Interested to hear what Jay has to say about his recent watches from Indonesia! Lady Terminator and Virgins From Hell are fuckin` amazing!
Posted by Fatbologna on September 8th, 2010Rodriguez did do the music for Machete. The band in the credits, Chingon, is his band.
Posted by rjdelight on September 8th, 2010Frank hits it out of the park – again.
Just curious – Have you guys heard from “The Hett” lately ? He used to send in stuff and he was awesome.
Posted by Mark in Ottawa on September 8th, 2010Interesting, I didn’t know that was Rodriguez’s band. Either way, the credits also list John Debney and Carl Thiel as contributing original music… not sure how much of it was theirs.
Posted by Sean on September 8th, 2010“The Hett” should be a regular contributor…or a buddy movie short w/ Reed
Posted by rus in chicago on September 8th, 2010Jay’s thoughts (to a degree) echo my print-review of THE AMERICAN. I get everything the film is going for, and it looks great, but doesn’t bring enough new to the table to fully endorse the film. That being said it is a great film when you are watching it, but doesn’t seem to hold up on reflection. Some of the symbols are a bit heavy handed, but the ‘gun stuff’ is great.

Posted by Kurt on September 8th, 2010Gator was the best skateboarding documentary I’ve seen. It’s just awesome. I thought I had heard about it on Film Junk a while back, but I just searched the archives and did not see it anywhere.

HOLY SHIT THAT WOOULD BE COOL !
It’d be like Fubar except with Reed – awesome.
Posted by Mark in Ottawa on September 8th, 2010Yeah Kurt, looks like we’re basically on the same page with The American.
Posted by Jay C. on September 8th, 2010Someone tell Gamble that Edgar agrees with me on some of the ‘unreliable narrator’/dream aspects of Scott Pilgrim.
You mock, but I rock.
Posted by Kurt on September 8th, 2010Highlander 2 is watchable, Predator 2 is f’n awesome. But Jay is wrong, the film was most definitely not well received at the time.
The Matrix 3 certainly ruined Matrix 2 in that there was so much great set-up in Part 2 that payed off for shit in the trilogy capper.
I think the world wants a sequel to inception that follows Tom Hardy and JGL kicking ass in other peoples dreams.
Posted by Kurt on September 8th, 2010I agree with the guys’ review of the American. One thing that felt while watching it and then thinking about it was about the sparseness and terseness of the dialogue. It almost stood out too much. For example, one should assume that conversations and actions occur off-screen. So you would assume that Jack and the priest would have had conversations off-screen. Like when Jack goes over to his house for dinner, you’d think they’d have some chitchat. But it’s hard to imagine that given the very little dialogue while on-screen. Same with Jack and the prostitute. What the hell did they talk about? I also agree that it seemed very strange how their relationship just kind of developed out of nowhere. The one thing that would have made a good spoiler discussion and I’m surprised you didn’t have one is about the final scenes. I’m still trying to figure it out.
Posted by Maopheus on September 8th, 2010it’s sad that Greg couldn’t make it tonight. Greg should quit his day job and dedicate himself to filmjunk podcast.
Posted by Kyriacos on September 8th, 2010If there’s one celebrity that I almost lost my cool “meeting” it was Werner Herzog when he came to Philly three years ago to promote “Encounters”. (OMG WE WERE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER AND HE WAS TOTALLY WEARING THAT JACKET HE WEARS *swoon*) I would camp out to hear that man speak again and again.
Also, my friends were arguing with me that they believe Machete was a serious take on current events. Yes, my friends are idiots.
Posted by Falsk on September 8th, 2010I too am very interested to hear what Jay has to say about the LOST finale.
Have you seen the Richard Alpert episode yet, Jay? Because that’s one of the best episodes of the last season.
Posted by Kent on September 8th, 2010Is it just me, or do Frank and Greg sound exactly the same? In tone of voice and word choice, they match perfectly, in my brain at least. I’m thinking it is a conspiracy by film junk to mess with my head.
Posted by Mactavian on September 9th, 2010thanks guys, great show!
Posted by anton on September 9th, 2010I thought this episode was particularly great. THE AMERICAN talk was lively and insightful – it certainly sprung my interest in the film. Frank is an extremely funny guy; his hard copy/digital copy speech was the high point of the show.
Posted by Maxime Gérin on September 9th, 2010Someone tell Gamble that Edgar agrees with me on some of the ‘unreliable narrator’/dream aspects of Scott Pilgrim.
Jesus you’re a lunatic.
unreliable narrator =/= dream
That’s why they use different words and definitions for them.
Posted by Matt Gamble on September 9th, 2010re The American
He didn’t build the gun (that came pre-packed in the post), he was there to build a silencer. How the hell could you miss that?
Posted by CleanFish on September 10th, 2010FYI: Jay pretty much spoils the opening of The American during his review. I don’t think it was intentional but it’s one of the best things about the flick so people who haven’t seen it yet might want to fast forward a bit.
Posted by rjdelight on September 10th, 2010I would like to see a sequel to “The Three Amigos” or perhaps a prequel such as “Little Neddy goes to War” or “Those Darn Amigos”.
Posted by Xidor on September 12th, 2010Frank kicks ass. Keep him.
