Arrested Development to Return for a Final Season?

It’s been over five years now since Fox decided to pull the plug on Arrested Development, and almost as long since we’ve started hearing rumours about an Arrested Development movie. Most of the show’s former cast members still can’t get through an interview without being asked about it, and although series creator Mitch Hurwitz supposedly wrote a script for it, he’s been keeping busy with plenty of other new projects (as have all of the show’s stars). But just when it looked like everyone had completely given up on a comeback for AD, along comes an intriguing update. At a panel at The New Yorker Festival on the weekend, Hurwitz revealed that he is planning to bring the show back for a shortened final season that will lead into the feature film. Apparently he’s not just blowing smoke either… all of the cast members were in attendance (yes, even Michael Cera), and Jason Bateman later confirmed the plans via Twitter:

“It’s true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie. Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early ‘13. VERY excited!”

But how can they possibly bring this all-star cast back together for a final season when they are all busy with movie careers and new TV shows? Hurwitz has come up with an interesting solution: each episode will focus on a different member of the Bluth family, eliminating the need for every actor to appear in all 10 episodes. While that may not be the proper send-off that fans were hoping for, the idea is that they will all come together for the feature film afterward.

It’s unclear whether or not the show will return on FOX, but Deadline is reporting that both Showtime and Netflix (who, as we previously reported, are getting into the original content game) are in talks to pick up the show. Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment is still expected to produce, but either way, it seems like this is really happening. Are you excited for the return of Arrested Development? Is this final season a good idea or will it fail to live up to the previous three?

  1. I’m very excited about this news and I think that doing the short season beforehand to “catch up” on what’s going on with the Bluth’s individually is a great idea. Now we won’t have to wait for a 30 minute (or longer) “recap” in the actual movie. It’s like 9 or 10 tiny prequels to a movie.

  2. NOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCE!!

  3. Holy dicks this is amazing news.

  4. Excited to finally see this happening, slightly sad that not all cast members will appear in each episode.

  5. AWESOME!

  6. The “Arrested Development” movie will be just as successful as the “Serenity” movie was a number of years ago.

  7. I’ll be excited for this when it actually happens. Mitch Hurwitz and even the cast has been “confirming” the movie since 2008, and now without even so much as a script, we’re supposed to believe that we’re getting a new season AND a movie, especially when the show wasn’t a hit show and got cancelled due to low ratings in the first place.

Seriously, I’d love for this to happen, but I don’t want to get too excited if it doesn’t happen.

  8. That’s a pretty genius way to do it.

  9. It’s already been confirmed to start shooting in the summer. If you watch the live event (which is on The New Yorker’s facebook page) they say that the script is mostly done, and that it’s definitely, 100% happening.
