Great to have a new gamejunk podcast. I will spent “aboot” 3 hours in trains today, so this is very much appreciated!
Posted by Eisensammler on October 29th, 2010Love it!
Other great licensed games:
Posted by Jonny Ashley on October 29th, 2010King Kong, Jaws Unleashed, Chronicles of Riddick Butcher Bay/Dark Athena, World of Illusion with Mickey and Donald for Sega Genesis
Awesome episode guys. I think you’re really finding the grove for this podcast. Can’t wait for the November episode. Sean, I think you would like Dead Space a lot. It’s got a lot in common with RE4, but also has definite influences from Event Horizon and the Alien movies. But the best part of that game, that you guys didn’t mention, is definitely the creepy sound design. Were you guys going to post your PSN IDs or Gamertags to connect with your listeners? Hope you review Halo Reach, btw. Keep it up guys.
Posted by Matt on October 29th, 2010Thanks Matt… I’ll definitely have to check out Dead Space. My gamertag is Dwired on both XBLA and PSN, but I’m not really on there all that often. We were talking about maybe trying to set up some specific dates to go online and play some multiplayer stuff with listeners though. Halo Reach would be an obvious choice I think.
Posted by Sean on October 29th, 2010Glad Aladdin for the Genesis got some love. The SNES version doesn’t even compare.
Posted by Heaven's Smile on October 29th, 2010Another great episode, thanks for answering my question.
Posted by bard on October 29th, 2010I haven’t listened to it yet, downloading it right now, but I see you mention Blur. I hope you guys like it. For me it was one of the surprises of the year.
Posted by Stephen on October 29th, 2010My (Andrew) PSN id is HuckCity. I don’t have my 360 on the internet ever and don’t have gold so i won’t bother with that one.
@Jonny: Totally agree about Riddick, I never played Athena bay, but I heard they are basically the same game.
Posted by HuckCity on October 29th, 2010Another fantastic episode.
I didn’t complete the water level in TMNT before I was an adult and played it on an emulator. Took me acouple tries, but now I can do it practically in my sleep. I count that as beating one of the biggest monsters from my childhood, because I played that shit for a week straight on a holiday with my folks, and you had to pay to play the NES. So my folks paid so much money and I couldn’t beat that level, I had to go back to it.
Scary games: Half-Life 2 scared the shit out of me. When I was playing that, especially through Ravenholm of course, I often had to jus save and instantly quit and put on Friends episodes to calm myself down for being so tense. Alien VS. Predator too, that first marine mission was insane.
Also, this one is for Sean, there is a point in the original Maniac Mansion where a freaky green monster (obviously if you know english you can easierly appreciate the comedy in the game, but as a danish child I had no idea what was going on) appears out of nowhere in a room and immediatly starts chasing you… I have read that you can supposedly avoid being taken by this monster, but I was never able to do it, and when I played it as a youngster that was a terrifying point in the game.
I would put Metroid Prime up there as one of my most frustrating game experiences. I never knew where I was supposed to go, and all my progress seemed random to me untill I finally reached a point where I for the life of me could not get any further.
There’s gotta be some sort of PC game you guys can play in multiplayer – I wanna get in on this action but I’m off consoles
.
By the way, for fans of the podcast, I have to recommend cinemassacre.com ‘s Angry Video Game Nerd. He reviews retrogames from 8 and 16bit consoles, and it’s pretty awesome. He has a ton of licensed game there, usually coinciding with all the new movies in these franchises – Terminator, Transformers, X-Men, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man etc. Check it out for a good laugh.
Posted by Henrik on October 29th, 2010Also, I played through Enter The Matrix back in the day, and that was a decent game. Pretty sure it was made by the Sacrifice-guy and that’s why I got it. Nothing spectacular, but pretty good.
Maybe next weeks top 5 should be top 5 game developers! I don’t know if I could even name 5, and I probably couldn’t spell the japanese names… Might be too hard. Shoutout to Warren Spector though.
Posted by Henrik on October 29th, 2010Henrik: I was totally going to mention Maniac Mansion but I thought people might get sick of me talking about it. If you go straight into the kitchen at the beginning of the game Nurse Edna is in there and she’ll chase you down and throw you in the dungeon.
Half-Life 2 is a good call as well. What do you mean you had to pay to play the NES?
Top 5 game developers might be tough because there are only a handful of well-known individual game designers (Miyamoto, Kojima, Cliffy B) but top companies might be an interesting topic.
Posted by Sean on October 30th, 2010Nurse Edna gave me the chills man!
It was at this family-friendly hotel thing, and at the main lobby they had an NES hooked up to a small TV, and if you paid a small amount, they gave you controllers and games for like 30 minutes or so (I can’t remember specifics at all, but this seems like it makes sense). It was basically the ma and pa equivalent of an arcade game.
This must have been like 1995 or 1996, and since consoles are pretty delayed here (back then moreso than now I think), the NES was pretty hot at the time.
Posted by Henrik on October 30th, 2010Or, at least it seemed that way to me. I kinda get my memory fucked up. I had an NES back in the day, but I think SNES was already out, and I used to rent MegaDrive at the gas station, before eventually buying a used MegaDrive 2 at a flea market at some point. It’s hard for me to remember which years I played what – I also got a PlayStation at one point, but that came out in 1995 when I was 8 years old, and I definitely think I was older than 8 years when I played it. Probably closer to 12, because I remember FIFA ’99, but at that point it seems like PS2 is almost out when I look at historics. So it’s all become somewhat a blur to me, trying to remember how old I was when I played any given system.
Posted by Henrik on October 30th, 2010“Miyamoto, Kojima, Cliffy B”
Come on man, Warren Spector, Peter Molyneux, Sacrifice-guy (think his name is something Perry?), Sid Meier! These guys are mainly PC legends though, you guys do seem to be much more heavily involved with consoles. Probably because you grew up having friends!
Posted by Henrik on October 30th, 2010Peter Molyneux is by no means a legendary developer. His shtick is
1) Hype the shit out of your product
2) ???
3) Profit!
Then hope your audience has forgotten the last number of disappointments, and hype the shit out of your next project. I haven’t played a single game which even came close to the amount of promise that he threw at it. His games are by no means bad, they’re just derivative, generic and all-round disappointing.
Posted by Steve on October 30th, 2010Point taken! I just mentioned him because I know his name, I thought Populeus had a big fanbase.
What is the music on the show?
Posted by Henrik on October 31st, 2010You’re right, Warren Spector, Peter Molyneux, and Sid Meier are definitely well-known video game personalities as well. I still think it would be a tough top 5 to put together.
Here are the intro and outro tracks:
Intro: Hirokazu Tanaka – Metroid Theme (NES)
Posted by Sean on October 31st, 2010Outro: Anamanaguchi – Another Winter (from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Game OST)
Following up to the NBA Elite discussion we had, 1up is reporting that NBA Elite has been moved from EA Canada to Tiburon (Madden developers). Probably not a good sign that it’s going to be coming out this year.

Also, good luck to all those EA employees that just got caught by the lay-off bug.
Posted by HuckCity on November 1st, 2010Another great podcast. Being a PC gamer I’m a bit lost by all of the ‘awards’ talk, but it sounds crazy ! Looking forward to more stories of this insanity.
Posted by Paul Andrews on November 2nd, 2010By the way can we get HuckCity explained on the next podcast?
Posted by Henrik on November 3rd, 2010Great podcast..
For all the game junkies out there , I really recommend this book that came out this year :
1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
it’s a great way to look back at the last + – 30 years of gaming..
cheers
