You are amazing!
Posted by foxmulder on July 30th, 2010Simply awesome! This shot up to the top of the list along with the film junk podcast.
Keep up the great work guys.
Posted by Jad Rida on July 30th, 2010Nice, downloading now. I guess Game Junk makes sense. My name suggestion would be C-C-Convo Breaker!
Posted by Heaven's Smile on July 30th, 2010WIN.
Posted by Nate on July 30th, 2010Nice. Quickly downloading it and then enjoying it. Thanks guys.
Posted by Michael Kastner on July 30th, 2010I think Pixel Junk would be a better name. The only problem is that that is a game production company so you may not be able to use the name (i dont know about these sorts of things)
Posted by rob on July 30th, 2010This is the first podcast I’ve ever listened to that I wished I was on.
Posted by Henrik on July 30th, 2010THE GAME GENIES
Posted by Bryan on July 30th, 2010I got a name for your podcast…..
Joy Shtick
Posted by Glen on July 30th, 2010Man, if Blizzard hadn’t fucked everybody in the ass with their no-cross realm play policy, I could’ve duked it out with Frank and Sean in Starcraft II. That would have been amazing.
I was really disappointed with the storyline and general tone of the campaign, but the gameplay (and the missions in the campaign) is amazing.
Gonna do a top 5 games myself right now:
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario Bros. 3
Starcraft/Brood War/Starcraft 2
Deus Ex
Dota (Warcraft 3)
Hon. mentions: Streets of Rage 2, Rome: Total War and others.
Posted by Henrik on July 30th, 2010Yeah we considered Pixel Junk but it would have been confusing because people might have thought it was the official podcast of the company or something.
Maybe we can use some of the other cool suggestions as names of segments on the show.
Feel free to suggest games to review for future episodes. Henrik, you’ll be happy to know that I’m pushing Chronotrigger as one of the upcoming retro reviews. I’ve never played it but I’ve had the DS version sitting on my shelf for a while now.
Posted by Sean on July 30th, 2010How do i send Junk Mail to Game Junk?
Posted by Wonderer on July 30th, 2010The same way you send it to Film Junk. filmjunk@gmail.com
Posted by Sean on July 30th, 2010If none of you have played Chrono Trigger, I think it would make for an excellent discussion.
By the way, when I search for Game Junk on iTunes I get another podcast called Game Junkies
. The name thing really is pretty hard.
Posted by Henrik on July 30th, 2010Chrono Trigger is fucking amazing. Henrik is right to rank it so high, truly one of the best games ever made.
Posted by Matt Gamble on July 30th, 2010Still listening to the podcast, but my top 5 games atm:
Quake 3 Arena(PC)
Starcraft/BW (PC)
Street Fighter 2 Turbo Championship Edition (Arcade)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Final Fantasy VI(III in America) (SNES)
I also have to mention these – Super Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Castlevania: SOTN, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, NBA Jam T.E., F-Zero, FF VII, GTA III, System Shock 2, Half-Life, Contra, WoW, Rome: Total War, Diablo 2, The Legend of Zelda Link to the Past, Kirby’s Pinball Land, Dr. Mario., Doom I/II, Little Nemo The Dream Master, Tapper, FF Tactics, C&C Red Alert, TMNT 2 (The Arcade Game), Life Force, Duke Nukem 3D, NHL 94, Virtua Racing, Ikaruga
I love too many games, hehe.
I don’t think SNES was ever behind Genesis. I will give you that if it’s anything sports, you had to play the Genesis version.
Posted by Primal on July 30th, 2010I liked the first show and hope this will be at least a monthly thing. Which other videogame podcast can you recommend.
Greetings from Bavaria, Germany
Posted by Michael Kastner on July 30th, 2010You sold me with the Mega Man 2 intro. This is just as good as Filmjunk.
Posted by Senor G on July 30th, 2010Nice. Good call guys. Don’t know how in hell I’m going to find time in the week to listen to this, the Film Junk Podcast and Row Three’s though (plus High and Lowbrow – just started listening to that, it seems to be right up my alley).
Posted by David Brook on July 30th, 2010I’m guessing that jay won’t be joining this cast anytime soon right?
