J. J. Abrams to Adapt Steampunk Graphic Novel Boilerplate

J. J. Abrams continues to keep busy as his Bad Robot production company has picked up another property for the big screen. This time out, they’ll be adapting Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel, a graphic novel-picture book hybrid by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett. The film will tell “the story of the world’s first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I.”
The story sounds like a cool concept for sure and one that piques my interest. One thing worth mentioning about the style of the book is that it “tells Boilerplate’s story by inserting the character into pictures drawn in the style of the age.” I’m not sure how the film will work visually, but I think if they kept the same approach as the book there would be plenty of fun in switching from one style to the next. There’s no word yet on who will direct or where the project falls in terms of Bad Robot’s list of upcoming films, so it’s safe to assume we won’t be seeing this any time soon. But with that said, what are your thoughts on Boilerplate among the projects at Bad Robot?

Abrams needs to get on that Samurai Jack movie before this. I enjoy me some good steampunk and this might be fun but I want a feature length animated conclusion to the best action cartoon of all time first.
Posted by Ian on July 30th, 2010I love the concept of Abrams doing a steampunk project, but I don’t find this as an overly engrossing subject. I’d like to see him take on a full steampunk world ala Jules Verne, but I would definitely take this. I’m still waiting to see if Bioshock will actually be made, as Verbinski left the director helm and the budget apparently kept inflating. Hopefully one of these works out, I need to get my motion picture steampunk fix.
