Film Junk Premium Podcast: Star Wars – The Original Trilogy

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, we saw Star Wars for the very first time. Of course, we’re a lot older and a little bit wiser now, but do these films still live up to the memories in our head? In this second part of our Star Wars special, we revisit the Original Trilogy, the canon upon which Lucas built an empire. There’s a lot to love here, but still a few nits to pick… especially when it comes to the various alterations that Lucas has made over the years. Rewatch episodes 4 through 6 and join us for a journey back to 1977, or whenever it was you first saw these movies.
Once again, this is another premium episode intended to help support the regular weekly Film Junk Podcast. Head on over to Bandcamp and download the full episode now for a minimum donation of just 99 cents. As always, let us know if you experience any technical difficulties or if you have any other suggestions for future specials. The next premium podcast that we have planned will cover the Jurassic Park trilogy.

I think you should have a bonus video of Greg recreating the Han Solo charging the stormtroopers scene with his action figures.
Posted by Nat Almirall on November 18th, 2011Why does everyone keep saying that the original (non-special editions) films are not available? The original, theatrical releases can be bought on DVD. They come with the two disc sets released a few years ago.
Posted by El Ultimo Hombre on November 18th, 2011@ Nat WTF!! is that this weekend FFFFFFUUUUUUCCCCKKKKK!!! GOING OUT OF TOWN…

Posted by Gord on November 18th, 2011Nice!! Looking forward to the Jurassic Park one. Will this be purely a franchise kinda thing or could there be director specials? Like a Tarantino special or Danny Boyle special..
Posted by patrik on November 18th, 2011But I’m going on a trip in like 5 minutes. So I want to download it, regardless of the audio problem.
Posted by David Dean on November 18th, 2011All of the audio issues should now be resolved. DOWNLOAD AWAY AND MAY THE SCHWARTZ BE WITH YOU.
Posted by Jay C. on November 18th, 2011I wish this shit didn’t have to ask me for 2 passwords and tons of stupid info to let me download. I wanna send SEAN DWYER dollars to get this shit, because I think it’s cool. I hate the other websites!
Glad it’s up so soon. Good job Jay-son, and good luck with the money paying for the Sean-son. I paid a shit-ton (2 american dollars).
Posted by Henrik on November 18th, 2011Also, for those who downloaded before the audio was updated, you should be able to re-download the fixed chapters (part 1 and 2).

Posted by Kasper on November 19th, 2011Awesome podcast, thanks Film Junkers.
Looking forward to Jurassic Park trilogy.
Posted by KJ on November 19th, 2011I don’t know if there’s a Jurassic Park expert lined up for the next Bonus Episode, but I’d like to hear Dax back on the show. He says some funny stuff.
Posted by Film Ape on November 19th, 2011nice! Will download asap!
Posted by Niklas on November 19th, 2011@Rus I’m trying to go at the 4:30 show today (and then again Monday night). But if you ever want to get a Chicago FilmJunk meetup going, drop me a line! I think the guys who do the Director’s Club podcast live here as well. It’d be cool to get some people together, see a flick, and do a little podcast of our own. Maybe the Indiana Jones Quadrilogy…
Posted by Nat Almirall on November 19th, 2011A great show, finished it in one go, it was that good. Although towards the end it was obvious you guys were getting a little tired and not-as-focused. I’m even more impressed now that you went and recorded another show right after this one. No small feat.
Just a few comments:
- For me Star Wars will always be Star Wars and never A New Hope. Those were added later and are not original. The whole “episode 4, 5, 6″ thing picked up only much later. For years, despite the changed opening crawls, the films were known as Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, no “episode” crap.
- In Empire Of Dreams, Lucas says that in 1977 he could only make the first half of the story he has written. The rest later became ESB. So it is possible he knew about stuff like Luke’s dad and Luke and Leia in advance, although his original story may have been different. Just watch Empire Of Dreams, it’s awesome.
- How come Dax did not know about the ROTJ changes? Was he living under a rock? Anyway, it was priceless, and a little cruel.
- Frank’s opening crawl comparison was just fantastic. His love of Star Wars is a beautiful thing.
That is all.
Posted by Lior on November 19th, 2011Yeah! I’m not the only late bloomer when it comes to the original three. YOU AND ME, FRANK.
Posted by Falsk on November 19th, 2011FUCK YOU RUS
Good episode, but it got derailed quite abit… I mean the music is pretty good, but why?
I enjoyed the prequels one more, but it could just be because I enjoy those movies more.
Posted by Henrik on November 20th, 2011Thank God this time nobody mentioned how much they donated! ^^
Posted by Stefan on November 20th, 2011That means everyone gave .99c
Posted by kyri on November 20th, 2011thanks filmjunk – I fukn love you guys in a natural way
Posted by Lucas on November 20th, 2011Quality show gents. Was nice reliving the original trilogy; I re-watched the Blus recently. Jedi was the only one of the original, untouched films, I saw in the theatre. My cousin took me when I was visiting in Hamilton and I’ve always had a soft spot for that movie because of that. Of course after all is said and done I still think Empire is the best, but Jedi will always hold a special place with me.