Posted by Theman on July 30th, 2010I loved the first episode guys. Can’t wait for the next one.
Frank did a great job and sean was good as usual.
But no love for Zelda in your Top 5′s???
This would be mine today:
1) The Legend of Zelda – A Link To The Past (SNES)
2) The Orange Box (Half Life 2 and Portal in one Package is unbeatable) (PC)
3) Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)
4) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) interchangeable with almost every other Super Mario though
5) Uncharted 2 (PS3)
Hmmm… weird… i consider myself more a Retro Gamer but my Top 5 Games are almost all from the newest Console cycle.
Anyway…
Posted by BrutalHomer on July 30th, 2010Great show guys, but you should get Theme Music for the different sections, just like with FilmJunk. But not the same ones though.
Oh and my top er 15 games (couldn’t pick just 5) would probably be (in stream of consciousness order):
Civilization 2
Posted by David Brook on July 30th, 2010Sensible Soccer
Monkey Island 2 – Le Chuck’s Revenge
Mario Kart DS
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Fallout 3
Tetris
NBA Jam
Medieval: Total War
Final Fantasy VII
Doom II
Half Life
Deus Ex
Operation Flashpoint
Shoot Em Up Construction Kit
BrutalHomer: Both Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past would definitely be honourable mentions for me.
Posted by Sean on July 30th, 2010This seems to be your very own Cantankerous Sea. Great work. Does this mean Cantankerous will be renamed to Jerry’s Junk?
Posted by Juan Costrada on July 30th, 2010Oh my top 5 isn’t ranked per se, it’s just the 5 games that I thought of when I made the list. They could all be no. 1 I think, I just wrote them down in whatever order.
Posted by Henrik on July 30th, 2010This rules, consider me tuned in.
Posted by Jonny Ashley on July 30th, 2010the only thing left is for Greg to do his own spinoff podcast (Wrestling junk)
Posted by Joe on July 30th, 2010How long until you guys do a FAQ Hags segment?
Posted by Matt Gamble on July 30th, 2010Wow – I can’t wait to listen to this – many thanks !
Posted by Paul Andrews on July 31st, 2010This really exceeded my expectations. Excellent show guys, now you just need a third guy/gal for the show, or be really good at picking interesting guests!
A shame it’s only once a month though.
Posted by Kasper on July 31st, 2010Make Greg or Reed a guest on atari 2600…. flash back
Posted by Big Hungry on July 31st, 2010Good show
Been waiting forever for you guys to talk about games…Hope you can keep it up
Posted by fan on August 2nd, 2010Holy Shit! Video Games and Filmjunk; My two favorite things coming together. Thank you guys sooo much. Hope it continues. Can’t wait to listen.
Posted by Matt on August 2nd, 2010Finally got around to listening to this yesterday, and it was incredible. Frank is one of my favorite guests on Film Junk, so this was just fantastic.
I don’t have the time/money to keep up with video games now, so I just live vicariously through friends, online news/reviews, and now this podcast!!! Absolutely loved it. Keeping the same structure as Film Junk is a good idea, “…if I ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is totally right!
Top 5 (interchangeable) Games:
1. Metroid Prime Trilogy – LOVE that this got some attention, and can’t wait for the Metroid Special.
2. Pikmin – Hopefully you guys enjoyed this as much as I did.
3. Super Mario 64 – A mix of nostalgia/innovation for it’s time. Amazing.
4. Road Rash 64 – This game is hilarious and super repetitive, but I love it anyways.
5. Mario Kart 64 – To me, the best one in the series.
Wow, I look like a total Nintendo fanboy. I’m not really… but my fondest video game memories are mainly Nintendo ones.
Can’t wait for the next podcast!
Posted by bard on August 2nd, 2010nice job guys, keep it up.
Posted by Snorfle on August 2nd, 2010Great show, guys. Frank, I’m digging your complete nerdiness. Dwyer, it’s nice to hear you speak your mind without Jay cutting you off every chance he gets. Waiting for more!
Posted by Manateeman on August 3rd, 2010My two cents: great show guys. Between this and my new PS3 I’m finally getting back into games again after a long hiatus of just not caring. Haven’t heard all yet, but loving all the retro talk (GOLDENEYE!) and can’t wait to get to the Red Dead Redemption discussion. That is seriously making itself a contender for one of my top five of all time. Gorgeous.
