Captain America Super Bowl Trailer

In theory, it’s a great idea to debut the very first trailer for a summer blockbuster during the Super Bowl. You have instant access to millions of male eyeballs all at once, and there’s a good chance they will all be talking about it afterward if you can wow them. Of course, the downside is that the spots are so damn expensive that you’re only going to have 30 seconds to make an impression. In the case of Captain America: The First Avenger, those 30 seconds just fly by. I guess it’s not a bad thing that this commercial leaves you wanting more, but at the same time, it’s frustrating that the first look at this highly-anticipated movie is so damn short.
We get a good look at Chris Evans’ transformation to a bulked up physique, a couple of brief slow-mo action shots, a half second glimpse at the Red Skull, and then Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter. With so much squeezed in, it’s difficult to judge, but I’m definitely feeling pretty optimistic about this flick. What do you think, does the first trailer get the job done? Captain America: The First Avenger hits theatres on July 22nd; check out the Super Bowl commercial after the jump.

I loved it. It seems like their going for a campy adventure film, which I’m totally down for.
Is anyone else getting a Watchmen-vibe with the Warehouse and Howling Commandos scenes?
Posted by Chris on February 7th, 2011I was curious how they were going to do the transformation from skinny Steve Rogers to Super Soldier. I wonder if he actually did thin down and then bulk up, or maybe there is some CGI help there?
Posted by Maopheus on February 7th, 2011looks good. i’ll see it
Posted by Juan on February 7th, 2011That helmet with the eyes cut out of it looks like a health and safety hazard.
If it slips down over his eyes when he’s up against Hydra or the Red Skull I don’t fancy his chances much!!!
Posted by Hugh on February 7th, 2011For a teaser trailer, it accomplishes what it sets out to do and that is tease the audience and give everyone a little taste of what’s to come.
Posted by RC on February 7th, 2011this is the superhero movie of ‘11 that i’m looking forward to the most. the commercial looks good to me. in fact everything that’s been released so far from this film has impressed me.
Posted by Napalm on February 7th, 2011are you shitting me? motherfucking laserbeak is in tf3 and no mention of it on filmjunk? but the cap america trailer was cool too i must admit!

Posted by Sean on February 7th, 2011Calm down it’s transformers, It’s probably going to suck.
Posted by Gord on February 7th, 2011the cap looks awesome – just hopping there will be not too much patriotism….
Posted by Werner on February 7th, 2011I think the trailer was really cool…kind of had that 1950’s sci fi vibe…and the if they CG’d Evans making him look thin that was an awesome job! Looks good…could be a Marvel blockbuster summer with Thor and America in the theaters. So far the trailers for Thor and America make the Green Lantern movie look really cheesy but only time will tell.
Posted by 1138sw on February 7th, 2011Speaking of mega-expensive Super Bowl spots becoming pointless (they’re just going to be posted on the official sites within minutes anyway), I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to fabricate a Super Bowl spot for free.
Say for instance that you want to hook the huge Super Bowl audience but don’t have/don’t want to spend the money. Can you spread the word and say “Oh, we’re gonna have a Super Bowl ad, and it’s gonna be a huge deal”, and then “pull” the ad shortly before game day, with the excuse being that it’s too controversial, too extreme, etc., without the NFL or the network calling you on your bullshit? If you never use the term “Super Bowl” (maybe you can use “big game”, “championship game”, or just “Sunday” to avoid any sort of legal issues) in the promotion of your spot, will they just ignore you? They may just decide to ignore you anyway, not wanting to give you free promotion for your company or your web site, where the spot will be showing exclusively. The people that you need to hook or impress probably aren’t the same ones that are going to care when/if you’re exposed as a fraud for never having ponied up the cash, they just want to see this ad, so can it work? Has anyone ever tried?

PETA did that last year. Google it.
Also transformers sucks and this looks awesome.
Posted by Mike on February 7th, 2011See that’s how all trailers should be. Short and simple.
Posted by kyri on February 7th, 2011Hopefully this thing will have that classic, Rocketeer, Indiana Jones type of feeling.
can’t wait to see Red Skull…I read somewhere that Hugo Weaving based the voice on Werner Herzog!!
Posted by Phil on February 7th, 2011@Phil I had that same feeling of the Rocketeer mixed with a little Indiana Jones.
I’ll be seeing it for sure.
