Maury Chaykin 1949-2010

Sad news, folks: Canadian actor Maury Chaykin died yesterday, on his 61st birthday. Although you might not recognize him by name, you will most definitely remember the characters he played. His filmography is both impressive (over 150 film and television roles) and diverse. Chaykin was known as a character actor, able to slip into almost any role. Some of his most memorable ones include the raging commander in Dances With Wolves, the hillbilly in My Cousin Vinny and more recently, as Harvey Weinstein on HBO’s Entourage.
In an interview this morning on CBC Radio, Atom Egoyan talked about his friendship with Mr. Chaykin. When Egoyan was a budding filmmaker, he approached Mr. Chaykin to be in one of his films and was elated when, after having coffee together, he agreed. Since that film, Egoyan had found a role in most of his other work for Mr. Chaykin. News of Mr. Chaykin’s death came just hours after the Gala schedule for the Toronto International Film Festival was announced. Maury Chaykin is in two of the movies that will be playing at TIFF this year: Barney’s Version and Casino Jack. R.I.P.

I’m surprised that Sean and Film Junk readers know him.
