Movie Poster Round-Up: Oz: The Great and Powerful, Taken 2, Dredd

With The Amazing Spider-Man hitting theatres this week, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Disney has just unveiled the very first poster for Oz: The Great and Powerful, their upcoming Wizard of Oz prequel that will also be Sam Raimi’s first film since 2009′s Drag Me to Hell. It hints at something very epic and fantastical, and potentially a very different kind of movie for him. Some of the other big posters recently been released online include a pair of one-sheets for Taken 2, James Patterson’s Alex Cross, a teaser poster for the new Paddington Bear movie and the first two posters for Dredd.

As always, some of the more interesting poster designs tend to come from the smaller indie releases like the horror anthology film V/H/S, Robot & Frank and Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer, although my personal favourite is probably RZA’s The Man with the Iron Fists. We also have a group of six one-sheets for The Campaign starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis and a cool U.K. quad for Rian Johnson’s Looper. What do you think, are any of these new posters wall-worthy? Check out the full gallery after the jump and give us your thoughts in the comments below.

Prometheus has without doubt the best poster, reminding me alot of vintage sci-fi posters (2001, Alien, etc.). It’s a shame the film didn’t deliver on any other parts than the visuals, the part Scott (although he must also be blamed for accepting the bad script) himself had full control over. It therefore comes as no suprise that the best parts were the ones that were purely visual (the opening credits, the operation scene, Fassbender’s look at the alien ship’s navigation map, and so on).

The rest (that means the posters, not the film that i went off rails with) is pretty mediocre. I guess the Oz-poster is alright, though it kinda resembles those Wallpaper-art that you find on sites like DeviantArt.

This Oz prequel wasn’t really on my radar at all, but that poster is awesome. Definitely interested now.

The Prometheus one is nice. The Oz one is all kinds of fantastic. The Campaign ones are far from art, but they get the job done.

The quality on DeviantArt ranges from laughably bad to jaw-on-the-floor good, don’t you agree? But maybe you weren’t being sly about the quality of the Oz poster, but about it’s originality. Predictable as it may be in its elements (yellow brick road, Emerald City, balloon), it makes up for it with its composition, lighting and color.

Does anyone but me read “Studio Anal” on the Paddington poster?

I agree with you about DeviantArt’s huge range of diversity. And I didn’t compare the Oz poster with DeviantArt in a bad manner, I was only pointing out how familiar it looked. It’s still an obvious nr.2, after the Prometheus poster, in the bunch. I would rather see more of that kind of posters than the ones we are used to. Personally, I have lost taste for all photographic posters, which has dominated since the 1990′s. You never see posters like these anymore:

Agreed, those are fantastic posters. The skilled artists are still out there, but studios seem to think actors faces are the only things that get butts in seats.

The trend has unfortunately been in multiple mediums. I remarked to a friend of mine once that book covers are increasingly not illustrated, but graphic designed.
