Remembering the ’80s: Silver Bullet

Remembering the ’80s is a new column reminiscing about the good, the bad and the ugly from 1980’s cinema.
With the passing of Corey Haim (1971-2010), I thought that I would look back at one of the cooler movies he did in the ’80s. Now to me his best was The Lost Boys, but a close second would have to be Silver Bullet.
Silver Bullet was based on Stephen King’s novelette, Cycle of the Werewolf, for which he also wrote the screenplay. The flick is about a teenager in a wheelchair (Haim), battling against a werewolf (played by Everett McGill) who is killing off the people of a small town.
Silver Bullet is a fun movie to watch with its goofy scary music, and the not-so-scary werewolf effects. Although there are more critically-acclaimed adaptations of King’s work out there, I still love Silver Bullet and I would rather watch this over and over again instead of movies like Misery or The Green Mile.
One memorable scene in the movie takes place when Haim’s character is out shooting off some fireworks given to him by his crazy uncle (played perfectly by Busey), and he encounters the werewolf. He escapes by delivering a firecracker to the eye! Another great part of this flick is the finale, after the battle… the transformation from wolf back into human form is pretty wild.
Haim’s performance was pretty good, but the performance that stood out was Gary Busey as his uncle, who provides most of the humour in this flick. I had totally forgotten that Terry O’Quinn (Lost) played the sheriff of the small town. Anne of Green Gables herself (Megan Follows) also plays Haim’s older sister.
Corey Haim played a huge part, not just in this movie, but in other movies from the ’80s. When I saw that he had passed away, it was sad, because I watched him grow up through his movies and it felt like he was a friend. So take some time and give this movie a look if you haven’t seen it, and if you have, watch it again! What do you think Haim’s best movie was?
Rest in Peace Haimster!

Loved this movie as a kid and I think it actually scared me in a couple parts, which was rare, even back when I was a wee one.
Lost Boys was definitely Haim’s best movie though. I lost count of how many times I watched it back in the day.
Posted by KeithTalent on March 11th, 2010I haven’t seen this in forever, but I remember my friends and I wanted a wheelchair like that. The scene that sticks out in my head the most is when Haim finds out who the werewolf is.
I have to agree with Keith that Lost Boys is the best Haim movie.
Posted by heapshake on March 11th, 2010The Lost Boys is definitely the best Haim flick for sure, myself i have seen it over 50 times. the sequel that followed a couple of years should never have happened, it sucked from start to finish.
