  1. Damn, I forgot about Crash and Burn! That movie’s…not great.

  2. Awww yeah!

  3. Oh my God, is that the new artwork? It’s fucking awesome haha!

  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5APPgmwoIQ&feature=related

One of the best Coogan lines.Check out Alan Partridge. Classic.

  5. The Music is from the Russian Childrens Story “Peter and the Wolf”. Caught it immediately, it’s pretty big here in Germany.

Great Episode as always, loved it!

  6. Great Job on the new artwork, Corey!

  7. Sven: Thanks a million! It was just last week that I was trying to find the name for the same song.

  8. Did Jay give Reed the John Lasseter drunk slur effect in this episode or was he just drunk??

Nice episode, would of rather you ripped Transformers a bit more.

  9. thanks peoples.

As for the Trip, I like the phone call scenes, I think they contrast well with Brydon’s phone calls (whcih are a bit funnier) as they serve to contrast the two of them well. Rob is comfortable in his life, Steve is not. Peace vs. chaos, and I think it can help make some funny parts funnier. Just as Steve is trying to copy Rob’s man in the box stuff in the bathroom, Rob is trying to copy Steve’s “i could fuck around” kind of attitude in his calls home. They are trying each others personas on.

  10. Loved the Trip. Beautifully shot and nicely paced. The part when they were trying to emulate the sound of of Submarine ping was hilarious.

As for Transformers, I agree with Jay about the music. The coolest part was when the dudes jumped out of the with wing suits. They dropped the music out all all together and it worked. For about 10 seconds, til he brought the music back in.

  11. Why is Reed drunk?

  12. Thanks to Pete Anderson for providing the Moosehead beer. Oh, and I forgot to wish our American friends a Happy Independence Day! I can’t wait until Canada gets the balls to break away from the British Empire!

@Kent: I was celebrating America’s Independence! I only had 4 beers by the end of the show, but I started to feel the effects after the 2nd one. I think I was relatively sober for the Transformers review. And I was not drunk when I saw Transformers. I probably would have slept through the whole movie in that case. And I’m not drunk now.

  13. @Addieo: Yeah, Doug would have been great to rip apart Transformers. I’m not that passionate about movies, and I don’t have the linguistic skills that Doug possesses. Besides, I have a soft spot for Michael Bay.

  14. Reed, now that Greg is on Twitter, do you think he will follow your tweets and vice versa?

I agree with you about severing ties with the royals.

  15. Greg is on Twitter? I’ll follow him, but I’ll understand if he doesn’t follow me back.

  16. 13 Assasins should be one of reviews for the next podcast. It is a great action film.

  17. @Reed

Woops! Maybe that was supposed to be a secret. Sorry Greg.

  18. I second 13 Assassins. It’s fuckin’ great, the fact that Reed didn’t like it should be recommendation enough. One of my top 3 of the year for sure and definitely a huge turn for the better for Miike. DO IT!!

  19. The mystery music:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzjIlni8_qg

    Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf

Did this guy never go to kindergarten??? It’s a staple to cream your diapers by!

  20. Drunk Reed. Oh God.

  21. I can’t find anything when I Google “Costas Boats!”

  22. Nice show.
    Tipsy Reed is awesome.

I was wondering what you guys thought about the Hans Zimmer score for the Fanstrormers. Many people have been pointing this out, and I thought the similarity was pretty obvious. Not just that weird horn sound, but when Optimus swoops in to save everyone for the third time, he spins around alot and the scene was shown in the trailer, the strings come in and it sounds like another part from “Mind Heist”.

    And the artwork IS great.

  23. I know others have already mentioned it but the mystery song is indeed from “Peter and the Wolf” and I as well caught that immediately (It’s a hard tune to forget!).

As a kid I used to watch this short animated film almost as religiously as any Disney movie:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILI3s7Wonvg

  24. @Nils

Zimmer did not compose the score for TF3. Steve Jablonsky did.

  25. Actually, I would be interested in what the guys have to say about “13 Assassins” as well. I’m not a fan of samurai films, I guess. I did enjoy Takeshi Kitano’s version of “Zatoichi.” I thought I would enjoy “13 Assassins,” but like Transformers, the beginning story stuff is kind of ordinary and the final extended battle scene was “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

As for the Hans Zimmer score, I totally didn’t notice it or wasn’t paying attention to it. The only musical score I can think of that saved a dreary motion picture is Jerry Goldsmith’s score for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”

  26. I agree with the people saying 13 Assassins should be the review on the next show :)

  27. I wasn’t even paying any attention to the music credit.

  28. I hope the whistling email starts a trend of listeners emailing mp3s from film scores for the Film Junk guys to guess what movie it’s from. Maybe one every week?

  29. I can’t believe Reed actually got drunk. Epic! It sounded like that, but I thought there must be some other explanation. Also, regarding Sam Mendes – he’s set to direct the next James Bond flick.

  30. ‘I’ll follow him, but I’ll understand if he doesn’t follow me back.’

This is exactly why I won’t follow Reed on Twitter.

  31. I would also like the throw in a vote for a 13 assassins review. Just finished watching it and personally I don’t see what people are talking about, it wasn’t really interesting to me. I guess for samurai I’ll stick with 6 less. Also on a side note is the blu-ray censored or something? The quotes on the box keep talking about how violent it is and it seems like they said the same on the Row 3 podcast but I didn’t really think it was all that violent.

