Well now that The Crow reboot has a director in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and a potential star in Bradley Cooper, the production also recently added another important element necessary for success: its very own lawsuit! Last week The Weinstein Company filed to have the project put on hold due to the fact that they supposedly have worldwide distribution rights to the film via an agreement that Relativity Media currently has no plans to honour. The original was distributed by Miramax back in 1994, and The Weinsteins claim to have a written contract that maintains their involvement in any future adaptations. But is there any validity to their claim, and could these legal proceedings prevent the remake from happening? Something tells me that most of us won’t lose any sleep over it if this turns out to be the case.

Relativity Media has been quick to call the lawsuit “another typical litigation stunt from the Weinsteins who have a long history of threatening law suits with the sole purpose of intimidation.” They’ve even put together a list of all the lawsuits that The Weinstein Company are currently involved in, and it’s actually pretty extensive. Based on their reputation, it’s hard not to see Harvey and Bob as bullies in this situation.

However, unlike the dispute between Fox and WB over Watchmen a couple of years ago, it’s still not clear how lucrative The Crow property really is. The original made $50 million back in the mid-’90s, but even that was seen as more of a cult classic. The two groups might actually be fighting over pieces of a very small pie here.