Keep it up!
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010Oh and since everyone else is posting, here are my top games of all time:
11)Myst (PC)
10)Super Mario 64(N64)
9)Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic (Xbox)
8)Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando (PS2)
7)Super Mario Kart(SNES)
6)Bionic Commando (NES)
5)Tiger Woods 2002-2010(PS2/PS3)
4)Halo(Xbox)
3)Goldeneye 007(N64)
2)Super Mario Brothers(NES)
1)Grand Theft Auto III (PS2)
P.S. – I can beat “E.T.” on the Atari everytime. Ha!
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010About all the Metroid Prime love…I bought a GameCube when it was released, and I got the Rogue Leader game and the Resident Evil remake first. Now both of those games weren’t particularly exciting I thought, so I was hoping for Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime to justify this big investment. Smash Bros. I never got into, was my first time trying out the franchise and I thought it was too boring, and Metroid Prime? I really don’t understand how it is anything special. Frank praised the map but he must have been a much more hardcore gamer, because I just remember being confused all the time, not having any fun with the FPS view (having to just click one button to aim at a random target and another button to shoot it is a far cry from my beloved mouse), and not having any sense of direction or purpose to the game (much like Resident Evil). The ball sequences were cool, but few and far between, and in the beginning especially you’re just stuck running around, bumping into walls and clicking the same two buttons to aim and fire at random enemies. I was never big on mythology and stuff like that, so I didn’t do any of the extensive reading that the game presented me with, and actually thought it was kinda piss-poor that I had to read certain things in order to play the game.
The GameCube is still probably the biggest waste of money of my life, and put me off of consoles forever, and Metroid Prime was one of those flagship games that was supposed to be worthwhile, but it stands out as horrible for me.
By the way, if anybody is interested in an extremely cheap PAL GameCube (to play some of the awesome games and completely your non-european model collection of game systems), let me know!
Posted by Henrik on August 3rd, 2010Metroid Prime was a lot of fun I thought. I get your complaints Henrik, but yeah, I think it was the way they took all of the stuff from the original game and integrated it so well into a 3-D FPS world. It almost felt like I was playing the original game from the viewpoint of Samus.
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010On to the Red Dead talk. I was a little surprised you guys weren’t more into this game. I think it is easily the most gorgeous game I’ve ever seen for starters. I find myself just stopping my horse all the time to just look at stuff. My late night ride across the “grand canyon” during a lightning storm was a highlight of my weekend. Those Mexican haciendas and the rendering of the horse and the detail in campsites, wagons, villages, etc is absolutely astounding. I admit to being out of gaming for the past few years, but this is the best looking thing I’ve ever seen.
Second, the music is retarded awesome. Every song that comes through those speakers completely wows me everytime. All of the “Man with no Name” type music and the sort of “Duck You Sucker”/Simon and Garfunkel tune that kicks in when you first enter Mexico blew me away.
As for the controls, I don’t get the “clunkiness” at all. Everything seems like a natural extension from the GTA controls. The shooting is easy and the riding and walking around seems simple enough (some people have been just now realizing their controls are set to difficult – maybe check that?). Now, I remember borrowing an Xbox 360 a couple of years ago and playing GTA: San Andreas and being really pissed at the controls. For some reason the XB controls just didn’t gel as well as the PS2 did. Perhaps RDR* is the same way?
I can’t get enough of this game. There is just so much to do and look at that I don’t see myself ever finishing the thing, yet at the same time I’ll never get bored. The online play is awesome for just roaming around and leveling up or playing in teams. I want to start a second game and play as a bad ass and just kill anyone and everything that gets in my way.
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010Oh yeah, and the voice acting was way more impressive than I had expected. I’ll be surprised if this isn’t console game of the year.
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010Just finished the whole episode. Some top ten talk. Sean, totally on board with the Res Evil pick. I think I would go with one over four, but both are good. There’s something about that first experience w/Res 4 I’ll never forget. It scared the crap out of us. The controls were wonky and hard to get used to, but the first time playing a scary game made up for it.
