Film Junk Premium Podcast: The Indiana Jones Series

Indiana Jones

With the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, Indiana Jones secured a spot in cinema history alongside Star Wars as one of the defining blockbuster franchises of the 1980′s. In 1984 Temple of Doom gave us the PG13 rating and in ’88 The Last Crusade taught us to always remember our Charlemagne. Then, 20 years later Lucas and Spielberg would add inter-dimensional beings to the mix, simultaneously nuking the fridge whilst raping the childhoods of millions of thirty-somethings around the world. Still, even the sight of an uncharacteristically agile Mutt Williams swinging vine with a gaggle of CG monkeys couldn’t taint what many consider to be one of the best movie trilogies ever. Now that all four films have been rereleased on blu ray, we figured it was time to revisit this classic film franchise and tackle some of the tough questions. There’s lots to discuss here including the availability of direct flights to Venice in the 1930′s, Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Skull Vodka, forgotten Nazi luggage, and savvy Mom’s driving boat cars (and gloating about it). I think it’s safe to say this episode of the Film Junk Premium Podcast will leave you as giddy as a schoolboy. You have chosen…wisely.

  1. Threw $20 your way. Thanks guys!

  2. Quick turnaround from Greg returning!

Looking forward to your opinions entering my earholes like a firm, yet gentle lover, slowly pumping into my brain…

Oh yeah baby, give me that hot contrary viewpoint. You know what I like…

    I um… thanks.

    :P

  3. Havent been this excited for a premium since Batman

  4. Purchased! 30$! Thx guys. Listening to the latest Film Junk while buying this… Frank is going on about Disney!!

  5. My dick just got hard. Rock hard.

  6. I was really hoping for someone’s favorite to be the fact that Indy’s a pedophile and for someone’s worst to be Nazis. I hate those guys.

  7. I hate grasshoppers as well ..they eat my rose plants

  8. One of the best premiums so far! Loved it!

  9. Any chance we might get a premium of something that isn’t a classic action movie? I’ve kind of heard all these set-piece discussions once or twice before it seems, would be cool to hear you talk about a movie you haven’t seen 100 times already, and might instill some new thoughts…

  10. Lizards without legs? Sounds like “against war motives” but then I looked it up. Frank is right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_lizard I bet the legless lizards eat grasshoppers.

  11. Im surprised Jay made a complete 180 on Crystal Skull.

  12. “Im surprised Jay made a complete 180 on Crystal Skull.”

Haven’t listened to the premium yet, but that is interesting to hear.

I remember Jay always used to defend it when it was brought up on the regular cast, and he always seemed to characterize anyone who disliked KOTCS as a reactionary fanboy.

It all boils down to that jungle chase. That jungle chase is garbage.

  13. @Henrik I actually agree somewhat.

I don’t think the guys are doing anything but what the audience wants tho. I think a lot of people want to hear breakdowns of their favorite movie franchises. And they are fun listens, of course.

That said, I’d love to hear a couple more casts similar to the Christmas themed one they did w/ Reed. Where each guy picks a film (and have a theme or particular director perhaps, to further narrow the field) and discuss those.

But I trust the guys have been doing this long enough they know what the audience wants. And they give it to them. Hard.

  14. Yeah I agree they’re still a fun listen for sure, just thinking it might be cool to change it up a bit as well. So far it’s been all action movies, and it sounds like it won’t change from what we’ve heard of the planning, but if there’s some slots in there that needs filling down the line, I think doing one that isn’t an action movie would be worth the shot.

  15. The whole go between them/don’t go between them is the best. You’re wrong Frank. So wrong.

  16. @Henrik and milath: The next one is going to be a horror franchise, so that’s something different. If you have something else specific in mind, let us know and we’ll definitely consider it!

  17. I’m down for the horror franchise. Looking forward to it, in fact!

My ‘idea’ is unspecific and like I said one which you guys have already done with the X-mas bonus ep. I thought that was probably one of the most interesting premium eps you guys have had simply because it was like you were ‘defending’ your picks to some extent. If that makes any sense…

Specifically? I’d love to hear something like say, a… Sam Raimi (minus Spiderman) special, or a Fincher special or OOOH! A special involving only movies that share their names with meat products (Hot Dog, Meatballs, etc.).

