Disney Offers Shortened Sneak Preview of Toy Story 3 Across College Campuses in the U.S.

If you just can’t wait to see Toy Story 3 this June, you’re going to want to read this, because Disney and Pixar have decided to offer some lucky folks the chance to see a sneak preview of the film a couple of months early. They’re specifically targeting college campuses, which may not seem like the ideal demographic for a Pixar film, but let’s face it: everyone loves Pixar. However, there’s a bit of a catch to these sneak previews. Not only are they limited to viewers with a valid college ID, but the version of the film that will be shown is being dubbed the “Cliffhanger Edition”. What does this mean? Well, it means they’re only showing the first 65 minutes of the movie… what a rip off!
Now don’t get me wrong, these screenings are all completely free, and available on a first-come first-serve basis. However, to screen only the first two-thirds of a film seems pretty ridiculous to me. It sounds like Disney is trying to learn from the marketing tactics of studios like Fox Searchlight (who also offer free advance screenings), but that they don’t have the balls to put the full movie out there ahead of time. How frustrating would it be to watch just 65 minutes of a movie? I think it’s pretty lame. Anyway, if you want to look for a screening near you, head over to the Disney / Pixar Facebook page, and search for your college campus. Toy Story 3 hits theatres everywhere on June 18th.

Yeah…. as tempting as that sounds I think I’ll wait to get tickets for the regular, full-length free screenings.
I guess it’s a good marketing idea though… albeit a sleazy, cheap one. But if that’s how you get interest out about your movie… well… I don’t know. College kids will see anything. Look at me. I saw Hump Day because it was free.

Posted by Falsk on March 30th, 2010I don’t feel that it’s lame at all. How so? Yes it sucks to only see 2/3 of a movie, but I really enjoyed the 2/3 that I saw. Our school was one of the lucky few to get told about it, but I didn’t even know about it until a classmate told me. Its like it was kinda hush-hush. Our theater wasn’t even packed. Nearly full, but there are a LOT of empty seats. Kinda shocking.
