Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire Trailer

The onslaught of new trailers continues from Comic-Con this week as we finally have our first look at Steven Soderbergh’s much anticipated action flick Haywire. Last week we saw the debut trailer for his upcoming virus thriller Contagion, and now this one finds him dipping into the modern spy genre. MMA star Gina Carano (aka Crush from American Gladiators) plays Mallory Kane, a black ops agent who is double crossed by the government and seeks revenge.
It was a little bit worrisome to see the trailer open with Carano sitting across from Channing Tatum, but fortunately the acting talent gradually increases throughout as we also see Michael Douglas, Michael Angarano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Bill Paxton (among others). Make no mistake, Soderbergh is indulging in pure genre here, as there doesn’t seem to be much depth to the film… but I’m okay with that. The action looks exciting and I think Carano has the screen presence required to carry this movie. Haywire hits theatres on January 20th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Posted by mitch on July 23rd, 2011God damn, Soderbergh’s killin’ it as usual! What a cast in this thing! Douglas, Banderas, McGregor and Fassbender?!?! Smart move to back up a first timer with such a solid group of actors. Between this and Contagion it looks like it’s gonna be a great year for Soderbergh fans.
Posted by Fatbologna on July 23rd, 2011Indeed, and a very smart move to use a no-name for the main role..
Posted by kyri on July 23rd, 2011The Bourne Identity with a chick?
But cast and visuals look great. I’ll watch.
Posted by Napalm on July 23rd, 2011This looks like a straight-to-video B-movie. If it wasn’t for Soderbergh’s name on it, no one would be giving this a second look.
Posted by Matt on July 23rd, 2011Matt, you couldn’t be more wrong about anything in your entire life.
Posted by Fatbologna on July 24th, 2011Wow, this actually looks pretty cool! Wasn’t expecting much, but now I’m stoked. Soderbergh is going out with some interesting stuff.
Posted by Bocuma on July 24th, 2011The action sequences looks amazing. I’m hoping it’ll be a fun watch.
Posted by Matt on July 24th, 2011Very nice eye candy beating the stuffing out of some henchmen? I’m in.
Posted by milath on July 24th, 2011yeah, Im really starting to hate high action movies with horrible lighting! I understand Soderbergh is the the king of getting “more out of less” but as a movie fan I can’t get past the fact that in every scene my mind is saying”f*ck, can someone put a key light in this f*ckin room!”
Posted by rus in chicago on July 24th, 2011This looks awesome! Anyone stating otherwise should honestly check himself…
Posted by FoxMulder on July 24th, 2011wow.. its such a weird mix of amazing cast and sort of cheap visual. interesting.
Posted by anton on July 24th, 2011Matt is right, the only reason this is elevated over a standard ‘B’ pic is that Soderbergh is attached. Without him this would have attracted a standard no name cast and be a average movie.
All I could think off was Salt & Bourne while watching the trailer!. Also please how many times do I have to hear wind whoosh while someone throws a punch or kick, this does not happen!!!!!
Posted by Ryan on July 25th, 2011Well, of course it’s elevated because of Soderbergh! I mean, the guy’s done a bunch of pretty decent films, and can really take something like this and turn it into a fun ride. If it was someone like John Turtletaub directing Haywire I probably wouldn’t be interested…
Posted by Bocuma on July 25th, 2011Oh my God, this trailer impressed the hell out of me. Who is this girl? She is awesome. I’m ready to propose based solely on her acting chops and “badassness” alone :p
Posted by Nelson on July 25th, 2011agree with napalm looks alright
Posted by rob on July 28th, 2011Hey I was in the film, great people.
Posted by Emily-Therese. Reynolds on July 30th, 2011This is a joke right?! Soderberg directed film with Douglas, Paxton, McGregor, Fassbender and MMA Chick?! You know how many talented actresses would have given their left nipple to be in a film with that caliber of talent. Just cause she can do a great scissor kick?! Unreal man, I…I’m kinda dumbfounded on this whole idea.
