First Look at the New Back to the Future Video Game

Although we just launched the Game Junk podcast last month, we typically don’t post much video game-related stuff here on Film Junk simply because I know a lot of you aren’t interested. However, this is definitely something that is worth making an exception for. In case you haven’t heard, earlier this year the game studio formed by several ex-Lucasarts employees, Telltale Games, acquired the rights to both Jurassic Park and Back to the Future with the intention of releasing new games based on these classic movie franchises. Now this week they’ve unveiled the first piece of artwork for the Back to the Future game, and confirmed the involvement of both Christopher Lloyd and Bob Gale.

Much like the Ghostbusters game that came out last year, they are treating this almost as an opportunity to create an unofficial sequel to these films. It’s still unclear if the game will follow the exact same events of the movies, but Back to the Future screenwriter Bob Gale is helping them come up with the plot for five distinct episodes to be set in 1985-era Hill Valley. Christopher Lloyd will reprise his role as Doc Brown, and although Michael J. Fox will not contribute his voice, his likeness will appear in the game as Marty McFly. The series will debut sometime this winter, soon after the release of Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy on DVD and Blu-ray on October 26th.

The big question is, what kind of game will this be? Up until now, Telltale has been known for reviving the point-and-click adventure game genre, but they’ve said that for the Jurassic Park game in particular they want to do something more tense, action-oriented and “cinematically much more serious” than their previous titles. Either way, I trust these guys to do a good job with the material, and I’m pretty excited about the possibilities. Are you looking forward to Telltale’s take on Back to the Future, or will it be just another crappy licensed game?

  1. MJ Fox had plenty of time to do Stuart Little 3, but not this? I’m sure it’ll be good, LucasArts games rule.

  2. I am not all that into gaming but ..Anyone knows if I Can play this on a Mac?

  3. @Kyriacos: There’s no specs yet, sounds like they haven’t got past the planning stage yet. But since Telltale decided to port their entire catalog of games to the Mac earlier this year, I’d assume any new stuff would come out on the Mac as well.

  4. I’m excited by this news! If it’s any bit as good as Ghostbusters was, it should definitely be a real treat for fans of this franchise….like me! :D
