X-Men: First Class Casting: Jennifer Lawrence is Mystique, Kevin Bacon is a Villain?

We’ve got a few more X-Men: First Class casting tidbits to tell you about today, starting with the casting of Mystique, the sexy shapeshifter played by Rebecca Romijn in the previous X-Men films. According to Heat Vision, the role in the new film will go to 19-year-old Jennifer Lawrence. Who is Jennifer Lawrence? Read on to find out.
Lawrence is a rising star who has been getting a lot of attention for her performance in Winter’s Bone (see Colin’s review here). She was also great in Guillermo Arriaga’s The Burning Plain, and she stars in The Beaver, the Mel Gibson comedy that may not end up seeing the light of day due to his recent P.R. nightmare. It’s unclear if she will be forced to spend the entire film nude and painted blue, but considering that they chose to hire someone with acting chops, you’d think they might ask a little more of her in the film.
In other news, there are reports that the villain of the film will be played by none other than Kevin Bacon. The identity of said villain is currently being kept under wraps, but I think we all know that he will obviously be appearing as The Baconator. Any thoughts on either of these casting choices?

Great casting choice. Jennifer was great in Winter’s Bone. She has the same acting ability as Evan Rachel Wood.

Posted by rus in chicago on July 16th, 2010There is no such thing as evil Bacon.
Posted by swarez on July 16th, 2010Bacon is always good.
This is still going to suck.
Also, I don’t see how her being painted blue and nude negates the possibility of the role having some depth to it. The lack of clothing DOES make sense for the character’s power.
Posted by Ben on July 16th, 2010At first I didn’t think Jennifer had the cleavage to be believable as a young Rebecca R-S, but after seeing the “all wet” video I have changed my mind.
As for the movie, this and Thor are my best hopes for quality comic-adaption movies in production. Though I hope to be surprised by The Avengers (Whedon might pull it off) and Captain America (even though I might be the last man on earth, or Filmjunk, to think Joe Johnston makes a good movie).
Posted by HFD on July 16th, 2010Maybe Kevin Bacon will be a sinister teacher at Professor Xavier’s school who molests the kids and when they turn into adult mutants kill him and later have to justify their actions.
