Film Junk Premium Podcast: Spider-Man Trilogy + Darkman

Just in time for the release of The Amazing Spider-Man, we’ve decided to go back and revisit Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy to see how well it holds up. We also used it as an excuse to throw in an extra discussion about what is arguably Raimi’s very first superhero film, Darkman. Topics addressed during this special podcast include Tobey Maguire’s bulging eyes, Macho King vs. Macho Man and the much-maligned emo Spidey not to mention the (apparently) divisive opening credits and conspiracy theories about 9/11 propaganda. Is Spider-Man 2 still the best superhero movie ever made? Is Spider-Man 3 still one of the worst? What really constitutes a cameo, anyway? Download and dig on this.

It’s not a problem Dan. We are giving it away for free for a reason. It should be guilt-free as well.

  • BubbleDubble

Listening now…excited to hear what you guys say.

As for myself, I still think Spiderman 2 is simply a great film, a great piece of entertainment, regardless of accuracy to the comic, as a film its great. Especially the editing and the camera work. Doc Ock was amazingly handled as well. The train sequence, especially spidey stopping the train is truly awesomely handled.

    Just my two cents.

    thanks Sean!

Me and my friend actually have a huge joke about the museum scene, specifically the photo taking part, and more specifically the part where MJ points to whatever paper she has in her hands. In fact, I recently made a gif of this amazing part, this may clear up Frank and Jay’s disagreement.

I’m still shocked (SHOCKED!) that while Frank is completely hung up on the change in aspect ratio from Spidey 1 to 2, there was never any mention of the same thing happening with the Avengers! Also, in that case, it was a backwards move!

  • calvin

This is titled “the Amazing Spider-Man” in the podcast feed. Might want to change that as it’s a bit confusing.

I’m loving the bonus podcasts though, keep ‘em coming!

I don’t see a link to this on the band camp site and when I click the “download it” like it just opens up a new window and starts to play it in Quicktime. How do I download this? I am jonesing for it. My internet skill limitations are revealed…

Thanks, Sean. That’s why you’re the judge and I am the law… talking… guy.

  • Dan Squires

    Aww, Thanks Sean. ;)

Thanks for this! I was surprised to see so many comic book movies on the Filmjunk guys ‘favorite movies’ lists, compiled maybe one year ago. Perhaps 4 or 5 of the 10 favorites were Spiderman/Dark Knight/Superman films.

Looking forward to an Action flick examination/exhumation:

    80s: Blade Runner/Conan/The Thing/Highlander
    90s: Starship Troopers/Riddick/Fortress series

Maybe a ChevyFest on the comedy front

  • Alobar

Thanks for the freebie…much appreciated, guys…

Another great bonus episode, guys. I don’t re-listen to many podcasts, but those bonus ones have so many great moments. Glad to hear you guys finally gave Spider-man 3 what it deserved. Oh, and Jay’s take on Danny Elfman’s Darkman score was hilariously dead-on. Can’t wait for Batman!

  • Henrik

Sometimes Jay really needs to open his eyes when the movie is on, and not just assume it reenacts his expectations… Not enough time from Peter Parker in the beginning to being confident Spider-Man????????????? Did you see him bumbling around in his homemade suit? How much amateur Spider-Man does a movie need to satisfy you? Only 10 minutes in, but couldn’t stand that shit, I AM PISSED OFF

  • Indianamcclain

Sorry to hear you guys have turned around on Spider-Man 3.

  • Henrik

Having listened, I appreciate that this was free, but as a major Spider-Man fan, I’ve never (for me this actually means something) screamed “You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me” or “You guys are fucking kidding me?” at the speakers so many times!

Seriously, you guys are fucking kidding me… There’s so many things I take issue with, it’s impossible to do in writing.

  • Kasper

Loved the podcast, thanks for the freebie.

I just came back from the “amazing Spiderman” …not that Amazing guys,

You would thought that Studios would try repeat the recipe of the Second film since that was the most successful, …you know spent more time introducing and exploring the villain and less time with the same old annoying teenagers. but for reasons yet to be known they do the exact opposite.

The lizard stuff in the the film were just BRILLIANT. I wish they spent more time exploring that character properly and telling his story from the beginning. I would prefer spending the first half of the film that we don’t see spiderman anyway in IRAQ and see idealist soldiers get amputated instead of watching …30year olds pretending to be teenagers in high-school.. (revolting).

It’s not just shit. It’s forcing you to microwave that turd and then eat it one more time. Not a fan of that. Also the 3D ….it doesn’t exist. it’s a scam.
Prometheus regenerated my faith in 3D – it was AMAZING- but this pile of shit buried it completely. What a rip-off.

It’s a shame because the spiderman universe has so much into it… yet they choose to focus into the most retarded part of that universe.

    I feel insulted.

Also, what is up with people farting in the Theatre?

    seriously guys, cut it off.

  • patrik

I’ll pay for the higher quality one when it’s out.

“The Landlords Daughter: Would You Like Some Chocolate Cake”

That would be an awesome movie..

  • Duck Johnson

Great podcast as always, guys, but I’d like to add Joy ‘Woman at Web’ Bryant to the list of Spidey 2 cameos. “Go, Spidey, Go!”

  • Duck Johnson

Oh, and Donnell ‘Ashy Larry’ Rawlings too.

  • el ohroy

Thanks for the bonus, you guys! And special shout out to Greg for mentioning Spider-Man on the Electric Company! Childhood memories…