I’ll listen either way. It’s still fun reliving my own excitement while you guys discuss the franchise action movies too! Whatever works for you guys really. I’m just here to listen and make sarcastic comments from the peanut gallery. :P

  18. Sean, Due to Greg’s new found love for Disney, Frank’s undying love for Disney, and Jay’s hatred of Roy Disney – I think it’s obvious what you gotta do at some point. Could be amazing.

  19. Best Wilhelm Scream I’ve ever heard. Also, can we get #smugcunt to trend?

  20. Oh hells yeah! Double digits folks, I’m talking about the big number 10th premium podcast. Crack the whip. I totally agree man #8, Kasper, one of the best so far. A bold statement considering all the others are all killer, no filler. My man Frank was on fire baby for this show! Worth the price of admission alone just to hear the Jackal and the KOC harmonizing the soundtrack score. This one has it all, Grail Diary love, rubbing and scrubbing, fake bookshelves, Doody free, petroleum jelly, and smug blondes ripping off elephant trunks! I’m giddy as a schoolboy.

  21. I’m good for a fiver. Looking forward to turning down the lights, lighting some candles, opening a bottle of Jesus juice, and popping all over this shit. Cheers…

  22. Great show!

As for the zombie podcast, Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead remake might be a good candidate too? Although Return of the Living Dead is definitely the best of the Romero-influenced pseudo-sequels/remakes.

  23. Hey guys, I’m pretty sure it’s not necessary to post the amount you donated in here for it to go through. It’s all handled by Paypal.

    - csidle, $1,000,000.00

  24. Spot on Csidle.

Anyway I’m in for my usual 200. Cents that is.

  25. Listened sat night, for me this is the best cast so far among the premiums.
It sounded like you guys had a good time doing it. Sean sounded like he had a few drinks in him. Either way he was a bit loose and it was great stuff.
We all know Sean’s married, but it always cracks me up when he gushes over the handsome dudes ie Harrison Ford.
Jay and Frank, you two completely failing on the score harmonies had me in stitches at work.
Greg, always love your laugh in the background man.
Frank, the Lawrence Kasdan question/ultimatum to Sean was fucking hilarious.

Was worth every penny, thanks again for the entertainment gents.

  26. #25

Agreed, one of the best of the premium casts so far. It sounded like a lot of fun to make.
    Thanks guys!

  27. csidle (#23): I know some do it to encourage others to pay more. Since you’ve posted $1M we no longer have to pay for these podcasts. The guys can do them for free. Thank you csidle!

  28. This entire podcast and every penny I paid was worth it just for Jay’s ‘Wilhelm scream’. That was so perfect and awesomely hilarious, as the Brits say, spot on!

I won’t lie. I replayed it several times. So funny.

  29. Well, I have not listened to all premium shows but I listened to most, and this may be the best so far. Like an Indiana Jones movie, it was a rollercoaster ride full of thrills and laughs aplenty. Frank was simply on fire with the legless lizards and the grasshoppers. I was in stitches. The songs, the screams, the Indian children (including Steve), and Frank’s neat-picking reaching new surreal heights. It was all great.

    A few notes:

    – Steven Spielberg to this day refers to all Indiana Jones movies as Raiders. Raiders 1, Raiders 2 etc…

    - The most crucial thing about the Indiana Jones character: He is so endearing because most of the time he has no idea what he’s doing. He’s improvising left and right, and many times need to count on others for help (the tank chase in Crusade, Short Round fighting the tranced kid in Temple Of Doom) So for that reason it didn’t bother me that in Crystal Skull Mutt was fencing the villain while Indie was driving.

    - The ending to Raiders defies every screenwriting “rule” taught in film school. The hero is incapacitated and passive throughout, being saved by… god. That didn’t stop it from becoming one of the most well-known and classic endings ever in the history of cinema.

    - I didn’t get the Lawrence Kasdan running joke.

    - Nobody except Sean putting “Indie shoots guy with sword” in their top 5? Sheesh…