  32. I’ve started following you, Greg, but you don’t seem to be tweeting anymore.

@rjdelight: I wasn’t sure if Mendes was still set to direct the next Bond flick. I thought that news might be out-of-date considering MGM’s fortunes of late.

BTW, here’s a bit of odd coincidence that I failed to mention on the podcast. I have the book that Sam’s mom shows to him when she learns that Sam is having problems with his latest girlfriend. The coincidental part is that I was talking about this book to Jay and other friends the night before we saw the movie.

  33. Hey you got to check out alan partridge for steve coogan. its influence is everywhere.
as for brydon marion and geoff is incredible.
good podcast , i like the counter of transformers 3 and the trip. couldnt get 2 more different movies if you tried. Wish michael bay would watch the trip. I honestly believe he just wouldnt understand it. i think he would just breakdown.

  34. Takashi Miike is one of the most talented directors in the world. The man has done it all. His biggest weakness is that he is too dam prolific which makes him have an inconsistent filmography. But for every 3 to 4 bad films, you’ll get one good to great film. His Magnum opus remains Audition.

  35. @ Reed

Yeah, it was put on hold while the MGM mess was settled, but as far as I know it’s set to start shooting soon for a holiday 2012 release.

  36. ‘I’ve started following you, Greg, but you don’t seem to be tweeting anymore.’

    I didn’t realize that there’s a tweeting minimum.

  37. Anyone know what is happening with the Canadian release of 13 Assassins? Had a preorder on Amazon Canada with a release for today, but now it says the release date is September.

  38. So it appears that you haven’t read THE tweeter’s license agreement.. I am afraid you must refund your followers now buddy.

I ll Tweet you my bank account number.

  39. Amazon Canada’s brutal. They haven’t even adjusted their prices all that much for the US dollar. I ordered 13 Assassins and some other stuff through Amazon US and it shipped first thing this morning. They didn’t even have a damn cover for the thing when I was searching for it on the Canadian site this weekend!

  40. @Kent: Nils means that the score is very Zimmer-like (cue Jay’s impression)

Great episode! I thought Reed was doing a good job, maybe he should drink beer more often. And I agree that you can’t blame the voice-actors for the lack of character. Prime’s voice is the only good thing about him. The biggest problem is that you can’t tell the robots apart. I pretty much hated the first two, but I would gladly rewatch them if they replaced the robots with new models that resemble the originals.

  41. @ Reed: couldn’t agree with you more – Kitano’s “Zatoichi” is a solid samurai film and beautifully shot. One of the best recent entries in the genre. Have you seen/liked any other of Kitano’s films?

Still looking forward to “13 Assassins,” and would love to hear another review of a Miike film by Jay…for the record I absolutely hated Visitor Q, but loved Audition.

  42. I have this weird fantasy Jay and Sean are lost in the waters of Niagara and Greg has to take care of Reed due to his loyalty to the filmjunk. it is a odd couple peppered with the phrases, “for f*cksake!” and “sssooorrrryyy…” way to much

  43. WTF? Replace Prime’s voice with another actor besides Peter Cullen? Are you friggin kidding me? You know how many fanboys would stick a hot poker up your ass for even saying that? Blasphemy!

  44. Reed and Palladio81, check out Kitano’s film Getting Any for a hilarious take on Zatoichi among other parodies/satire such as Ghostbusters etc.

Have to agree with Miike being talented, sure he has some clunkers, but that’s bound to happen with such a huge output.

  45. It’s crazy how, for me, the sole addition of Reed makes the podcast go from a joy to listen to, to an absolute struggle to finish. Sorry Reed.

  46. One spy-ish movie I would maybe recommend is “The Eagle Has Landed” with Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Robert Duval. Made in 1976. I haven’t seen it in ages, but I remember it being a good, suspenseful caper movie.

For anything by LeCarrè, nothing against the new Tinker Tailor, but just read the books. They’re great.

    Party on, Reed!

  47. @Palladio81: I’ve seen Sonatine, Getting Any?, Dolls, and Brother. I’ve liked them all although Dolls was kind of arty.

@rus in chicago: Greg and I should do a remake of “Rain Man.” I want the Tom Cruise role.

@WantedWes: When Jay suggested Peter Cullen should be replaced, I imagined the fanboys sticking a hot poker up Jay’s ass (pardon your French).

@Duke Togo: To be honest, I can’t remember a thing about “Getting Any?” although I remember enjoying it.

@Austin in japan: I didn’t think I was too disruptive or argumentative during the podcast. Anyway, I guess I am a taste that some people can’t acquire.

@other greg: Thx for your recommendation. I’m familiar with that movie. The podcast guys weren’t much help.

  48. ‘Greg and I should do a remake of “Rain Man.” I want the Tom Cruise role.’

Okay, I’ll admit that this is pretty funny. Well done.

  49. Yeah Greg, you could be ‘Gasmon Farrington’, referring to yourself as ‘Gas Man’.

  50. Farrington? No way. That’s a terrible last name.

  51. True, but ‘Gasmond Gaspari’ sounds like a cartoon character. Or you could use Jerry’s real last name which is [higlight_for_spoilers]

  52. you have had a transformers review every 100 podcasts.
    ep 125, 224 and 325.
