Supernatural Creator Bringing Neil Gaiman’s Sandman to TV?

Now that Zack Snyder managed to bring one “unfilmable” graphic novel to the big screen last year with Watchmen, someone else is finally getting the courage to try adapting another challenging comic series, this time for the small screen. Neil Gaiman’s Sandman is considered by many to be one of the most ambitious mainstream comics ever created, and became a flagship title for DC’s adult-oriented Vertigo imprint in the early ’90s. After going through development hell as a feature film for years (with Roger Avary attached to direct at one point), Warner Brothers have since decided that the ideal medium is television, and they are now in talks with a number of writers and producers to turn it into a series. At the top of the list of possible creative talent being considered is Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.

The story of Sandman revolves around Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, who is captured for 70 years by an occult ritual and seeks to reclaim his kingdom. It started as a horror series but eventually became much more fantasy-based throughout its original run. With such a fanatical following, there will clearly be a lot of pressure on whoever decides to adapt it.

The key thing that most people are wondering is whether or not Neil Gaiman will be involved. The answer, it would seem, is not yet, although they are still hoping to get him on board before they get too far into development. As for Kripke, I’ve only caught an episode or two of Supernatural and it didn’t seem like anything special to me, but I know it has a decent following of its own. What do you think, can Sandman be turned into a killer TV series, and is Eric Kripke the right man to do it?

  1. One of the few graphic novels I have actually read, way back when it came out, and I loved it. Going to be extremely difficult to put this on screen, but I’ll see it if they give it at least a decent try. Never seen anything from Eric Kripke, so can’t comment there. I’d rather see it as a film, but that may be even more difficult to do.

I actually know someone that did their PhD thesis on the Sandman comics. It was a dense read, but pretty fascinating.

  2. I think TV is easily a better approach for this…

  3. I’ll agree with demonhead6 on this. It’s what’s a bit interesting about the Walking Dead. I’ll give this a try, but I’m not holding my breath.

  4. Yeah, it is better suited for TV, but I just prefer novies to TV by a substantial margin.
