Possible New Mortal Kombat Movie Trailer Leaked

For years, people have been trying to get a third Mortal Kombat movie off the ground, and yet for obvious reasons, it never came to pass. The terrible Mortal Kombat: Annihilation basically ensured that another sequel would never see the light of day, but when Warner Brothers picked up the rights to the franchise last year, we started to hear plans about a possible reboot. Now, this week, it looks like we may have our first real proof of said reboot in the form of a short film / promo trailer that has mysteriously found its way online. Did I mention that it happens to star Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) as Jax and Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade?
Here’s the thing: no one seems to be too sure what this is or where it came from. It’s possible that it’s just some sort of viral promo for a new video game, but CHUD claims to have the inside scoop that it is, in fact, related to a new movie, and that fight choreographer Larnell Stovall (Undisputed III: Redemption) was involved. Either way, it’s pretty clear that this is not just a fan creation, and even though it’s pretty over the top with how dark and gritty it’s trying to be, the idea of making Mortal Kombat somehow more “realistic” is intriguing. Everyone is anticipating a big announcement at E3 next week, but until then, feel free to speculate about what this is or what you hope it will be in the comments below. Check out the trailer after the jump.
Update: According to RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, this short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen (Fame).

this looks awesome!
I had no idea scorpion was the actual good guy, I always thought subzero was the good one..
Man these looks fun..
Posted by kyriacos on June 8th, 2010Nice.. I love the action in the Undisputed movies, more specifically 2 & 3 with Scott Adkins.. Ironcially enough Michael Jay White stars in Undisputed 2 with Adkins.
Posted by pcch7 on June 8th, 2010Kyriacos – I don´t think the trailer made Scorpion out to be a good guy.. Subzero has always been the good guy out of those two
Posted by pcch7 on June 8th, 2010This obviously looks like a promo for a videogame.
Posted by Dane on June 8th, 2010The strain at which this trailer goes about laying it’s “PLOT” out is painfully protracted. It’s bloody fan-service.
The fighting looks solid though.
Posted by kurt on June 8th, 2010This looks amazing, if it is a promo for a video game, i hope it turns into a movie…my least favorite part of mortal kombat was the mysticism…not sure if that’s blasphemy to say, but this looks like something i could get down with.
Posted by Mike on June 8th, 2010God I hope this is a movie. There hasn’t been a solid American produced fighting film in years to my estimation. We can only hope.
Posted by Mike on June 8th, 2010Check out Undisputed 3 Mike. It’s pretty solid in the fight department.
Posted by swarez on June 8th, 2010This looks really great. I guess they wanted Fincher and this guy does a half assed impression but still… Robin Shou for Liu Kang.
Posted by Nick Robertson on June 8th, 2010There’s 2 brothers that go by the name Sub Zero in the games, one good, one evil. Scorpion’s always been kind of an avenging specter, not really good or evil.
Anyway, this is promising. I think I’d prefer this to end up being a promo for a new game as it’s still a bit lower end than what I’d like to see from a new movie.
Posted by Ben on June 9th, 2010Looks great. I hope it gets made into a film.
Posted by ProMovieBlogger on June 9th, 2010IT’S ABOUT FUCKING TIME!!! now let’s please, please, do it right, and not like the first ones. they should get the guy in ninja assasin to play the fire ball guy….kano? is that his name, what ever, get him though
Posted by rick on June 9th, 2010no wait, liu kang. Thats who it is. yeah, get the guy from ninja assasin
Posted by rick on June 9th, 2010I think it’s a pitch to WB to make the movie. It’s almost got 1 million views already, so I think they will bite.
Posted by bryan on June 9th, 2010Why do they get code names?
Posted by Theman on June 9th, 2010Looks pretty cool.
Posted by Ike on June 9th, 2010Ah…everything looked f-ing awesome until the reveal of his eyes. What a horrible effect! They just look like he has is eyes closed.
Otherwise super dope.
Posted by Darksiders on June 9th, 2010I had no idea the Elephant Man was a martial artist.
Posted by Steve on June 9th, 2010made for the game or not, this looks really dope! i hope its from the movie though.
Posted by Napalm on June 13th, 2010Looks to be more of a treatment than a trailer, probably using it to get some studio’s attention I believe it worked. Looks dark like 7 with martial arts.
Posted by James on June 13th, 2010YES!
Posted by Dave L on June 13th, 2010Huge MK fan here. My buddy and me STILL play MK 3 Ultimate all the time.
If you read the storys in the games, Scorpion does kill Subzero Between 2&3 and the “new” subzero is in 3. Pretty cool, as it would seem whomever wrote this actually knows the back story of the games well.
Getting rid of all the crazy mystic stuff, is FINE by me, and making characters with something like explainable disorders or behaviors sounds very very cool.
So far the casting seems perfect, and Reptile’s fatality was ALWAYS eating the heads in one way or other for every game. Baraka Always had a Head chop fatality in every game he was in. If thats all we have to deal with with Johnny Cage, then fine, Least fav Character.
Major kudos to who ever put this together, coming from a HUGE MK fan.
Have to say if this is the movie then they finally got it right(unlike the horrible G.I.JOE Movie). Must be guys our age who grew up with this that are part of making it. I hope this is a movie, I will definitly go see it. Its about time movie execs step aside and let the guys who know what we want make movies and not go a different route tring to get a different audience to watch.
Posted by ONEBADMF on June 13th, 2010GOOD JOB whoever made this!!
My thoughts, it was well produced and it looked nice but I didn’t like it. The guys who played scorpion would have been better of playing Shang Tsung instead and why is the name “Sub Zero” so damn important?
Everyone else was going by their birth name but Scorpion and Sub Zero choose to use code names for no good reason?
Mortal Kombat was and is about Martial Arts and the survival of the human race but in this world, they are all human and there is no real threat against humanity. Instead what we get is a hard edged cop drama. If I wanted to watch a cop movie, there are several dozen good ones already out there. If I wanted to see a Mortal Kombat movie I’d expect it to be based on the game. What they did was ignoring the source material. It’s an insult to both John Tobias and Ed Boon who created the franchise. It isn’t a slap in the face, it’s a punch to the balls.
As a creator and writer myself, I’d be pissed of someone took my concept and made changes for their own personal needs and wants. Stick with what the series was about. As bad as the last Mortal Kombat film was, at least they stayed true to the game that it was based on.
All I know is that I could write a better movie than what these people created. Sure it looks nice, but it isn’t Mortal Kombat, it’s an hyped up version of “Law & Order” mixed with “Die Hard.” I doubt anyone will agree with me but I am a die hard fan of the MK franchise (no pun intended) and I find this so called trailer to be insulting to said franchise.

