Top 10 Most Illegally Downloaded Movies of 2010

With so many “Best Of” lists coming out right about now, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at a slightly more dubious Top 10, that being the Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2010. TorrentFreak has been compiling these statistics for a few years now, and while common logic would dictate that the most popular and commercially successful movies would probably also be the most downloaded, there are also other a few factors that come into play. The most obvious is whether or not the movie appeals to a young male geek demographic, and another is whether or not a decent quality torrent leaked online while the movie was still in theatres.

My first guess for most pirated movie of 2010 would have been Inception, which was only at #3. Topping the list was Avatar, which apparently set a new record with over 16 million downloads. The biggest surprise, however, was Kick-Ass, which racked up the second highest number of illegal downloads with over 11 million. Considering the movie only made $96 million worldwide, it certainly seems like this might have cut into its profits. What do you think, do illegal downloads make a difference? Are there any other surprises here? Check out the full list after the jump.

How do they keep track of what’s being illegally downloaded?

by counting the logged ip addresses

Clearly torrents are hurting the movie industry. Would be curious to see this list compared with Box Office top grossers but too lazy to actually compile numbers.

What a coincidence, it fits with the top 10 most overrated films in the period of 2008-2010!

Well if the box office would quit raising the price of the tickets and such, people would probably go see the movies more. Since it is just so much easier to download them. They are the ones shooting themselves in the foot
