Daniel Day-Lewis to Play Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been pretty excited about Sherlock Holmes 2 ever since it was announced that Guy Ritchie would be setting aside all other projects in order to get this to the screen as quickly as possible. We know that Holmes’ arch-nemesis Moriarty will likely be a big part of the next film, and previously Brad Pitt was rumoured to be in line for the role. However, we haven’t had any confirmation of that fact over the past few months, and now this week we’ve got another very interesting casting possibility being discussed: Daniel Day-Lewis.

The report comes courtesy of Superhero Hype, who claim that “unconfirmed sources” told them that Guy Ritchie wants Daniel Day-Lewis for the role. Yeah, it’s all sounding a bit sketchy, considering that even if this rumour is true, it doesn’t mean that they’ve actually talked to DDL. He’s just on Guy Ritchie’s wish list right now.

That being said, I think we can all agree that he would be a fantastic choice. Daniel Day-Lewis has played a couple of the most memorable on-screen villains over the past decade with Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood and Bill “The Butcher” Cutting in Gangs of New York. The only problem is, the man is pretty picky about the projects he chooses to attach himself to. What are the odds he would agree to appear in a major blockbuster like this? Perhaps the relative failure of Nine might give him a little nudge in the right direction. What do you think, would you like to see Daniel Day-Lewis as Moriarty in a Sherlock Holmes sequel, or would this just be a waste of his talent?

  1. i’d rather see him in Batman 3…it’s fun to imagine.

  2. Daniel Day-Lewis would be a awesome Moriarty. I hope this becomes true.

  3. Did Sean really write this?

Sounds like a cool choice, but I don’t think Guy Ritchie is the only Guy(getit?) who wants DDL in his movie.

  4. I think that would be awesome though I would prefer someone else directing. I really like Jude Law as Watson and think he is a really really good actor I Love RDJ and think he can act circles around almost anybody, but I thought RDJ was miscast as Holmes…he acted well as usual but he didn’t seem right as Holmes. And Guy’s style of directing is pretty one note…the movie was unimaginative with nothing truly inventive to offer. I wanted to like it so badly, but in the end I couldn’t bring myself to appreciate Guy’s interpretation of the Holmes legend.

  5. I actually think Pitt would mesh better as Moriarty against RDJ as Holmes (and I think he’s a good enough actor to do a good job).

  6. It would blow my mind if this were to happen.

  7. As long as he ask’s Holmes if he would like a milkshake.

  8. As far back as 1991, the Sherlock Holmes actor, Jeremy Brett, had mentioned in an interview he was interested in passing on his role to Daniel Day-Lewis by 1995. I wonder if this was ever discussed at any length and whether Day-Lewis was ever aware of Brett’s wish.