Perhaps Sub-Zero and Scorpions real names are not known? SOmething you should remember is that Scorpion as quoted in the trailer as being an uber assassin.

People reinvision plot and ideas all the time… Spiderman, X-Men both half way descent reinvisionings of someone elses ideas.

As for writing a better movie, Im sure you could possibly do so, and im sure there are plenty of people who may agree with you, but to blast a movie you that hasnt even been put out yet, and rant about how bad it is without even seeing it is a venture in ignorance. Personally I like the idea of making the characters more realistic, and wether or not the movie is any good, I will hold my judgements until I actually see it when and if they make it.
Posted by S.Owens on June 17th, 2010why the hell would it be a promo for the game??? thise are no cheap actors andi think its the real deal!!!!!!!!
Posted by jz71ao on July 18th, 2010I like the mystic Stuff, it added the surprise magical element and explained the power houses like Raiden Shang tsung Goro and such, the ninja suits are definitely REQUIRED…. how the hell can you ban a ninja assassin from the shyri ryu and be walking around like your average shmuck that suit means honor… all in all its going to be cool besides the fact that they raped barakka Also explained by the mystical element he has his own race in the outworld… i wouldn’t mind some thigns being changed back to the natural order but hell at-least its something to hold on to from years ago… how i miss the old days
Posted by Scorpion on July 26th, 2010Come on pepole Liu Kang needs to be played by TONY JAA he was in THE PROTECTOR and ONG BAK the thai warrior only he can pull it off.