Looking forward to the Jurassic Park pod. I bought the steelbook this weekend in anticipation. These will be a first time watch for me, so pretty excited. Somehow managed to miss the entire trilogy when I was a kid.
Posted by KeithTalent on November 20th, 2011I, of course, loved the show. However, I downloaded the podcast before the audio problem was fixed and see no way to re-download the updated version without paying again. I don’t have a Bandcamp account, if that matters. I just click the purchase button, type in my donation and proceed without logging in to anything other than Paypal. My plan is to just re-buy the show for an additional $0.99 because I don’t have a problem throwing more money your guys’ way, but if there is a way to re-download shows you’ve already purchased without completing another transaction, could someone enlighten those of us unaware of the process?
Posted by Rian on November 21st, 2011#35 Log into your email-account and use the re-download link from Bandcamp that you should’ve received in an email.
Posted by Kasper on November 21st, 2011Would of donated more if you had a reaction vid of Dax listening/watching the Nooo! scene. Loved the podcast, Chapter 4 was awesome.
Posted by Primal on November 21st, 2011Fellas, thank you. $5 coming your way.
Also, please think about doing a Godfather Trilogy special, as well as a Coen Brothers Collection (Big Lebowski, O Brother and Miller’s Crossing maybe).
Posted by mushroomyakuza on November 21st, 2011Have just bought this, listened to the first one this afternoon and was laughing out loud at work. Keep the extras coming, I am definitely going to buy.
Posted by rot on November 21st, 2011Finally finished and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Is the idea to release on a monthly basis? If so, I’ll probably increase my donation.
If I can be ‘critical’, I personally prefer things when you guys have an easy target to ridicule, as in the prequels podcast. It just results in more humour, whereas straight film analysis can sometimes become a little dry.
The Jurassic Park trilogy should provide ample opportunity for both. Can’t wait.
Posted by Scab on November 21st, 2011Another great show, guys! There’s quite a bit of material to cover with these films and I thought you did a good job highlighting important aspects.
I’m looking forward to the Jurassic Park show for sure. Just bought the new Blu set, so I’ll try to make my way through them before the show gets released. Will Dax be coming back again? He’s a nice addition to the group.
Posted by Aaron on November 21st, 2011Paid my 10$. Keep it coming guys. Would love for u to revisit all the trilogies that we hold dear.
Posted by Jay on November 22nd, 2011Thanks for downloading everyone.
Scab: Yes, we’re going to try to do one every month. I agree that sometimes it’s more fun to make fun of bad movies, but I think we’ll try to maintain a balance with these specials.
Film Ape and Aaron: Dax won’t be back for the Jurassic Park one but I’m sure we’ll have him on either Film Junk or Game Junk again at some point.
Posted by Sean on November 22nd, 2011Henrik, did you just write that you prefer the prequels to the original trilogy?!! You gotta be kidding me.
Great show guys. Looking forward to the next one.
Posted by dan day on November 22nd, 2011I think so, but after listening to this I have been wanting to check out the originals again to see wether or not they hold up. These guys made them sound pretty good!
Posted by Henrik on November 22nd, 2011After reading Henrik’s preference for the prequels, I’d like to request the ability to block certain user’s comments!
Posted by Scab on November 22nd, 2011Those glasses aren’t with shit. I just sold a bunch of them on Ebay for practically nothing. I had the whole set from episode 4 and 5 and a couple from Jedi.
Thanks for the episode guys!
Posted by Andrew James on November 22nd, 2011Andrew, you should’ve hit up James! He was loving those things in Pepin.
Posted by Jay C. on November 22nd, 2011I just realised Sofia Coppola is in Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace..
Posted by patrik on November 23rd, 2011$20 coming your way. Thanks, guys!
Posted by Bob Bobson on November 23rd, 2011Where are the originals with the dodgy audio? I know you have the tech now to release them as you originally envisioned but I thinks it’s wrong to deprive us of the first release
Posted by Jonathan on November 23rd, 2011Guys, I just wanted to say that I enoyed it immenseley, but a large part of that was due to Dax. Being a fanboy on almost the same level as Dax, I often found myself agreeing with a lot of what he said more than the rest of you.
I don’t know how into film Dax is, but if ever you guys wanted a fifth member to add to the podcast, I think you’ve found your man. Big thank you to you guys, and especially to Dax.
Posted by mushroomyakuza on November 23rd, 2011The Kraayt Dragon “scream” in the Blu-ray releases is almost unbearable. Unforgivable. I literally cover my ears when it happens and remember the correct sound in my head. I get that I’m more of a fanboy than others but this change REALLY pissed me off. Not only does it sound terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE. it’s one of the goofiest, most irritating and cheap sound effect I’ve ever heard – I fucking HATE it!), but it’s more a question of WHY? Why was this change necessary? You guys glanced over it but I still can’t figure it out. Does Lucas honestly think this sounds better? Does he imagine that this really makes his movie that much more entertaining? I honestly, honestly think he did it just to have something to work on. To tinker with something just for the sake of tinkering. I actually think Frank may not be that far off about Lucas actually enjoying fucking with his fans. I think it’s highly likely he did it just to be an asshole.
