Charlie Sheen to Return for Major League Sequel?

Last year we reported that another Major League movie might be in the early stages of development over at Warner Brothers, and although we still have not heard anything official, we do have an update on the status of the project that sounds somewhat promising. The good folks at Moviehole recently had a chance to talk to David S. Ward, the writer and director of the first two films, who confirmed speculation that he is trying to get another sequel off the ground and that a script has already been written. He also revealed that the plan is to re-unite the original cast, and that Charlie Sheen has already expressed interest in doing it.

If you weren’t a big fan of Major League: Back in the Minors starring Scott Bakula, you needn’t worry because Ward does not consider that a part of Major League “canon”, as it were. The movie he is developing right now would, for all intents and purposes, be the real Major League 3. Here’s what he had to say about the plot:

“It’s 20 years later, and Wild Thing comes out of retirement to work with this 19-year-old player… We’ve actually got three new characters in the new film. And if the new film is popular, they could carry the franchise on.”

Hey, maybe they can work in an Eastbound & Down crossover while they’re at it? Either way, Ward hopes to shoot it sometime next year, which is when Charlie Sheen is on hiatus from Two-and-a-Half Men. In order to do that, though, he’ll still have to get a studio on board, along with Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen and Wesley Snipes (and, to be honest, I don’t think their schedules are very full). What do you think, will we actually see these guys back in action? And is there still an audience for another Major League?
