Christopher Nolan is Definitely Involved in Superman (For Real This Time)

After some back and forth reports last month on Christopher Nolan being hired to oversee development of a new Superman movie, Nolan himself has finally confirmed his involvement in a recent interview for the L.A. Times. I guess it just goes to show that you can’t trust what the studios say… sometimes they just want to be the ones to control how the news is broken. He did say that the rumours about it being called The Man of Steel and also involving Lex Luthor and Brainiac might be a bit premature, but David Goyer is the one writing the script. It was actually all his idea.

According to Nolan, it all started when he was throwing around ideas for Batman 3 with David Goyer, and at some point Goyer just absent-mindedly suggested an idea for how he thought someone should tackle a new Superman movie. Nolan loved it, and took it to the studio to try and get them on board. Obviously they couldn’t say no to Nolan, and now the rest is history. Although he wouldn’t reveal any story details, he did say that they wanted to cast it with big names like the original 1978 Superman movie, where they had “all these fantastic actors in even small parts, which was an exotic idea for a superhero movie at the time”. He also seems adamant that it should remain a separate universe from Batman or any other superheroes… so a Justice League movie is probably not likely to happen anytime soon. Check out the full article for the rest of the scoop. It’s definitely worth a read, and even mentions a few tidbits about the next Batman movie as well.

  1. I would like to see Brandon Routh back as Superman. I thought he did a great job in Superman Returns.

  2. good news. i haven’t really enjoyed any of the Superman movies. maybe Nolan’s involvement might change that.

  3. my initial reaction towards this was very unsure…but the more they talk about this new batman movie being the end of his batman series the more i realize that i need a chris nolan super hero movie to look forward to, otherwise i could give two shits about them.

  4. I have always had sort of a take it or leave it attitude towards Superman, although I like Christopher Reeves portrayal. The basic problem with the character is he is just too powerful. Which is why a Justice League movie wouldn’t seem plausible. What does Superman need with the others? I like SNL’s take on it the best!

  5. I rewatched the original 1978 Superman a few weeks ago, it still stands up 30+ years later. In one of the documentaries on the dvd, Donner recalls casting all the big stars back then, but insisting the actor playing Superman being a relative unknown. Which brings me to the question: star or unknown? God forbid if Nicolas Cage petitions for the role (again). I myself vote for an unknown, maybe even Routh again.