If I could interview anybody in history, alive or dead, and inject them truth serum, I want 15 minutes with George fucking Lucas.
Posted by Andrew James on November 23rd, 2011Jay – I sold them about 2 weeks before we went to Pepin. Alas. I also offered up to James to skim through my DVD collection and see if there was anything he wanted to grab. He never took me up on it and now those are gone too. Alas.
Posted by Andrew James on November 23rd, 2011I don’t completely disagree with you guys about Empire being the best looking of the trilogy in terms of cinematography, but don’t discount ep. IV so quickly. It’s pretty fucking awesome. Check out the scene on the Death Star when the Imperials are having a board meeting or whatever. The lighting and art direction in that room is super cool. Or the washed out, almost blinding white light in Tantive IV (that’s the rebel ship in the beginning – it was designed by the CEC). How about the lighting in the canyons of Tatooine or inside the Sand Crawler? Also inside the Great Temple on Yavin 4. It’s all pretty amazing.
Though I love the green/blue color scheme of Jedi, in retrospect the washed out grays and browns in episode IV is awesome and still my favorite movie of the entire saga.
That is all….
for now.
Posted by Andrew James on November 23rd, 2011Nice! Krull is available on NETFLIX INSTANT. Will be watching that today instead of working. *switching phone to automatic voice mail*
Posted by Andrew James on November 23rd, 2011I just saw on Facebook, that Frank has rated Jurassic Park 4,5 / 5.. What´s up with that? If there ever was a 5 / 5.. The score alone is worth a five.
Posted by patrik on November 23rd, 2011You guys are killing me. You need a REAL Star Wars fanboy on this episode. The black “blotches” are called the Emperor’s slugs. Google it bitch.
Also, on the closing Ewok song, there is no “English” version. The song you were listening to IS the English version, you jut cut it off too soon. It transitions into English at the end. You’re right in that the words are “celebrate the love.”
Normally Jay would be right about the squishing of the binoculars scene being due to widescreen shots trying to be placed on 4:3 screens. But in this case, not so. The images simply appear distorted through those lenses. Go back and watch all versions and they all look the same. More evidence would that if you’re watching the movies in full screen mode (as I did many many times as a kid), when Luke looks through his binoculars (they’re actually called macrobinoculars) when searching for Sand People he says, “wait a minute. There’s Sand People alright, I can see one of them now.” But in the full frame version I never understood why we couldn’t see them. It’s because the widescreen image is cut off in the full frame version (NOT squished). IF you watch the widescreen version, you can see a Tusken Raider clear as day enter the frame.
There were a ton more inaccuracies and flat out wrong thing you guys mentioned I just can’t remember them all now that I’m home.
PS – I had a record storybook of Jedi when I was a kid. In that version Han says, “it’s alright I can see a lot better.” That always weirded me out as a kid because it wasn’t the words that were in the film (“It’s alright, trust me” is correct). So when I heard the new lines uttered in the special edition for the first time I remember thinking holy shit, that’s from that record I had when I was a kid.
I’ll be back…
Posted by Andrew James on November 23rd, 2011Episode IV is my favorite too.
Posted by Kasper on November 23rd, 2011Andrew: I think we just got owned. You know, I guess we could have spent another month researching the episode, but we prefer to fly by the seat of our pants.
Posted by Sean on November 24th, 2011Awesome episode though guys. Got me to work and back twice with major entertainment.
Cheers to all of you.
Posted by Andrew James on November 24th, 2011I rewatched episode V and VI, and I agree with Jay that Empire looks way better.
All the spacefight shit is awesome in both movies. I love the choreography and with the special edition effects, everything looks pretty fucking good. I could look at establishing shots of ships with the Imperial March in the background for hours and hours, and everything concerning the empire and Darth Vader in general is really good.
I think that the character of Darth Vader is more interesting after having seen the prequels. I don’t understand why people think he has been ruined, I think all of his dialogue becomes a lot more interesting and open to interpretation after you picture little Ani behind that suit. I like that, quite abit.
Han Solo makes much of the stuff watchable, and the music is absolutely excellent, and each movies has excellent new tracks. The spacefight track at the end of Jedi and the march are my favorites.
Good movies, could have had more lightsabers though… I’m glad the prequels deliver so much lightsaber action.
Posted by Henrik on December 10th, 2011I’m a bit late to the party, but I loved it!
I was a big Star Wars fan but lost the love when the prequels came and sucked. Had to let it rest for a while, now I can ignore the prequels and enjoy the originals again, although they’re more ‘cg’ now than ‘film’, twisted and evil
FYI – Old Vader was played by Sebastian Shaw
