New to Theatres This Weekend: Safe House, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 3D

Looks like we’ve got more middle-of-the-road mediocrity in theatres this weekend as the Denzel Washington / Ryan Reynolds thriller Safe House has been getting uninspired reviews along with the sequel that no one really asked for, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which replaces Brendan Fraser with The Rock. It also wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without a Channing Tatum romance in theatres, which is where The Vow comes into play (This Means War also has sneak previews everywhere on Valentine’s Day itself), but perhaps the biggest release of the week is the return of a much maligned Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 3D. Will fans go to see a movie they hate just because it has some cool new visuals? We’ll find out soon enough. Fortunately there are a few alternatives in select theatres including Oren Moverman’s Rampart starring Woody Harrelson and the Oscar-nominated animated film Chico & Rita. What will you be watching this weekend?

Rampart was underwhelming. A big disappointment.
Posted by Kasper on February 10th, 2012Might check out Journey 2. The first one was fun shit (and I saw it on DVD), and this one looks like it’ll be more of the same. And Vanessa Hudgens may be a bad actor, but she’s still smoking hot.
