Monsters Trailer

Gareth Edwards’ Monsters has built up steam from the festival circuit earlier this year, being picked up by Magnet Releasing after debuting at South by Southwest. The first-time director’s mirco-budget film has many comparing it aesthetically to District 9, mostly due to its hand-held camerawork. Monsters is a sci-fi / horror film in which a probe, sent to discover the presence of alien life, crash-lands back on Earth. As new creatures begin to grow and cause great destruction, half of Mexico becomes quarantined as an Infected Zone. The story focuses on “a jaded US journalist [who] begrudgingly agrees to find his bosses daughter, a shaken American tourist, and escort her through the infected zone to the safety of the US border.”
After viewing the trailer, I can see where the District 9 comparisons are coming from, although from what I’ve read the film is much more character-based than what the trailer implies. One of the more striking aspects featured here is the sound design, which seemed eerily effective to me. I’m willing to give this one a chance when it’s released on October 29th. At least there will be some alternative to Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2. Check out the trailer for yourself after the break.

Aliens from space vs. the Jurassic Park soundboard. Other than that it looks quite intriguing.

Posted by Matt on July 28th, 2010They better show lots of the so called “monsters”. None of this glimpse shit.
Posted by TheAllKnowingGod on July 28th, 2010For those thinking this is a “Monster” movie you should lower your expectations right now. It is not. It’s more of a character drama than anything else.
Posted by swarez on July 28th, 2010But really good from what I’ve heard.
Looks beautifully shot and you’re right Sean the SFX are quite eerie and strikingly cool. Anyone know what the budget of this thing was? What classifies as a micro-budget…ten million?
Posted by 1138 on July 28th, 2010P.S. sorry the question should have been directed at Aaron not Seans…habits habits

Posted by swarez on July 28th, 2010I think way below a million dollars.
Yeah, I’ve heard as low as $15,000, but I don’t know if that’s at all accurate.
Posted by Aaron on July 28th, 2010i love that they did’nt show any monsters. I hope the whole movie is like that….but it wont be.
Posted by Cy-Ed on July 28th, 2010looks great, I really liked Scoot McNairy in “”in Search of a Midnight kiss”, been looking forward to him in another leading role

disagree…
Jaws…that’s all i’m going to say.
Posted by Mike on July 29th, 2010Hmm those generic monster noises aren’t doing much for me. I would be far more interested in this film if it had Mexicans it who were trying to reach the U.S. border, but maybe thats just me.
