real pile of shit.
Has anybody got the Bond 50 Blu-ray collection? I can’t decide whether the upgrade to Blu is worth it… I have a few of the films on DVD, wouldn’t mind owning all of them though, especially if they look good.
