Captain America Casting Comes Full Circle: Channing Tatum Now Being Considered

Stop-Loss

It’s anybody’s guess what is going on with the casting for Captain America right now. They may have found their villain in Hugo Weaving, but the search for the lead role seems to be in complete and utter chaos. Marvel is no closer to choosing Steve Rogers than they were last month, and as the summer start date draws closer, the list of candidates is growing rather than shrinking. There have been conflicting reports over whether or not John Krasinski is still in the running, but the short list as of last week consisted of the following actors: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), and (apparently) Chris Evans (Fantastic Four).

Now this week two more big names have suddenly entered into the running: Ryan Phillippe and Tanning Chatum… I mean Channing Tatum. I was wondering how long it would take before Tatum came under consideration. He was one of the first names to be rumoured for the role last year, and when it comes to all-American soldiers, there is no one else who better fits the bill right now. Too bad he has the personality of a telephone pole. Phillippe, on the other hand, is about ten years older than most of the actors testing for the part. Strangely, both starred together as U.S. soldiers in the 2008 film Stop-Loss. Can you see either of these guys wearing blue tights? Will Marvel ever find the right man to play Captain America?

  1. i’m rooting for garrett hedlund, but all of them will really have to step their acting game up. Captain America’s an intense character. who ever gets the role will eventually have to act out the depression/confusion he has to deal with after learning that everyone he knew before he was frozen is either 80+ or dead.
btw, cap wear tights on RARE occasion. he actually wears denim (notice the belt.)

  2. Excellent. Hopefully he can bring that same subtle ghetto accent to Captain America that he gave Duke in GI Joe!

  3. lmao!
well he’s a better choice than John Krasinski.
either way, i hear its gonna have at least 3 entries, so i’d like to see winter soldier in one of them, or the civil war arch.

  4. @grrrr Garrett Hedlund would be f-ing awesome as the Cap. Is he being considered???

Tatum is a MUCH better pic than Kransinski. That was the worst casting choice EVER.

  5. Oh no! Channing Tatum is a black hole of charisma. One of the worst actors in recent years.

yeah he was actually a personal pick of the producers, but he wasn’t able to audition. but they’re apparently going to be patient with him, because the role only offers 300,000, so actors like him and evans would be a steal. but who ever plays cap, thor, and ant-man are probably gonna be nobodies =/ because marvels top priority is the Avengers movie. if cap and ant-man end up being expensive actors, they won’t be able to make the Avengers movie (they have to be able to afford robert downey jr, sam jackson, scarlett johanson, ed norton, and cgi for the iron man suit and the hulk.) Thor has already been cast, and it chris hemsworth.

    start looking at this guy

  8. They could not have picked a worse actor to be in the running than Channing Tatum! I’ve reluctantly seen him in 4 films and he’s been pretty much awful in each one. Seriously he’s one of the most uncharismatic “actors” working today!

All one needs to do is watch GI Joe to see what I mean. His acting always feels like he’s reading from a cue card! There’s no way in the world this guy can hold a candle to the likes of a Robert Downey Jr. Keep in mind that Capt. America will be opposite Iron man in the avengers films, therefore needs to hold his own, which I don’t see happening.

for cap america? he has lightish hair, but he looks too old and too soft to be a twenty-something super soldier.

  10. As stated before, Tatum is flat out not a good actor. He is in good shape, sure, but he just doesn’t have the acting chops to go toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr, which Captain America will be doing in the Avengers.

I liked the pick of Krasinski, he was an out of the box choice. I thought he was great in Away We Go and enjoyable at the very least in Leatherheads.

Truth be told, I don’t have a lot of hope for the next round of Marvel films. It seems they’re more worried about cutting corners on cost, which I am sure is the reason why we see names like Tatum,Phillippe, and Vogel; black holes of talent and on screen presence. And my worries extend to Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers as well. I hope for the best.

  11. Why aren’t they considering any actors of color for the title role, wonders TheWrap’s Jeff Sneider:

  12. If Tanning Chatum is cast, I will not watch this movie. Of the ones considered, Hedlund looks about right.. Wouldn´t cry if Evans was cast either and I like Phillipe but isn´t he a bit small in stature?

  13. I think Chris Evans is the way to go. This guy was awesome in Sunshine (best performance hands down) and made Fantastic 4 remotely enjoyable.

  14. For the longest time, I seriously thought Channing Tatum was some girl actor. Guess I was thinking of Carol Channing and Tatum O’Neal.

  15. Is a movie like this really actor dependent? I don’t think so. I guess I’m in the minority for liking Kransinski; however, I doubt that the movie with Chatum would be that different.

Phillippe small in stature? He’s 5 foot 9, but what do you need? I’m sure a low angle camera or some other camera trick could fix whatever issue that might be.

  16. Ryan McPartlin
That is who should be doing Captain America.

  17. I like Krasinski too. I don’t know if he would make the best Captain America, but he certainly would be better than Channing Tatum. What’s Tatum going to do dance the red skull to death? This ridiculous casting process is really souring me to this movie. I think they really need someone the fans can get behind like Robert Downey jr. as Iron Man. I say fire the casting director.

  18. David Boreanz. The End.

  19. @ Lisa
I’m not against them picking ’someone of color’ for most roll’s but captain america has to be caucasian. not because i’m racist or anything, but because there IS a ‘black cap’ in the marvel universe, but this is not the story of Isaiah Bradley, this is the story of Steve Rogers. If they made a movie about MLK, or Malcom X, and they were played by white people, it would be inaccurate. Same goes for Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers is a symbol of hope, and he has been for 70 years. He doesn’t have amazing powers at all. Its his CHARACTER that makes him a great hero, not his powers. And his character (personality, appearance, etc) is VERY important to his fans.

  20. I still think they should have someone in their 30s.. someone like Di Caprio but I guess that would be too expensive and not ideal for a bunch of sequels. Chris Pine would be perfect if he wasn´t already Kirk

  21. @patrik
why does it matter that he’s also kirk?
