Film Junk Poll: Who is the Best New Horror Director of the Past Decade?

With all the horror anthology films coming out as of late, it’s pretty clear that there is no shortage of bold up-and-coming filmmakers out there looking to leave an impression on genre fans. This got me thinking about a changing of the guard, so to speak… with masters like George Romero and John Carpenter on the decline, who will step up and ultimately take their place? Clearly there are plenty of directors that have already made their mark over the past decade, including various members of the so-called “Splat Pack”. But which one is the most talented? I limited the poll to directors who have already done multiple films, but feel free to discuss more recent emerging talent as well. Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then get arguing in the comments below!

Is it just me, or does Eli Roth look like Jason Schwartzman’s evil twin?

  • El HipsterDbag

In my opinion, horror films that appeal to me are made by auteur directors that are not primarily “horror fanboys.” Some examples include, Let the Right One In, Jaws, The Shining, The Orphanage, and Dumplings.

I need to see what Roth actually directs next. He did “Cabin Fever”, which was hot garbage, then “Hostel”, followed by “Hostel 2″, which showed that maybe the appeal of “Hostel” (which was in a way riding on the coattails of “Saw”) was a tad overestimated, and he’s been pretty quiet on the directorial front ever since. Maybe if he actually follows through on one the dozens of projects he’s been attached to I might like him as a director more. He seems to be running out of good will. I think I’m a little bitter that the new show he’s producing (“Hemlock Grove”) was supposed to film around here, but at the last minute, they fled up north to (no offense) fuckin’ Canada because it was cheaper. The bastards…

Tough choice between Aja and West for me, I went with West because I think his career has some legs. Eli Roth’s Hostel was great but I’m not impressed with how many projects he seems to have his hands in, he seems more like a horror film “personality” than anything else.

  • Justice

I love Aja and West has a great future, but I think it really belongs to Neil Marshall. He did the best horror film of the last decade with The Descent and one of the best werewolf movies ever with Dog Soldiers. Add in the mashup Doomsday and he takes the cake.

  • Darksiders

I think Aja takes the cake just with the first hour of High Tension alone. That was one of the scariest tension building scenes I’ve seen in a long time.

Definitely not Eli Roth….he wishes but it’s just really not him.

Why the hell is Oren Peli on this list? He’s directed two films and one of them has been unreleased for years. He’s a brand name, not a director.

  • http://popshifter.com Less Lee Moore

Julien Maury & Alexandre Bustillo, no contest.
