First Official Photo of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone Ranger

Well, after a long series of starts and stops due to budgetary concerns, it looks like Disney’s The Lone Ranger is finally underway, and this week we have the very first image to prove it. Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Armie Hammer in the title role with Johnny Depp as Tonto, the movie obviously looks like it is going to be modeled after The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Johnny Depp’s costume in particular looks quite similar to Captain Jack Sparrow.
This photo was sent out by producer Jerry Bruckheimer via his Twitter account this morning. What do you think, does it look better or worse than you expected? The Lone Ranger also stars Helena Bonham Carter, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson and Barry Pepper, and it hits theatres on May 31st, 2013. Check out a slightly bigger version of the image after the jump and sound off in the comments below!

Get ready for the backlash, here comes all the white people standing up for the Native Americans.
Posted by Brittany on March 8th, 2012Isn’t Johnny Depp himself Native American? He gives off that vibe to me.
Posted by Drew on March 8th, 2012Yes, he is part Cherokee, and I’m sure Disney will do everything they can to make sure everyone knows that.
Posted by Sean on March 8th, 2012He has Native American blood, yes. It should be fine.
Posted by Greg on March 8th, 2012This looks bad! and I agree with your Captain Jack Sparrow comment.
Posted by Big Hungry on March 8th, 2012Looks great, can’t wait. Don’t care if he’s indian enough or not.
Posted by Kasper on March 8th, 2012I actually like the look, and they put together a pretty great cast. The only question is Armie Hammer, he was really good in Social Network but kind of sucked in J.Edgar. This could be the tie breaker.
Posted by Gomez on March 8th, 2012Is it just me or does it look really silly to anyone else? Like a sort of halloween costume party scene out of a comedy.
Posted by JFGinDigital3D on March 8th, 2012I know everyone goes gaga over any Johnny Depp performance, but has he done anything in the last 12 years where he’s not dressed like a pantomime character? The “Tourist” I suppose…but no one saw that?
Posted by James on March 8th, 2012Gee I am not sure what to make of it…I’m kind of speechless…and I’m not sure if that is bad or good.
Posted by 1138sw on March 9th, 2012i wish this was a teaser for a second fear and loathing film
Posted by rob on March 9th, 2012johnny depp looks really confused
cant figure if this looks good or bad
Black Metal Tonto!
Posted by swarez on March 9th, 2012It’s kinda shitty that they CHOSE not to find an actual Native American actor to play Tonto in this movie. Out of all the Native American actors on the planet, they just had ta use a German/Irish actor
(with SOME Native American ancestry). Next thing you know…. they’ll end up using Depp to play
President Obama. (they probably would too) Don’t get me wrong…Depp’s a hell of an actor, but looking at him in this pic, as Tonto with, his war paint just feels wrong…. like
“BLACK FACE” wrong. I’m not even full blown Native American, and I feel somewhat offended.
Jerry Bruckheimer should have looked into some of the Native actors from Cowboys & Aliens or Apocolypto, for cryin out loud. Raoul Trujillo would have been perfect for the role. He looks more like Jay Silverheels; but instead they went with “this” fuckin guy. I don’t give a damn how well known of an actor Depp is. I pray this film comes out around the same time as Tarantino’s Django Unchained, just so the Ranger can tank; but don’t think I’ll be that lucky. This is a bunch Bullshit…..O.K. I’m done.
Posted by Derek McFarland on March 9th, 2012This is the same argument we hear every time, but right or wrong, this movie is only financially viable with Johnny Depp involved. Do you really think a talented but unknown Native American actor could headline a $215 million Disney blockbuster?
Posted by Sean on March 9th, 2012LOL, only financially viable? I guess that’s why
Pirates: On Stranger Tides, did “so well”. Depp can headline a Disney Blockbuster, but that doesn’t make a movie good.
To be honest, I don’t think a talented unknown Native American actor could headline a pricey Disney blockbuster. But is having someone who’s mostly of Caucasian descent, playing an “Indian” for headlines, worth offending the Native Americans who watch this Disney film? In most of Jay Silverheel’s earlier films, he was uncredited in the roles he played; and became “well known”, as Tonto in the T.V. shows. So using Depp just for headlines is an excuse or a front for how terrible I hope this movie will be. I’m not mad at Depp though. Disney pulled the same shit with Gyllenhaal playing a freakin Persian; not so long ago. They could have taken a chance with a talented unknown Native American actor like Raoul Trujillo, so he could finally shine; instead of making Depp, a Native American version of Sambo, in a Disney film. I’m not arguing….just giving my thoughts
Posted by Derek McFarland on March 9th, 2012Erm.. not because I disagree with you Derek, but On Stranger Tides made over a billion worldwide and near 250m domestically. So.. yeah. And critical praise has little to do with box office success as shown time and again. Sean has a point.
Posted by milath on March 10th, 2012I’m aware that Pirates: On Stranger Tides made lots of money worldwide.
But was it because the movie was so good?…or was it because LOTS of people wanted to see a first time 3D Pirates film?…
And I know 3D movie tickets ain’t cheap.
(but the script sure was). I’m more than sure the majority of the audiences were somewhat frustrated at the extra (3D) money they spent on that lame ass movie, as they exited the theaters.
I know that making movies is a business. It’s all about the dollars. Lately Hollywood is not known for taking chances. They’ve lost there nuts and want a “safe” and sure thing. If something works, they repeat the formula over and over, again and again until it’s completely drained. That’s also why there’s so much bullshit in the theaters these days….for example… On Stranger Tides.
(but that’s another story.)
Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Johnny Depp will bring in more dollars than unknowns like Raoul Trujillo. I think Johnny’s a fabulous big time Hollywood actor. But yes, they could’ve found a wonderfully talented actor of true Native American ancestry to play Tonto, like they did with Jay Silverheels, in the original Lone Ranger…but did they even make an effort to do so? I doubt it.
And my question still stands with out an answer…
Is having someone who’s mostly of Caucasian descent, playing an “Indian” for headlines, worth offending Native Americans who watch this Disney film?
Johnny Depp playing Jack Sparrow is not the same as
Johnny Depp “playing” a Native American…
I mean Tonto.
My issue isn’t with how headlines can hype up big budget films… it’s with making films that can be offensive to certain races. If you were mostly of Native American descent you’d probably see the point I’m trying to make.
As I stated before, I’m just giving my thoughts.
Posted by Derek McFarland on March 12th, 2012For God’s sake please drop the “not fully native” slant. If the Native American people werent offended enough that the character representing them is named Tanto then they shouldnt be offened at all. Tell you what, since you are SO offeneded, you should sue them and get payed for pain and suffering. If using someone who is part Native American is offensive to you then you must not like Matt Damon playing an Irish guy, or Russell Crowe playing a roman, or even Hugh Jackman playing an American. Try again.
