Daniel Craig Confirmed for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Remake

I think it’s pretty clear that with the popularity of Stieg Larsson’s books and the critical acclaim that has been heaped on the original Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo film that an English language remake has the potential to be a pretty huge blockbuster. Sony has been rushing it along, trying to get this thing into production with an eye on a holiday 2011 release date. However, before David Fincher can get behind the camera, there’s still a little matter of casting to take care of. This week the first cast member has been confirmed, and it looks like the rumours of Daniel Craig’s involvement have turned out to be accurate.

According to THR’s Risky Business blog, Craig has signed on play Mikael Blomkvist, the male lead in the film. There had been concerns over a possible scheduling conflict with Cowboys & Aliens and Bond 23, but as we all know, the Bond series is now on hold indefinitely. Craig certainly seems like a decent choice for the role, although he is perhaps a little more brawny than Michael Nyqvist, who starred in the original.

The real question at this point is who will play Lisbeth Salander (aka the girl with the dragon tattoo) in the remake. Although some established actresses have reportedly been under consideration (Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, and Mia Wasikowska), the latest rumour is that the shortlist consists of five relative unknowns: Lea Seydoux (Robin Hood ), Emily Browning (The Uninvited, Sucker Punch), Sophie Lowe (Road Kill), Rooney Mara (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty). What do you think, does it sound like the remake is on the right track?

  1. I don’t know if the movie is on the right track but I love Fincher and Craig. I am interested in will rent the foreign version now that it is out. Really curious.

@ Sean where did you get that pic of Craig? What movie is it from? Don’t recognize the scene.

  2. I believe it’s from The Golden Compass.

  3. I haven’t read the english translation of the books but everything about this is so swedish to me.. did any of the Americans even know that Paolo Roberto is a real Swedish boxer playing himself in the movie?

  4. I really don’t think there is anything particularly swedish about the books. You could pretty much set them in whatever country you like. The only thing that might be a problem is that the swedish version of the CIA is pretty restrained in the books and that comes across as a little unbelievable to those of us who have grown up watching hollywood movies and american non fiction where such shady organizations would just kill the people trying to expose them instead making these elaborate scheming psychological plans.

  5. “…although he is perhaps a little more brawny than Michael Nyqvist, who starred in the original”.

I agree Sean. I haven’t read the books (yet) but loved the movie. I was thinking someone like Viggo or Liev Shrieber would be a good choice, but I’m sure Craig will deliver the goods, especially with Fincher directing.

  6. When you fall in love with the original (Swedish) version you’ll roll your eyes at any mention of a Hollywood remake, but I must admit with Fincher and Craig my hope are certainly higher than they were.

Great movie though for those who haven’t seen it.

  7. That’s funny because the original fuckin’ sucked. I’m all for seeing a remake.

  8. I’ve read the trilogy and I do feel it’s a very uniquely Swedish story. Maybe it’s just being used to the social conservatism, but the Swedes just seem so liberated in terms of sexuality, perversion, speech etc.

Because it’s not American, obviously the ’stakes’ aren’t as high. Even the “Swedish CIA” story for the second 2 books isn’t some Bourne/Enemy of the State story as it is very down to Earth.

My 2c: Craig definitely looks the part. A lot closer to Blomkvist I imagined than the original actor. Though the dealbreaker was always going to be Salander. Personally I always imagined her looking somewhat Lily Allen-esque.

  9. Apparently they’re saying now that the remake will still be set in Sweden… which is interesting.
