Universal Soldier IV Coming in 3-D

universalsoldier4

If the release of Universal Soldier: Regeneration earlier this year wasn’t unlikely enough, can you believe that there is already another Universal Soldier sequel in development? Regeneration must have done quite well on DVD and Blu-ray, because Foresight Unlimited has announced this week that Universal Soldier IV is happening, and that both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren will return. Although technically this is now the sixth Universal Soldier movie, it is the fourth in the series according to “official” canon. John Hyams will also return to direct.

The somewhat unexpected part of this story is that they are claiming that the new movie will be shot in 3-D. Considering that Universal Soldier: Regeneration was a direct-to-DVD release, does this mean that they are aiming for a theatrical release this time around? It seems pretty unlikely, especially since so many people will be out of the loop story-wise. On the other hand, I’m not sure it really makes sense to shoot a strictly DTV movie in 3-D either. Sure, 3-D TVs are available on the market, but they are still a long way from any sort of widespread acceptance. Perhaps they’ll include an option to watch it with old school red/blue glasses as well. Either way, did anyone out there see Universal Soldier: Regeneration, and was it good enough to warrant a sequel?

  1. DVD sequels…I shit um.

  2. It is most likely just a salespitch from Foresight Unlimited to gather funds for the project, before actually having signed either JCVD, Lundgren or Hyams. It’s a quite common thing to do.

  3. Sean: Rent Universal Soldier Regeneration as soon as you can. Trust me on this, it’s probably the best DTV movie ever made, and one of the best b-movie action movies of the last 5 years. Feels like an old-school carpenter movie.

  4. I agree with Sean,i have seen loads of direct to DVD action films, and this one defied all logic when it turned out to be a really, good and solid action movie. With out a doubt, the greatest direct to DVD film thus far…

  5. Good movie. I’d watch another one of these for sure…maybe not in the cinema though. It’s probably a tad early to think people will buy a shit load 3D TVs, but who knows, this may begin the Direct to 3D DVD revolution….Viva JCVD.
