Darren Aronofsky in the Running to Direct Wolverine 2?

A couple of weeks ago we heard that David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) was on the verge being named the director of Fox’s upcoming sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was down to him and Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, Red), but word on the street was that Slade had the inside track and that the studio was really pushing for him. Now this week it seems that Schwentke has taken himself out of the running, but a pretty interesting name has been added to the mix at the last minute. Could Darren Aronofsky steal the job out from under David Slade’s nose?
According to Deadline New York, Hugh Jackman met with David Slade over the weekend on the set of his current film Real Steel, but he has also been holding discussions with Aronofsky, who he worked with previously on The Fountain. As mentioned previously, Jackman has a lot of say in this decision, although you have to think that Slade would be the studio’s preferred choice.
It’s a bit odd to think that Darren Aronofsky would consider another comic book movie after his Batman movie fell apart so many years ago, but if there’s another similar anti-hero character out there, it’s gotta be Wolverine. Every time it seems like Aronofsky is about to sign on to do a tentpole film of some sort (Robocop), he balks at the studio interference and other various roadblocks that crop up. It simply does not seem like he’s cut out for these kinds of films, but perhaps his working relationship with Jackman will convince him otherwise. Would you like to see Aronofsky direct Wolverine 2, or should he just stay away from big studio films?

I higly, highly doubt that.
Posted by swarez on August 31st, 2010In the end it’s probably going to be none of the above.
Ugh, would comic book movies just die already… I agree with Swarez, in the end its most likely just going to be some random dude directing this movie. (btw it would be awesome if somehow you could like comments like on Facebook, Sean
)
Posted by Drew on August 31st, 2010yeah, it’ll never happen. Would be incredibly awesome though.
Posted by Ryan M. on August 31st, 2010There is no way Aronofsky is going to be involved with a sequel to a crappy movie.
Posted by Big B on August 31st, 2010“Ugh, would comic book movies just die already”
What a dumb statement. What would the reaction be to:
“Ugh, would movies based on books just die already”
Sounds really dumb, doesn’t it? I’d assume what you really mean is:
“Ugh, would super hero movies just die already”
But, even that, pretty silly. It’s not going to happen. Not to mention… why would you want it to? Just like every single other genre of film, there’s good ones and bad ones. To think otherwise is asinine.
Posted by Ben on August 31st, 2010I would much rather see his Robocop. Jackman probably realizes the first film stunk and would like to re-vive the films and character byt bringing in Aronofsky. However Slade seems like the better choice for this to be honest
Posted by KeithTalent on August 31st, 2010Im sorry that im so dumb.
Posted by Drew on August 31st, 2010I didn’t say you were dumb; I said your statement was dumb.
Posted by Ben on September 1st, 2010What’s worse than Aronofsky directing Wolverine 2? Making a Wolverine 2.
Posted by Chris on September 1st, 2010Aronofsky could direct traffic and it would be entertaining and brilliant, so whereas the idea of Wolverine 2 is an awful one, if it ever came off the end result would be fantastic. Like everyone else though I’d rather he did something else. The Fountain 2 would do me – love that film.
