Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Werewolf Movie?

As the Twilight series continuing to drive public interest in vampires, I am a bit surprised that the Wolf Pack hasn’t yet inspired a whole new wave of werewolf movies as well. Although perhaps not as popular as their bloodsucking rivals, there have definitely been some decent werewolf flicks over the years (maybe more than you realize). But which one is the alpha dog… the so-called leader of the pack? Cast your vote in this week’s poll, and list off some of your other favourite lycanthropes in the comments below.

VAN HELSING?!!!!??!?!?!?
Posted by Johnny Cage on July 9th, 2010No Teen Wolf 2? Or Wolf with Jack Nicholson?
Posted by Brendan on July 9th, 2010Oops, I meant Teen Wolf “TOO!” Oh, the hilarity.
Posted by Brendan on July 9th, 2010Not gonna vote before Van Helsing gets on the list…
Posted by Moses in a Box of Candy on July 9th, 2010If you didn’t vote American Werewolf in London you’re wrong.
Posted by Fatbologna on July 9th, 2010How was Brotherhood of the Wolf a werewolf movie? There wasn’t a single wolf in it, the title was taken from the name of a secret society in the movie.
Posted by Steve on July 9th, 2010Ginger Snaps, no contest.
Posted by Slushie Man on July 9th, 2010And yeah, Brotherhood of the Wolf was NOT a werewolf movie so I don’t understand why it’s up there…
Or why it’s got so many votes…
Posted by Slushie Man on July 9th, 2010Wolf with Jack Nicholson?!?!?!? Who the fuck made this list? and yes get rid of Brotherhood of the Wolf.
I would have also put The Howling and probably Underworld even they are not my favorites they had some impact.
Posted by Space Bandito on July 9th, 2010Ooops I see The Howling. Off to look up Ginger Snaps.
Posted by Space Bandito on July 9th, 2010While I love American Werewolf, I feel it’s a tad over-rated and hasn’t aged well. Ginger Snaps, on the other hand, is the perfect werewolf movie.
Posted by ottobud on July 9th, 2010Space Bandito, Slushie Man,
You guys are pretty serious about this, huh? Some real moral outrage about that list. You understand that they probably won’t burn all the prints of the films that don’t win, right?
Posted by Fatbologna on July 9th, 2010Where did we express outrage? We were just stating it’s not a werewolf movie.
But way to try to cause drama. You obviously have nothing better to do with your time.
Posted by Slushie Man on July 10th, 2010I am not outraged. It is a fun list after all. It is simply disappointing to see a list devoted to movies be so uninformed. In the end this place entertains us for pennies and I appreciate 99% of what they do. But leaving off Wolf is the equivalent to asking what is your favorite Western and leaving off Unforgiven.
Both are classics.
What do these lists really mean in the end? They make us laugh, they make us cry. They might make a few of us buy or rent a movie we haven’t seen before.
Posted by Space Bandito on July 10th, 2010I guess I took your capitalized ‘NOT’ as outrage. I was wrong. I have many great and wonderful things to do with my time, one of which appears to be starting an argument in regards to what makes a werewolf movie a werewolf movie and the semantics therein. It also appears I failed that mission and have made a certain Slushed Male feel attacked. I apologize. I was VERY drunk when I wrote that post(that excuse worked for Mel Gibson a few times, right?).
Posted by Fatbologna on July 10th, 2010BTW,
Ginger snaps is NOT the best werewolf movie of all time. American Werewolf is. Hands down. I’m actually a fan of the entire Ginger Snaps series but I wouldn’t call them the best. Hell, Wolfen’s better than Ginger Snaps. As is The Howling.
Posted by Fatbologna on July 10th, 2010I didn’t forget Wolf, I just didn’t think it was better or more loved than any of the other movies on this list. Perhaps I was wrong, but I’m glad you brought it up.
I also think Brotherhood of the Wolf counts even though it’s a bit non-traditional.
Posted by Sean on July 10th, 2010Out of all the great werewolf movies made you decided to choose a picture from fucking Twilight?????
Posted by swarez on July 10th, 2010Neil Jordan’s “The Company of Wolves” is missing!!!!
My vote goes to “An American Werewolf in London” – one of my all time favorite movies. I long lost count on how many times I’ve seen this masterpiece.
Posted by Werner on July 10th, 2010Dog Soldiers by Neil Marshall is the best werewolf movie
Posted by paul on July 10th, 2010“Dog Soldiers by Neil Marshall is the best werewolf movie”
and that says something mate.. (I vote for that one too)
It seems to me that there are just not enough good warewollf movies out there, are they?..
Dog Soldiers is just an OK movie, with some nice moments here and there but overall is nothing great.
Posted by Kyriacos on July 10th, 2010Maybe with a better sound and video editing it could have improved a bit.. but as it is now it’s just not good enough. The plot is messed up, the acting is horrific, the special effects are extremely low budget (I don’t really mind the low budget fx, but when you try so hard to hide your lowbudgetness and fail miserably then you have failed twice. And furthermore it’s excessively long without any particular reason (since there is no plot!).
Question for the Women of the world:
Why the fuck twilight werewolfs look more than big cute puppies rather than actual werewolfs?
I mean think about it.. bestiality?
Posted by Kyriacos on July 10th, 2010No Company of Wolves = no credibility.
