I also liked the movie, its a solid 3.5..
I am getting the feeling Sean’s filmtaste has been “womanized” over the years. That is what eventually happens when you get married, (stage 4) I ‘ve seen it before, maybe its time to have a kid or smthng..
Posted by Kyriacos on August 30th, 2010Womanized? That’s debatable. Between the two of us, I’ve always been the horror fan.
Posted by Alicia on August 30th, 2010I haven’t listened to the show but I’m pretty certain that I didn’t justify my rating due to my unpreparedness. We had just seen the movie prior to the show and I hadn’t had a lot of time to think about it.
I enjoyed the movie, but I feel like they really wanted this twist ending and so they glossed over some things I would have rathered they focus more attention on. It felt like in order to throw the viewer off the trail, they came to a lot of false conclusions that made sense until you see the ending, and then looking back, you can’t wrap your head around the logistics.
I didn’t feel a great deal of tension during the movie, if any. The part that was to create a lot of tension I’d seen the style done before, and better. I would have rathered they had left it more open ended.
Posted by Alicia on August 30th, 2010Jay gave it a 3.5? Honestly? I mean maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention or something but I really didnt see anything special about it. It seemed to coast off both Horror conventions and just plain old Blair Witch style mockumentary conventions. The guy behind the camera was painful, it seemed almost like he was ADR’ed in 5 minutes before they wrapped production by some PA. And that ending… ugh… just dumb. It just all seemed really poorly done too me.
Posted by Drew on August 30th, 2010I love that Alicia is contributing more to the site/podcasts. now if we can get Jay’s pedophile uncle – PERFECTION!!
Posted by rus in chicago on August 30th, 2010I certainly do not accuse you for castration Alice.
Posted by Kyriacos on August 30th, 2010All I can say is that if I you don’t think I have manly enough taste in movies right now, then I never have.
Posted by Sean on August 30th, 2010I managed to get through Lost, all 6 seasons waaay after they were aired without hitting any spoilers. It’s one of those cases where the hard-cores think it is a world-wide phenomenon, talked about everywhere, but to those who don’t follow the show, more or less silence.
Memories of Murder, and Song-Kang Ho are awesome. SKH is more the ‘tom hanks’ of Korea than The Russel Crowe, but I’ll stop now…
Taxidermia is awesome, see it.
Posted by Kurt on August 30th, 2010Strangely enough, there were some Lost spoilers on the Emmys last night.
Posted by Sean on August 30th, 2010I would like to see the book Glamorama by Brent Easton Ellis made into a movie, although it would be challenging. I know Roger Avery was involved in trying to get it made but pretty sure it got scrapped. I don’t know who would be a good director for it, although I wouldn’t mind Mary Herndon doing it since I felt she did pretty well with American Psycho.
Sean’s film taste womanized? lol wut. how you figure?
Posted by foodshooter on August 30th, 2010I was a day-player on “Teach”–so pumped to see what they ended up doing with the footage, hahaha. XD Pretty excited for “Boardwalk Empire” and the return of “30 Rock”.
I enjoyed Alicia’s comment about “Walking Dead” taking on the stupid influx of vampire shows. Helllz yeah.
Posted by Falsk on August 31st, 2010Oh, and btw Delicatessen SUCKS. In all levels.
Posted by Kyriacos on August 31st, 2010Just finished listening to the show and just wanted to say that Film Junk has been at it’s absolute best lately. I LOVE YOU GUYS.
Posted by Drew on August 31st, 2010Thanks Drew. We do it all for you!
Posted by Sean on August 31st, 2010Alicia on the show was hilarious. Made Sean funnier too!
Posted by Henrik on August 31st, 2010Easton Ellis’ reaction to Zoolander which he felt was a rip-off of Glamorama http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/collective/A6127427
Posted by john on August 31st, 2010You all should run out and watch City of Lost Children. Hell, I’ll add it as my selection of the Movie Club Podcast.
Also Sean, listen to your wife and read House of Leaves. It’s fucking amazing. And I agree that it could probably be done but I don’t think you could get the three story lines in the film and make it coherent in any fashion. You’d have to strip it down to just the video of the house, which if done well could be ridiculously creepy.
Posted by Matt Gamble on September 1st, 2010Sean, The Good the Bad the Weird is WAYYYYYYY better than Sukiyaki Django.
As a movie that’s representing this new “Oriental Western” genre (another one coming out soon is called “Warrior’s Way”, with Geoffrey Rush and Kate Bosworth), TGTBTW definitely leads the pack.
I gotta agree with Jay that some of the action sequences felt fantasy-like, even though a lot of them were done with practical effects. Doesn’t detract from the experience though, the shoot-outs were pretty awesome.
Posted by Kamen Liew on September 1st, 2010Oh yeah Jay, what did you think about the soundtrack to The Good the Bad the Weird?
Posted by Kamen Liew on September 1st, 2010Hey Matt, I’ve been trying to get someone, anyone, to read House of Leaves for at least 5 years. Every time I pull it off our bookshelf, however, the size of it intimidates the interested party and then they don’t take it.
If it was ever made into a movie, I think it could work as a framed narrative. It might be really similar to The Descent though.
Posted by Alicia on September 1st, 2010Well Sean’s a fucking idiot, because House of Leaves is truly outstanding. One of the things I try to do to help sell it is flip through the book for people to see just how oddly it is layed out and how a good chunk of the book their are only a few words per page. Though I’m sure you do the same thing.
You could probably do it with a framed narrative, but it would be a really daunting task to show how the multiple people who are watching the video tape are descending into madness while the people are going deeper into the house. Their aren’t many directors who I think could pull it off, though I think Lynch would be my dream choice. He could really nail the eery mood and overwhelming sense of dread that exists throughout the entire story.
I will say this, the opening of the book would be totally killer on film and you could do that exactly how its written.
Posted by Matt Gamble on September 1st, 2010another great episode! thaaankkksss guys. filmjunk is best entertainment for me.
Posted by anton on September 2nd, 2010Agreed Matt. Well, about the HoL stuff. Not about Sean.
Posted by Alicia on September 2nd, 2010Hey all,
Great podcast. Alicia was a good addition to the regular format. She’d be a good fall back guest if Jay or Greg aren’t there – I know some people find the people’s champ (Reed) a little annoying.
I saw the film yesterday and I think it would have been helped if there was no music in the film. When they were running through the house there seemed to be eerie strings playing – a little distracting.
The twist was good. Unexpected. It’s neat that they actually mention the cult when they’re at the gas station inviewing old ladies – you don’t think about it at the time.
By the way, great sound clip for the podcast – You really do an awesome job Sean.