Still, my favorite scary game of all time? Silent Hill 2. That game scared the bejeesus out of us when we like 25. The crawling ghost babies in the hospital? Snap!
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010Sorry I’m taking over the board here, but this is seriously my new favorite podcast.
Do you guys do any retro gaming (I mean REAL retro gaming)? After moving recently I hooked up the ol’ Colecovision and Atari 2600. Can’t sit and play for hours anymore, but it’s fun to go back to some of those old games. And some really do still hold up (Joust, Pitfall 2, Miner 2049er, Super Breakout, Adventure, etc.)
Recently sold the Sega Dreamcast but always thought that was the little system that never was. It parred nicely with PS2 and was online way before any other console was. Some great games on there like Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Jedi Power Battles, Soul Reaver, etc).
What kind of retro gaming do you guys do?
Can’t wait for the Metroid retrospective. I might play along with you guys.
I’ll shut up now.
Posted by Andrew James on August 3rd, 2010I didn’t know you were this much into video games Andrew, that’s awesome.
Posted by Henrik on August 3rd, 2010I was wondering if it would be worth my time listening to this podcast. Now I learn that Red Dead Redemption gets short shrift I know that it isn’t. thnx.
Posted by DavidM on August 4th, 2010I still think you should use my name suggestion from the live Inception podcast, The Game Men. You could use the double rainbow song a your theme. Or the old standby, It’s Raining Men.
Posted by Brendan on August 4th, 2010Great Podcast. Really hope this isnt the only episode you record. Can we make suggestions for you guys to review games that may have been passed over or not been given as much credit as they deserve? If so, than I suggest you guys review Dead Space and Red Faction: Guerrilla.
Anyway here is my top ten list of all time:
1. Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
Posted by Matt on August 4th, 20102. Resident Evil 4 (GC)
3. Gears of War 2
4. BioShock (X360)
5. Burnout 3: Takedown (Xbox)
6. Ninja Gaiden (Xbox)
7. Fallout 3 (X360)
8. Super Mario World
9. Contra (NES)
10. Mass Effect (X360)
Man, guys, I hope you get some great video game people with a bunch of knowledge for future episodes. You guys missed a lot of key points and made some huge errors.
It was fun hearing some of the nostalgia parts from the older systems despite your major over-sites.
I’d love for you to ask for some fans of the show to be on. Video games are so much deeper and worth so much more intelligent conversation than what you gave them.
This show has so much potential.
Posted by Bloviator on August 7th, 2010Hey Bloviator, we’re hoping to get to some more issue-based discussions on future episodes, but if you’d like to enlighten us on some of the “key points” we overlooked and “huge errors” we made, maybe we can improve.
Posted by Sean on August 8th, 2010Henrik,
Regarding Metroid Prime. I totally understand your frustration with the aiming/shooting method that they used, but the GameCube controller wasn’t ideal for first person shooting. You need to play Metroid Prime 3 on Wii. It completely resolves that issue. That’s the best FPS in my opinion.
Posted by bard on August 9th, 2010Guys,
Great Podcast, I hope they keep coming. I liked the discussion about old NES games, takes me back to the 90′s.
Maniac Mansion number 1. Nice choice. I think I played that game 100 times, but my fav bit was getting caught with one character (I always used Bernard because he was a nerd dick puncher) on purpose so you could raid that guys room with another character while he was walking back from the dungeon after locking Bernard away.
Would be nice if you talked about PC games more, just one suggestion.
Take it easy
Posted by Madsen on August 15th, 2010Madsen
Australia
Awesome stuff guys.
I love Mario games, but for some reason have never played either of the Galaxy games, despite having a dust collecting Wii at home.
Is it worth playing both, or just skip to the new and improved Galaxy 2?
Posted by Chris on September 20th, 2010Did any of you guys go back and play through Heavy Rain a second time? I played for about 3 hours and had enough. First off the controls are fucking terrible.
Second, like Sean, I never felt like I was doing anything significant. I sort of had this feeling that no matter what I did, the story would continue on in the same fashion, but maybe with just a little different dialogue but I’d still get the same clues and the same outcome. I never got the sense that this was a true “choose your own adventure” type of story.”
it looked kind of cool, but basically I wasn’t having much fun with it. Should I just play more and it gets better?
